Harry Gray's first words on whirlwind Leeds United week as youngster sets Premier League goal

"I'm enjoying it, it's been a good week to be honest," he told LUTV after the U21s' cup triumph. "I just want more, I want to keep scoring goals but hopefully [in the] first-team and next year prove myself."

Harry Gray
"Sixteen years old, eight minutes of Championship football and we are speaking about the Premier League. So I would strongly recommend to calm down just because his last name is Gray it doesn't mean he will cut the Premier League into pieces.

"He behaves himself with a bit of confidence, you could see with the celebrations. I had a little chat with him after the last celebrations.

"I told him, 'Harry, great how you celebrate but at one point I had more or less the feeling you won the title all alone for us, so relax a little bit!'

"But on the other hand, I've got a soft spot for strikers. It's quite good when a striker has some confidence because it can sometimes be a lonely world as a striker.

"So he definitely has this confidence that you need but it's also important to channel this a little bit and not to raise expectations too high. He is doing right now his first steps in senior level.

"He has many skills and we like his potential and professionalism. And how humble he behaves - with a few exceptions.

"But that's totally OK, it would be a pity if you young players were not self confident. But we have to make sure he is not overdoing this. There is a long way to go, he has many things where he needs to improve."

"Let's not praise him too much, it's never healthy for a young player. We will give him the time to develop proper but when I get the feeling he is ready and prepared to get minutes in first team level, he will get this.

"But this will happen step by step. Believe me next season we will have a group that's more competitive and more difficult to get game time due to some hopefully good additions. I won't place more weight on his shoulders because expectations of this club are always big with a surname Gray and for that I will stay quite calm with that."

Mesterskapsdebut på Harry i går.
Kom in som innbytter i første kamp av U17 EM.

The Young Lions began the competition with Tuesday's clash against Belgium in which Gray was handed a competitive debut at under-17s level as a second half substitute.

Gray had previously bagged two outings for England's under-17s in two international friendlies but the Whites youngster was brought on to replace Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha with 13 minutes left of the 1-1 draw.

Wait until you see the ego Young Harry carries along with him - in terms of temperament him & Archie couldn't be more different apparently.

Farke on Harry Gray
The plan is to take the focus away from him and not to speak about him too much. 16-year-old youngster, I won't speak too much about Harry because it's difficult when you play for Leeds United, you have this last name, the whole stadium singing your name and everyone expects you to celebrate once we get promoted as if you are the only one promoted. It's never healthy for development so my message is leave him alone a little bit, give him time to grow and develop. So this is the last time I will speak about him in a press conference, when he's on the pitch then we can speak about him again.

Come on Farke å gi gutten sjansen fra benken i første elleveren.

Pre-season was promising but also a reminder of his rawness. In the behind-closed-doors match at SC Verl, Gray produced a wonderful assist for Joel Piroe. Minutes later, he spurned a good one-on-one chance by taking too long to shoot.

He was also brought on during the matches against tougher opposition when fans were allowed to watch the games, and once again did not make much of an impact. This is not a criticism. The lad is not yet even of driving age. But it is to underline that he is only just starting out on his journey.

Having carefully managed brother Archie, Leeds are keen to do the same with Harry. Those around the club have explained that the younger sibling hardly lacks confidence, which they do not wish to quell. At the same time, the pathway must be curated dutifully.
....
Gray is continuing his development in academy fixtures while getting training experience with the senior stars, which seems the perfect mix right now. It's bearing fruit too.

His hat-trick against the first-team of Scunthorpe United in the National League Cup adds to his four goals in three Premier League 2 matches and the assist he provided in the EFL Trophy defeat to Port Vale.

In three week's time, Gray will turn 17 and be able to sign his first professional contract. It seems inconceivable Leeds will not tie the striker down at some point soon, even if not on his birthday itself.
...
But if Gray carries on as he is, that noise will only grow louder and Farke might have to comment on him again before too long.

I stedet for å skrive spøsmål/svar, her er Smyths artikkel.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke lays down Premier League pathway for hat-trick teenager Harry Gray

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has made it clear when Under 21s hat-trick hero Harry Gray will appear in the Premier League.

Goals have been the big issue for Leeds since they arrived back in the top flight at the start of this season. After four games they've got just one to their name and that was Lukas Nmecha's penalty in the opening fixture against Everton. Only Aston Villa have scored fewer than the Whites having failed to hit the net at all.

So when 16-year-old Gray fired in a midweek hat-trick for the Under 21s in the National League Cup against Scunthorpe United, it was inevitable that his name would crop up in Farke's press conference ahead of the trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Even if National League side Scunthorpe fielded fringe players there were some vastly experienced veteran defenders on show, one of whom told the YEP: "[Gray] looked good, plays like someone who has played the game for years, very comfortable. He's got a bright future for sure."

But scoring three against a National League team's second string is one thing and being ready to star at the elite level is quite another. And the hat-trick was not enough to tempt Farke into talking up the teenager as an option for his goal-shy front line just yet. What the German was willing to say was that his record of knowing when to throw youngsters in at the deep end.

"I've said everything I have to say about him in one of my last press conferences," said Farke. "I won't speak about him until we see him on the grass and I would say nothing has changed. In general, believe me, I'm far away from wanting to come across arrogant or over-confident but I've started my career in the fourth tier in Germany [where I needed to] develop young players in order to be able to sell them one day. I overtook the most important youth team in Germany at Borussia Dortmund, worked with some of the best talents in Europe and was trusted to develop these young players. At Norwich I replaced our club captain with a 20-year-old German centre-back and believe me it was not easy in the dressing room. In the second season I replaced a fan favourite and club captain Ivo Pinto with 18-year-old Max Aarons in his position and it was not easy in the dressing room.

"When I came to Leeds I had Archie Gray and we replaced a big leader, club legend Luke Ayling with a 17-year-old and it was not easy in the dressing room. Last season I played Mateo Joseph instead of Joel Piroe. I gave Harry his debut at 16 last season in the crunchtime period. If I would back a manager to be brave enough to play a young player and know what a young player needs I would pick me."

Gray has been part of Farke's senior set up for well over a year now, having been taken on two pre-season trips to Germany and been part of matchday squads in the Championship. He made his senior league debut as a late substitute against Stoke City late last season. According to Farke the 16-year-old needs more time before he's thrust into the spotlight at the top level.

"He needs training sessions with the first team to get used to proper physicality of men's football," said the boss. "He needs game time with the 21s to not lose his rhythm and confidence and striker instinct. What he needs most is time and peace in order to grow. You will see him once he's prepared for Premier League games and then we can speak about him more."

Leeds United training ground revelation allays fitness fears and Harry Gray education continues

Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has handled everything thrown at him at Thorp Arch so far and stepped into an off-field role previously held by Patrick Bamford.

alvert-Lewin scored his first goal as a Leeds player last weekend at Molineux, getting up highest to power in a header from a deflected Jayden Bogle cross. It was his first Premier League goal since January 19 when he scored for former club Everton at Spurs. In the very next match after that Toffees goal he came off injured with a hamstring injury that cost him 12 top flight fixtures.

When Leeds decided they would jump at an unexpected chance to sign the 11-cap England striker, their rationale was underpinned by a confidence their medical team had a recent history of keeping injury-risk players fit and available for Daniel Farke. Their work with Sam Byram, Manor Solomon and Junior Firpo was all cited, because all three men put their injury histories behind them to play more football than was perhaps expected or even hoped at Elland Road. And Farke's methods, a predictable schedule, plays into that.

It is still early days but Calvert-Lewin has now put a lack of pre-season behind him with a gradual build towards full match fitness. He may not yet be at his physical peak but important boxes have been ticked. First appearance off the bench, first Premier League start and at Wolves his first full 90 minute performance. Capping it with a goal was a particularly sweet bonus and a vital one because the sight of him leaping above a centre-back to nod into the net was precisely why Leeds signed him.

Harry Gray's education
There are other benefits, including the continuation of Harry Gray's education at Thorp Arch. Gray's openness to learning from his elders was shown in his relationship with Patrick Bamford. The ex-Leeds striker told Ben Foster's Fozcast: "When Archie came up he was obviously quiet but just got about it. Harry is chirpy. He is proper chirpy, but in a good way. He has got no problem with like having one of the first team players off. At 16, I swear I think in his head he knows he's good and as a striker. I remember when Archie was at Leeds, I went to watch the 18s or 21s and Harry was playing. He knows now because I told him but I literally went to watch just to see him and he was good and I thought he is going to be decent, when he comes up I will try and help him a little bit. To be fair, it's weird to say, but I think he looks up to me a little bit so I can kind of get away with him a little bit." When Bamford left the club Gray sought to repay the elder statesman's wisdom by doing Bamford's celebration when scoring for the Under 21s. Where once Bamford was the professor and Gray the student, Calvert-Lewin is now doing the teaching.

"[The goal was] very important for him," said Farke of his number nine. "And also a sign that he's on a good path. I have to say, from the day he walked in, he's brilliant with his attitude, with his character, I like his whole behavior in the dressing room, leading the young players, giving hints to, for example, Harry Gray. Great teammate, also with his experience, our most experienced player in terms of Premier League Appearances. And for that, he also tries, not in an artificial way, but in a natural way, step by step, to take more responsibility in the dressing room. But the most important responsibility is still what you would deliver on the pitch, and what he has done so far is amazing, even in this short term."

Calvert-Lewin fitness
Calvert-Lewin has shown in games that he can be a bully with his centre-forward play. He was effective in those terms at Wolves. He has shown he can get into great positions, as he did late on against Newcastle United and in the Fulham game, albeit without finding the net on those occasions. And for all the fears over his fitness, Calvert-Lewin is yet to miss a beat at the training ground.

"Imprints in the beginning, but also right now he's back in the starting line-up," said Farke. "Not just the goal, but also the workload, the physical data and I have experienced a great guy who is also very on it, very professional, has not missed one training session so far, is always doing additional work. He has perfect data in terms of strength, in terms of the way he jumps, in terms of his body fat, and always super, super professional. If he keeps going like this, then he will be a very important player for us, not just for this season, but also for the mid and the long-term future. And we're all happy to have him."

Smyth har i dag skrevet:
Harry Gray social media speculation
Fans monitoring the teenager's social media accounts have speculated that a move away from the club is in the offing but as far as Leeds are concerned a contract agreement is a matter of when and not if. And the player's camp expect it to get done in the next couple of weeks.

Gray would almost certainly have been part of the squad for the Elland Road clash with Spurs prior to the international break but he reported some issues with his hip flexor in the days leading up to the game.

This season his match action has come for the Under 21s in Premier League 2 with four goals and an assist from a quartet of appearances.
