Northampton Town: Sixfields

Sixfields.

Like Millwall, Northampton Town were prodded into moving grounds by the after-effects of Hillsborough.

Name: Sixfields
Capacity: 7,653
Record Attendance: 7,557 v Manchester City in September 1998
Distance from Elland Road: 129 miles
Year ground opened: 1994
United's last visit: Never visited

For the best part of a century, and ever since the club's formation in 1897, Northampton had inhabited the County Ground, a compact arena but one which failed to meet the standards expected and demanded of Football League clubs in the 1990s.
The financial implications of redeveloping the County Ground were unrealistic, and Sixfields was completed in October 1994 after a 10-month construction programme carried out by Ballast Nedam, the company behind Ajax's Amsterdam ArenA and other venues on the continent.
The first ever league game at the ground involved Barnet, and Northampton's inability to escape the lower leagues has limited the number of fashionable opponents who have lined up at Sixfields.
Manchester City's relegation to the second division took them to Sixfields in September 1998 for a game which produced a record attendance of 7,557. But it is 40 years since Northampton last completed a campaign in either of England's top two tiers.
But their modest history has not prevented fresh plans to redevelop Sixfields, and Town have ambitions of doubling their stadium's capacity to around 15,000.
The ground is owned by the local council, but the Cobblers have secured a 150-year lease, giving them greater scope to improve their home.
But, despite the presence ofdetailed plans, there has been limited movement from either Northampton's owners or the council towards rebuilding the stadium, prompting a demonstration from a group of frustrated supporters in April. The venue is one of the smallest in League One, and drew an average attendance of 5,573 last term.
Sixfields can hold a maximum of 1,250 away supporters, but the South Stand â€" the traditional home for travelling fans â€" has a capacity of just 850, and the clash with Leeds United on February 9 is likely to produce a full house. The stadium offers a reasonable amount of free car parking but Northampton train station lies two miles away, requiring a short taxi drive.
In years to come, visiting fans my find a hotel waiting for them at one end of Sixfields, but the club's proposals for redevelopment are likely to take five years to complete, and they still have not got an official start date.

Kamp 2/2:

MALPAS WANTS GREATER BELIEF

Swindon boss Maurice Malpas questioned his side's belief after they failed to hold onto their lead against Northampton.
Adebayo Akinfenwa - who almost joined the Robins in the summer before a failed medical - grabbed a late equaliser to cancel out Blair Sturrock's opener and earn the Cobblers a 1-1 draw.
Malpas said: "We got ourselves in front but I don't know if it was a lack of belief from the players.
"It was a disappointing afternoon all around, disappointing in terms of how we played, disappointing we only got a point, and disappointing we never picked up their player for the equaliser.
"Their biggest threat was from set pieces and we worked hard all week on defending those."
Northampton boss Stuart Gray felt his side deserved at least a point.
Gray said: "It would have been disappointing if we had got nothing out of the game but at least it keeps our run going.
"It was a soft goal to concede and we thought there might have been a foul in the box but credit to the lad Sturrock who gambled. It was a fantastic response from my players and all credit to them for that."
Gray also went on to praise Akinfenwa, who headed home his goal with just three minutes to go.
He added: "He still is some way short of full fitness and the last time he had that scoring feeling was probably around 11 months ago when he was with Swansea but hopefully that will give him his appetite back and I am sure there are plenty more goals in him."

Kamp 2/2:

Swindon - Northampton 1-1
AKINFENWA SALVAGES POINT FOR COBBLERS

Adebayo Akinfenwa struck three minutes from time to earn Northampton a deserved 1-1 draw as Swindon's play-off charge stumbled at the County Ground.
The Cobblers substitute - who almost joined the Robins in the summer - planted a firm header from six yards out from Danny Jackman's corner as Northampton finished strongly.
Swindon had taken the lead through the softest of goals when substitute Blair Sturrock nipped in front of his marker to turn in Miguel Comminges' long throw on 56 minutes.
Swindon, denied the services of £200,000 signing Simon Cox following a contract dispute with Reading, struggled to break down a well-organised Northampton team and the Cobblers keeper Mark Bunn's first action was to turn over Anthony McNamee's 53rd minute cross.
Mark Little's superb tackle on Lee Peacock six yards out prevented Swindon doubling their lead and Northampton, coming into the game on the back of three successive wins, finished strongly to claim a point.
The Cobblers might even have stolen all three points at the end when Jonathan Hayes found himself unmarked at the far post in injury time but blazed his shot wide from a tight angle.

Sporting thought for the day: Have Leeds blown it?

Leeds head to Sixfields next Saturday no longer in a play-off place.

After blowing all opposition out of the water (a lot of that down to strength of purpose fuelled by feelings of injustice) in the first few months of the season, reality has set in.

Nobody in League One is scared to play Leeds any more and teams such as Doncaster and Tranmere go to Elland Road confident of getting a result. And they do.

Leeds weren't the same once Gus Poyet left for Tottenham. Dennis Wise probably got out at a good time. His reputation as a manager was still intact and nobody had the chance to judge him on his transfer-window signings.

Now the bubble has burst, it could be difficult for Leeds to even claim a play-off spot. When you're on a roll, up or down, it can be hard to put the brake on.

New manager Gary McAllister is a good bloke, and good luck to him.

But Northampton Town have no reason to be fearful of Leeds next weekend. And, for that matter, few others in the division do either.

Defeat at Sixfields would be a big nail in the coffin of Leeds' play-off hopes, let alone automatic promotion.

It may well be that Leeds have blown it.

COME ON LEEDS !!

Leeds undervurderes av Northampton. :o ::) ;D

We'll be back.

75 SOLLI

Striker's warning to beware 'wounded' Leeds

Northampton Town striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has warned his team-mates that Leeds United will come to Sixfields on Saturday looking for a result to kick-start their faltering season.
Town and United have gone in opposite directions since the Yorkshire side won 3-0 at Elland Road last month.
Stuart Gray's side haven't lost since that meeting, but Leeds have only won once, a string of results that has seen them crash out of the play-off zone.
But Akinfenwa â€" who opened his account on his debut with the equaliser at Swindon on Saturday â€" has warned that form counts for nothing going into the game, and says Leeds will be desperate to get back on track.
"They are struggling at the minute but in this league anyone can beat anyone and they will know it only takes one game to spark your season off again," he said.
"We won't underestimate Leeds but then again we're on a nice little run at the moment and they can't afford to underestimate us.
"We'll go into it very confident that we can get something out of the game."
Akinfenwa's goal at Swindon was enough to secure a draw for Town, and
the powerhouse striker thinks it should also seal his place in the starting 11.
When asked if he would be knocking on manager Stuart Gray's door to see if he would be in the side this weekend, the number 10 said: "He should be knocking on my door.
"The gaffer knows me and if he feels I should play against Leeds then great but if not, I'll come off the bench and do what I did on Saturday. The team comes first but hopefully I did enough to warrant a start."

Extra police for big Leeds game

Extra policing is being laid on for one of Northampton Town's biggest matches of the year.
The Cobblers play Leeds United on Saturday and fans are being reminded the match is ticket only.
Those attending the game can expect to be searched for banned items, such as flags. Leeds fans tempted to sit in the home end will be ejected by Sixfields stewards.
Supt George Shipman, of Northamptonshire West Police, said: "This is one of the bigger matches for Northampton Town this season and Leeds United have a large following, a small number of whom have caused trouble before.
"We are working with Northampton Town and taking these measures to best ensure everyone at the football will have an enjoyable time."
He added he hoped fans would feel "reassured" by the presence of additional police an stewards.
Sixfields has a capacity of 7,500 people, with 1,250 Leeds fans expected to attend.
Supt Shipman said: "Leeds United have supporters from all over the country, a number of whom are from Northampton.
"Part of the issue is around safety in the ground. If you turn up in a Leeds kit and want to go into the Northampton end you won't be allowed in, or if you're jumping up and down shouting 'Leeds United'.
"There is potential for problems to occur and we don't want that, so stewards will remove you from the ground."
Visiting fans without tickets have been advised not to travel to Northampton.
Supt Shipman said: "The message we're giving is ticket-only. If you haven't got a ticket don't turn up. If you are coming please leave plenty of time to get here."
A spokesman for Northampton Town said: "We have been working closely with Northamptonshire Police for a period of time. We are confident and hopeful that Saturday's game will be an exciting and enjoyable occasion and safe for all concerned."

No Sixfields silence to remember Munich

Northampton Town will not be holding a minute's silence ahead of this weekend's match against Leeds United to remember those who died in the Munich air disaster.
It is 50 years since the plane crash that killed 23 people as Manchester United returned from a European Cup match in Belgrade. The plane crashed in Munich, where it had stopped to refuel.
A minute's silence will be held at Wemblery tomorrow night ahead of England's friendly match against Switzerland, and there will be events to mark the anniversary at the weekend.
But the Cobblers will not stage a silent tribute as it has not been instructed to do so by the Football League, which decides on these matters.
Rio Ferdinand is confident England's fans will respect the silence at Wembley.
Ferdinand played down fears that hostility to Manchester United among some fans could prevent the silence from being properly observed.
"I'm sure the fans will respect this," the defender said. "There were a lot of players who played for England in that tragedy, it is not just about Manchester United.
"It is about English football and it will be a poignant moment. We have got fantastic fans and I'm sure they will pay their respects in the right way."

Ferre

Håper på dette laget:

Casper

Richardson - Marques - Michalik - Parker

Sorsa - Howson - Hughes/Prutton - Carole

Elding - Beckford

Benk: Flo, Huntington, Prutton/Hughes, Sweeney, Johnson

                     Casper

Richardson - Marques - Michalik - Parker

       Howson - Hughes - Prutton

Carole/Sorsa                      Beckford

                      Elding

Høres bra ut, i alle fall i teorien!

Putt heller Donald Duck inn enn Flo
