The day Lucas Radebe was shot

Lucas Radebe's 'rags to riches' story was very nearly ended almost as soon as it had begun. The Leeds United legend, nicknamed 'The Chief' grew up in the slums of Soweto, near Johannesburg, during one of the most violent times in South Africa under apartheid.
One of eleven children, he learnt his trade playing barefoot with a ball made of rolled-up socks. His breakthrough came during 1989, when talent scouts spotted him and signed him up to play for one of Africa's most glamorous clubs, Kaizer Chiefs.
But within two years the youngster's career would come under serious threat. Radebe had been out on the streets of Soweto with his brothers, one of his sisters and her baby. As they walked and shopped they heard gunfire, but didn't pay it much attention because, said Radebe: 'In Soweto you heard shots all the time'. Unfortunately, this time the gunfire was directed in the young footballer's direction and a bullet hit him in the small of the back and exited through his thigh.
As he was rushed to hospital, Radebe claims that the main concern running through his mind was not whether he would live or die, but whether he would be able to play football again. Fortunately, the wound was not too severe and Lucas's career was soon back on track. Neither the gunman nor the motive for attacking Radebe was ever discovered, although Lucas does harbour suspicions that his assailant was hired to prevent him from leaving the Kaizer Chiefs.
He says the shooting was both a 'defining moment' and a 'blessing in disguise.' His brush with death made him determined to make the most of his life and his talent, and in 1994 Howard Wilkinson, then manager of Leeds United, brought Radebe and his team mate Philemon Masinga to the Premiership. From that moment onwards for 'The Chief', the only way was up.

Reeves flattered by Vale transfer link

DAMIEN REEVES says he is in the dark over talk linking him with a possible move to Port Vale â€" but admits he is flattered by talk of a Potteries switch.
The one-time Leeds United apprentice is eager for a second crack at the big time, with ex-Celts boss and Vale chief Lee Sinnott reportedly in the hunt for the 23-year-old, who he brought to Throstle Nest from the comparative obscurity of Wakefield-Emley â€" now Wakefield FC â€" a few seasons ago.
Reeves has fully vindicated Sinnott's decision to take the plunge and sign him since, firing 23 goals in the Celts' Conference North promotion campaign last term and continuing to impress this season.
And with half an eye on his summer rebuilding plans, with Vale virtually nailed-on to be playing League Two football next term barring a Lazarus-style comeback, Sinnott could yet raid his old club and bring in Reeves â€" and link up with him for a second time.
But the striker, in double figures in the goalscoring charts in all competitions this term, is refusing to focus on anything other than the here and now.
Namely saving Farsley's Blue Square Conference skins with the club currently pitted in an intense survival fight.
On talk of a switch to the Valiants, Reeves - who found the net in last Saturday's unfortunate 3-1 reverse to leaders Aldershot - said: "I honestly couldn't say whether there is any truth in it or not.
"I don't know anything, but we'll see what happens.
"Of course, I'm flattered as anyone would be when a League club is linked with them.
"To play in the league is my ultimate aim.
"That's what I'm trying to do, I'm not going to kid myself. I think I'm good enough, but we'll have to see."
Every game promises to be a cup final for fourth-from-bottom Farsley between now and the end of the campaign as they fight to avoid the drop.
But despite Celts currently being adrift of safety, Reeves feels the side have a fighting chance of survival.
The 22-year-old said: "We still have to play a few teams around us and at the minute have got two games in hand.
"One is against Exeter, which is a really tough game, but the other is against Weymouth and they are struggling a bit.
"In the last few games, our performances have picked up a bit, but we've not been picking up wins.
"We picked up a draw against Stevenage when we should have won and we've lost a few games which we could have got better results from.
"Even last Saturday against Aldershot, when we were 2-1 down, we hit the bar and if we'd have scored a second, we could have gone on and won 3-2.
"We need to get a few wins and some points on the board and all the games are cup finals now."
Relatively pleased with his New Year form, Reeves added: "It's not too bad at the minute. I had a bit of a dip in form a few months ago, but it's coming back now.
"I've got nine in the league, they tried to take one away from me against Forest Green, but I've got 13 altogether and I'm fairly happy with that."

Griffiths - I was so humiliated

THE A-League's top scorer Joel Griffiths has revealed the reason he is back at the Newcastle Jets is because of the professional humiliation he copped from his former Leeds United boss Kevin Blackwell in 2006.
Griffiths' 14-goal return this campaign is the main reason the $12 outsiders have overcome an exodus of stars to qualify for Sunday's grand final against Central Coast Mariners.
Only the battlers from across the Tasman, Wellington Pheonix, were offering longer odds than Newcastle at the start of the 2007-08 season.
But the Griffiths-led Jets have overcome adversity and completed a barnstorming run to ensure the bitter rivals lock horns for the sixth time this season, in Sunday's decider at Sydney Football Stadium.
Now Griffiths has broken his silence and revealed the anguish he was forced to endure at Elland Road, contrary to the scenes of delight fellow Aussies Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka enjoyed before him.
"At Leeds, the manager Kevin Blackwell never spoke to me at all, I didn't know what to expect," Griffiths said.
"He signed me then criticised me non stop.
"It's really hard to go to a club and express yourself if you have a manager that thinks you can't do it."
His comments come in the wake of Englishman Blackwell's union with another Socceroo, former Sydney FC winger David Carney, after he was last week appointed manager of Championship club Sheffield United.
Like Carney, returning to the A-League from Europe has done wonders for Griffiths' career, and the attacker is quick to draw a contrast between Blackwell and the effusive backing he's had from Jets boss Gary van Egmond.
"Coming back to Newcastle, it seems like Dutchy (van Egmond) always believed I could do it and that gave me the confidence," he said.
"If you don't have a manager that's 100 per cent behind you, I can't play for that manager. It just won't work out, because you want to express yourself and try different things."
A volatile and inconsistent performer upon his return to Newcastle, Griffiths last week revealed he almost quit the Jets at the start of the season.
But the 28-year-old has transformed into a proven matchwinner, bailing the Jets out of strife on countless occasions this season, and now guiding them to the grand final.
An ice-cool Griffiths converted the penalty in last Sunday's pressure-cooker semi-final to restore Newcastle's lead in extra time.
His sensational goal from a quickly taken free kick away to Melbourne Victory in round 17 was another turning point, muzzling last season's premiers while propelling the Jets into finals contention.
"That free kick, I would never, ever think about taking a free kick like that in Switzerland," said Griffiths, who had a stint at Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax after two years with Newcastle United in the NSL.
"You're scared of the consequences, the coach probably wouldn't even let you take it. I never even took a penalty.
"If Dutchy says 'I want you to take this, I believe in you' then nine times out of 10 I'll hit the target.
"I've repaid the faith Dutchy and the club have shown in me.
"Dutchy's been great, he wasn't coach of the year last season for nothing.
"I probably wouldn't be in this situation if he wasn't the coach."

Wetherall poised to hang up boots

Bradford City captain David Wetherall has announced he will retire at the end of the season after making more than 300 appearances for the Bantams.
The 36-year-old still has two years left on his current deal and will stay on at the club as first team coach.
He told BBC Radio Leeds: "I'm a realist and not a fantasist and know you've got to call it a day sometime."
Chilean striker Willy Topp is suffering from a muscle-tightening condition which prevents him playing full games.
Wetherall signed for Bradford City from Leeds for £1.4m in 1999 and will be best remembered at Valley Parade for scoring the goal against Liverpool on the final day of the 1999-2000 campaign which ensured Premiership survival.

"The mind is telling me to be in one place and the legs won't get me there"
David Wetherall

He will retain his player registration next season if needed but said the end of the season was the right time to hang up his boots.
"I don't think it was a particularly difficult decision at all," said Wetherall.
"Now is the right time because I'm starting to get frustrated with myself really.
"The mind is telling me to be in one place and the legs won't get me there. Now is the right time to hang up the boots and move forward."
After nine seasons of playing, Wetherall will concentrate on coaching duties next season as first-team coach alongside manager Stuart McCall and assistant manager Wayne Jacobs.

David Wetherall
Has made more than 500 career league and cup appearances
Moved to Bradford from Leeds for £1.4 m
Scored the goal that ensured Bradford's Premiership survival in 1999

Wetherall said: "Stuart has said that he wanted someone else on board - it's not a situation where I'm there and they need to create a job for me.
"I think he's been pushing the chairman for an extra member of staff and everything just fits into place.
"He says he's really keen to get me on board and it's a fantastic opportunity for me to join the coaching staff and hopefully help the club progress from that position, " he added.
Wetherall already holds a Uefa 'B' coaching licence and will complete his 'A' licence this summer.
He had one spell in caretaker charge of the club after the sacking of Colin Todd last season but couldn't prevent relegation to League Two.

Matteo aiming for new career high

Dominic Matteo says helping Stoke to the Premier League this season would represent the biggest achievement of his career.
Matteo's CV boasts spells with Liverpool, Leeds and Blackburn but the 33-year-old insists promotion with the Potters would surpass all his previous achievements, including his Champions League semi-final appearance.
"To get into the Premier League with Stoke would certainly be the biggest achievement of my career," he told BBC Radio Stoke.
"I've never been part of a team that's been promoted before and it would be massive for a club like Stoke to earn a place in the Premiership."

Celts give Parsley new lease of life

When the opportunity to work at Throstle Nest became available, former Leeds United defender Neil Parsley was one of the first to put his name forward.
The vastly-experienced ex-Guiseley manager was appointed as number two to John Deacey and he said: "It's nice to be back in the game, working at this level, and it's nice to feel wanted again. I'm sure I have a lot to offer at this club in this role."
Parsley settled in Leeds after Howard Wilkinson plucked him from non-league soccer and he went on to play for West Brom and Huddersfield Town.
Now his focus is on keeping Farsley in the Blue Square Premier League in their first season at the top of the non-league tree.
"Coming back into the game is like finding a new lease of life and I'm enjoying it, even though it's hard at the moment," he said.
"There has been an improvement recently, in form if not results, and because of that confidence is picking up. Things are still within our own control so that is something we have to make the most of.

Robinson remains determined to quit Spurs

Paul Robinson is expected to leave Tottenham in the summer, despite his shock recall for this week's clash with Slavia Prague.
The Daily Mail says the goalkeeper will replace Radek Cerny for the UEFA Cup, second-leg clash, and will keep his place for the Carling Cup final if he impresses.
Robinson was initially dropped ahead of Tottenham's Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Arsenal, and he demanded a transfer from White Hart Lane during talks with sporting director Damien Comolli and his agent the following day.
Spurs accepted his demand, but told the England keeper that he would not be allowed to leave until the summer. Ramos has targeted a number of replacement keepers - three are in Spain and the other is playing in Italy - but Robinson could still leave White Hart Lane with a Carling Cup winner's medal.
He has been brooding on the bench since he was dropped after a series of errors which contributed to him losing his place in the England squad.

"The decision for me then is whether to stay on and maybe end up being in and out of the team as a squad player.
"Or do I go out to somewhere like Grimsby and play regular first-team football? There's also the option of signing at Doncaster and then going out on loan again.
"I haven't thought too much about it yet, but I've spoken with Alan Buckley and said I'd keep in touch. He has told me he would be interested."

HEALY STAYS PUT - FOR NOW

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has decided against sending out-of-favour striker David Healy out on loan despite having brought in three other front-men in the January transfer window.
Defender Ian Pearce has joined Southampton on loan but Healy, who scored five goals in 19 appearances for former manager Sanchez, is staying with Hodgson - for the time being at least.
Hodgson said: "There has been an inquiry for David but I've decided not to let him go at the moment. That could change with circumstances but he is a goalscorer and may still come in useful for us."
But Clint Dempsey, Hameur Bouazza and newcomers Eddie Johnson and Erik Nevland are also battling for a front-line place with fit-again McBride and Healy in a side that has been lining up 4-5-1 lately under Hodgson.

CARSON KEEN TO SETTLE DOWN

Harry falls for bogus job offer

DAVE BASSETT was left red-faced by a prank caller who tricked him into believing he was being offered a job.
Our five-minute video features out-of-work Bassett being told Scunthorpe United boss Nigel Adkins is set to be axed.
Bassett and the prankster then discuss the possibility of an assistant manager and scouting role under Adkins' replacement.
The ex-Leeds No2 can be heard whispering: "Has he got any inclination you might be sacking him?"
At one point the caller begins laughing but manages to regain his composure by saying: "Sorry Dave, I lost you there."
Bassett appears to be lost for words during the conversation and admits: "You've caught me a little bit on the hop."
But the hoaxer, believed to be a Scunthorpe fan, makes the offer sound genuine by adding: "Apologies for the short notice but we're in a dogfight at the minute and we're bottom of the league."
Before the call ends, Bassett insists he would definitely be interested in the job.
And the veteran coach, who was notorious for his practical jokes during his time as boss of Wimbledon's infamous Crazy Gang, was still smiling when SunSport revealed the truth to him.
Bassett, known within the game as Harry, joked: "When I didn't hear from him the next day I realised it was somebody trying to lead me up the garden path.
"It's part and parcel of life I suppose.
"He caught me on the hop because I was in a restaurant when he rang.
"The missus b******ed me for not having my phone turned off, so I'll have to make sure I do from now on!"

Unwanted Viduka is ready to leave Newcastle

Mark Viduka's long-term future at Newcastle is in doubt, with the player unhappy that he was overlooked for last weekend's demolition by Manchester United.
The Australia striker will be included in Kevin Keegan's squad for Saturday's crucial relegation fight with Blackburn Rovers at St James' Park but was left out against Sir Alex Ferguson's side because of a series of niggling injuries.
However, Sportsmail understands that Viduka was keen to be involved against the Premier League champions and trained on his own on the day before the match.

MILLER FREE TO LEAVE SUNDERLAND
Sunderland midfielder Liam Miller has been told he can leave the club.
The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international has been told he is free to find another club 18 months after his arrival on Wearside.
Miller is currently fighting his way back to fitness after a calf injury and Sunderland manager Roy Keane had suggested last week the former Manchester United midfielder could make a possible comeback for the reserves on Wednesday evening.
Transfer regulations mean Miller could only join a Football League club on an emergency loan deal before the end of the season.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane says midfielder Liam Miller can still have a future at the club - but only if he starts to turn up for training on time. (The Sun)
