LEEDS chairman Ken Bates has told boss Dennis Wise his job is safe â€" even if he fails to keep the club in the Championship.
Wise took over at Elland Road from Kevin Blackwell in October but under his guidance Leeds have won just seven of 25 games.
They are bottom of the table and poised to drop into League One for the first time in their history.
But a Leeds source said: "Relegation would be horrific but Dennis has the chairman’s complete backing and support."

Newell hits out at Luton board

Angry Luton boss Mike Newell laid the blame for his club's plight firmly at the feet of the club's board following the 2-1 defeat against Hull.
Luton slumped to second from bottom in the Championship and are looking like a team destined for the drop following a fifth straight reverse.
Newell has had Rowan Vine, Kevin Nicholls, Carlos Edwards and Steve Howard sold from under him this term - as well as Curtis Davies last summer - and been forced to replace them with youngsters.
And he echoed the sentiments of the home faithful who chanted "where's the money gone?" at the club's board.
"Where's the £9million gone?" blasted Newell.
"Give that to me and I'll get five experienced players in, I'll pay them fortunes and we'll get ourselves out of it.
"It takes three or four years to build a reputation as a decent manager and three months to lose that reputation. But if you take the four best players out of any team it will hurt them.
"Give me the money and I'll replace them - but I can't. The reason we're in this position is because we've sold our best players. Someone should investigate what's going on at this club."
David Livermore and Michael Turner did the damage at Kenilworth Road as Hull's survival bid gathered pace.
Livermore, only in the starting line-up after John Welsh broke a leg on Saturday, struck in the 21st minute for his fourth goal of the season and centre-half Turner hit a stunning centre-forward's volley as Hull grabbed a second successive win to move three points clear of the drop zone.
Newell also lost goalkeeper Marlon Beresford to a head injury to cap an unhappy night.
Drew Talbot pulled one back for Luton but Newell admits they are low on confidence with just eight games to save themselves.
"You get confidence from winning games and we need to do that, to start scoring goals and winning some games. We can't rely on other teams to do us favours with eight games to go," he added.
"To be booed off at half-time when you're inexperienced isn't going to give them much confidence for the second half."
Hull's revival under Phil Brown continues to gather pace following a second successive win, but the Tigers boss is not resting on his laurels just yet.
"It's not about our position now, it's about the end of the season and 41 points is not going to be enough," he said.
"But we're in some good form at the moment and we can go to Sunderland next week with a little less fear.
"We came with a game plan and played to it until we went two up and then it went out of the window. So the lesson is to stick to the game plan for 90 minutes, and now for the last eight games.
"Michael Turner has gone up front before but usually for his aerial ability, yet he hit that volley as sweet as a nut."

Venter for øvrig i spenning på Dennis´ bok "Leeds United in short".

Wise makes United pledge

Bøtteknotten!

DENNIS WISE today insisted his career with Leeds United would not be a short-term venture as the Elland Road club prepared for their critical visit to Southend United.
Wise will take United to Roots Hall tomorrow knowing a 24th league defeat would leave his team on the verge of relegation from the Championship, but the 40-year-old insisted his plans for Leeds were already stretching beyond the end of this season.
United's manager has been in position since October but has won only seven of his 26 games in charge, and Wise's future would be the subject of intense speculation if Leeds were to fall to League One at the end of his first campaign.
The club are three points from safety in the Championship but hampered further by a poor goal difference, and the gap will grow to six points if United fail to avoid defeat at Roots Hall tomorrow.
But Wise said: "It's far from over if we don't get a result against Southend. There are too many points to play for, and too many games that we've got a chance of winning.
"When it comes to the last game of the season, see where we are then. That's the important part.
"We haven't come here part-time, just todo the job for a few months. We've come here long-term, to try and sort this club out â€" to get it to where it belongs, which is in the Premiership.
"It's a hard time, and if we get through this it will be fantastic. We're going to have good times and bad times but you have to stay strong as a group, however it is.
"At the end of the day, you've got to live and die by your own decisions. And I will. We've been in charge for four-and-a-half months, and whatever happens is going to be down to me and Gus."
United are in reasonable form after last weekend's win over Luton and a midweek draw at Leicester, but Southend have produced a three-match unbeaten run and moved out of the relegation places on Tuesday.
A capacity crowd of just over 12,000 will pack Roots Hall tomorrow for United's first ever visit to the stadium.
Wise said: "I love these games. It's a really good game because everything's against us. They're a cute little club, with good supporters behind them and a good little team. They're very close and together.
"We were quite a few points behind at one stage and we've gradually clawed back a couple of teams. We've always been in with a shout, but 'okay' is probably the word. We can do better â€" a lot better."

Hørt sånt pisspreik...

"We`ve gradually clawed back a couple of teams"....

United by the fight, says Wise

DENNIS WISE has insisted the job of reviving Leeds United's fortunes is not too big for him and Gus Poyet as their side prepare for tomorrow's crunch relegation showdown with Southend United.

The Elland Road club are at their lowest ebb on the field and in grave danger of dropping out of the top two divisions for the first time.
Defeat tomorrow at fourth bottom Southend would leave Leeds six points, or seven if their shockingly bad goal difference is taken into account, adrift of safety with just seven games remaining.
Despite that, Wise remains in defiant mood as United prepare for their first ever visit to Roots Hall with the former England international stressing all is not lost for the Championship's bottom side.
Reflecting on his first four-and-a-half months in charge, he said: "It has been a bit mad, really, in terms of some of the situations.
"I have never known some of the things that have happened at this football club, happen anywhere else that I have been. We have had to deal with the mad things over the last four-and-a-half months. Crazy, really.
"But we are still in it. We still believe. We are slightly closer to certain teams than we were before. We were a few points behind at one stage and now we have gradually clawed back a few teams.
"There are other teams now that we look at think 'hold on, they are not quite out of it'. I don't think it would be very fair to mention the team because he is a friend of mine."
Burnley, whose manager Steve Cotterill was a former team-mate of Wise at Wimbledon, are a club in freefall at the moment after failing to win in 17 league games.
The Clarets remain six points clear of Leeds, however, and have two games in hand, while the two clubs level on points with the Lancashire outfit, Hull and Barnsley, are in good form.
Leeds are running out of games and the common consensus among supporters is the fight will be all but over if they fail to win at Southend.
Wise, however, has stressed that even if Leeds do not win tomorrow, all will not be lost. He said: "There would still be 21 points to play for, which is a hell of a lot. There will be a lot of ups and downs over the coming weeks.
"There are a few games we are looking at that we have a fantastic chance of winning. It is far from over if we do not get a result against Southend. There are too many points to play for."
Wise's reign at Elland Road started with a 2-0 home victory over Southend last October but United have managed just six more wins in their subsequent 24 outings.
It should be pointed out that Leeds were a club in disarray when the former Swindon and Millwall manager took over with embarrassing results on the pitch being accompanied by rumours of dressing room rifts off it.
The task of turning round the club is clearly huge but the United manager insists he and assistant Poyet are relishing the challenge.
He said: "We enjoy it. And no, it (the job) has never been too big for us. This is a learning curve and it is good for us. It is a hard time and if we get through this, it will be fantastic.
"We have had to change a lot of things and we have had to deal with situations. But at the end of the day we want to make this club a great club. That is why me and Gus came here.
"This is Leeds United and everyone expects. Six years ago, Leeds were in the Champions League. That brings a lot of expectation to the club.
"Unfortunately, it hasn't happened for a few years. But we are trying to change that. We have not come here part-time, to just do a job for a few months.
"We have come here long-term to try and sort this football club out. And to try and get it where it belongs, in the Premiership. That is what we want to achieve.
"We will have good times and bad times. But we have to stay strong as a group. We want to succeed and make it happen."
Wise even got support from an unexpected quarter yesterday when Prime minister Tony Blair backed the Leeds manager to steer the club clear of relegation.
Blair claimed former Millwall boss Wise was the right man to lift the current gloom at Elland Road.
Blair said: "I think Dennis Wise is a good manager and I know it's been tough for them but I hope they pull through it and actually I think they're showing a lot of spirit and a lot of fight.
"People are very passionate about their football.
"Sometimes they go through bad times, but I'm sure Leeds will pick up."
Blair was speaking after officially opening a new building at Carr Manor High School in Leeds.

Vel, time will show.
