Synes det lukter uavgjort, men seier hadde vært knall.

UNITED INJURY WORRY

Iron boss Nigel Adkins is awaiting news on the fitness of a trio of players in the run-up to Saturday's opening game of the season with Leeds United.
With Joe Murphy, Andy Crosby and Joe Wilcox already on the injury list, the cause was not helped by the withdrawal of winger Garry Thompson prior to the County Cup final with Grimsby due to a hip problem picked up in training. And worse was to follow as Ben May limped off early on in the 4-0 win against the Mariners with a bruised Achilles.

http://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/sport/League-One-Duo-doubtful-for.4354657.jp

Ben May and Gary Hooper are both doubtful for Scunthorpe's opening game of the season against Leeds United on Saturday after picking up injuries.
The pair were substituted during the friendly win against Lincoln at Glanford Park.

"Ben May felt his ankle in the warm-up," manager Nigel Adkins said. "We gave him five minutes but for me he clearly wasn't right so we took him off.

"He has got bruising around his Achilles area.

"Gary Hooper took a kick on his knee so we took him off too.

"We will just have to see how they respond to treatment during the course of the week."

PS. Håper på to seiere :-\

ADKINS EXPECTS DUO TO FACE WHITES
Manager Nigel Adkins expects to have winger Garry Thompson and striker Gary Hooper fit for Scunthorpe's season-opener against Leeds.
Thompson has been struggling with a hip problem and Hooper hobbled out of the 4-0 win over Grimsby at the weekend but Adkins is hopeful of having the attacking duo at his disposal against Gary McAllister's men.
"He (Thompson) did some running on Monday and if there is no reaction will join in full training on Tuesday," Adkins said.
"We are hopeful he will be available for the Leeds game."
On Hooper, Adkins added in the Scunthorpe Telegraph: "He was scoring goals for fun in training on Monday and will be okay."

Choice of strikers for opening game

Luciano Becchio is expected to be fit to face Scunthorpe in Saturday’s season opener, giving Leeds manager Gary McAllister an early headache.
The Argentinian striker provides a mobile, skilful partner for Jermaine Beckford but is unproven in English football, while United’s other new signing Enoch Showunmi is less agile but provides more power.
In addition, Showunmi knows what it takes to be promoted from League One, having achieved it twice before with Luton and Bristol City.
He has also completed the whole of pre-season training so will be F***er at this stage than Becchio and is therefore likely to get the starting place, with the former Barcelona striker coming off the bench.
McAllister seems settled with his goalkeeper and back four, having played them in the final pre-season games, but there are still question marks in midfield.
New signing Andy Robinson seems certain to fill one of the wide berths but McAllister will have to decide whether to play a second winger in the form of Robert Snodgrass or have a more solid central midfield trio.

Ankergren var man of the match.

Scunthorpe Awaydaze

As you probably know, we’re starting the season before the rest of the division, with kick off against Scunthorpe United being at high noon on Saturday.
The ground is on the outskirts of Scunthorpe, and it’s easy to find if you’re coming by car. Leave the M180 at Junction 3 and take the M181 for Scunthorpe. At the end of this motorway, you will see the ground on your right. Turn right at the first roundabout onto the A18 and right again into the large car park at the ground. But like all other out of town grounds, they get a lot of congestion on the surrounding roads, as a higher proportion of the crowd have to drive to get to the game, compared to grounds that are located more centrally.
Unfortunately, the car park can take a long time to clear after the game, and it can’t handle all the cars that turn up whenever they have a capacity crowd, so they tend to end up with cars parked by the side of the road in all directions at the junction between the M180 and the A18.
The other disadvantage of out of town grounds is that their not easily accessible by public transport. If you’re arriving by train, you’ll go right past the ground on the way into town, and then have the frustration of having to continue for two miles before you can get off at Scunthorpe station. It’s about time they got round to building a new station at the ground, which could be put right behind the away end.
If you’ve got the energy to walk all the way back (and if you don’t get rounded up by the police as soon as you get off the train) you need to turn left out of the station and head towards the crossroads (facing a church) and turn right into Oswald Road. Go past a set of traffic lights and the Honest Lawyer and Blue Bell pubs. At the next traffic lights turn left into Doncaster Road (where there are a number of fast food outlets). Then just go straight down this road and you will eventually reach Glanford Park on your left. Otherwise catch the number 7 or 8 Yellow Line bus from the bottom of Doncaster Road (outside the Atlantis Chippy) down to the ground (fare £1).
After the FA cup tie in 2003 the police made us all wait behind for an escort back to the station, which turned out to be necessary when we met a group of Scunthorpe youths who were hanging round to try and have a go at us outside the ground. The police then treated us to our own segregated carriage of the train all the way back as far as Doncaster.
There is one pub right at the entrance to the ground called 'The Old Farmhouse', which usually welcomes all fans but no colours are allowed, and another pub near the ground that usually admits away fans pub is the Sam Smiths ‘Berkeley’. But it remains to be seen what door policy these establishments will adopt on the day, and of course they won’t be open before the game. If you’re travelling by train, the above-mentioned ‘Honest Lawyer’ and ‘Blue Bell’ pubs are worth a visit. The first of these has been listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and has a number of beers on offer, while the latter is a Wetherspoons
In 1988 Scunthorpe began the trend of clubs moving to bland out of town grounds, when they sold their town centre Old Show Ground and built Glanford Park, making £1 million profit in the process. It was the first new league football ground to be built since the Second World War. The away end was originally terracing, but  unfortunately Scunthorpe are one of those infuriating clubs who converted their away end to all-seater when they weren’t required to by the Taylor Report.
All of which means that we have to pay £3 than the standing home fans at the other end, for the privilege of having seats that we don’t want. The normal away allocation is 1,678, which is the whole of the South Stand, but bigger clubs also get an extra block of seats in the corner of the west stand. This end is covered, but there are one or two pillars that might spoil the view from certain seats.
The Leeds end has long since sold out, and for home fans there are only standing tickets left. Their official website says that “online sales remain suspended after away fans tried to buy tickets for the home stands”, but they don’t mention any restrictions on who can buy tickets if you turn up at the ground, so if you’ve got a reasonably local address you might be in luck.
Of course, if they hadn’t reduced the capacity of the away end by putting the seats in, there wouldn’t be quite as much demand from Leeds fans for seats elsewhere in the ground. It is of course a category A match, which means that tickets in the Leeds end cost £19 for adults, with concessions at £11.
The current capacity is a mere 9,088, but the club have submitted a planning application to build a tier of seating above the terrace at north end, which would raise the overall capacity of Glanford Park to 11,000, as well as providing all-important conference and leisure facilities.
Some of the information in this article came from www.footballgroundguide.co.uk, though the grumpy old man bits about out of town stadia and seating are all my own.

Litt mange ord.

What Have Scunthorpe United Got In Common With....
By Batfastard August 7 2008
....Manchester City, Everton and Arsenal? Well, at the moment, probably nothing. But hopefully by Saturday afternoon they will be able to include themselves alongside the Premiership big boys on the victim-list of one the most astonishing unbeaten runs in English football. Despite Leeds United’s recent fall from grace, they have managed to maintain what is probably a record-breaking sequence of opening day fixtures without defeat, which stretches back a full 19 years. Now, the more astute amongst you will have noticed the use of the word ‘probably’ in the above statement and could well be querying its usage in the above context. Well, it’s quite simple really â€" I couldn’t be bothered looking it up. But I certainly think it’s a record and â€" whether it is or it isn’t â€" it is certainly a hugely impressive achievement.

And it certainly started back in 1990 when a newly-promoted Leeds United played their first top flight game in 8 years as they visited Goodison Park and raced into a 3-0 half-time lead against Everton, with goals from Chris Fairclough, Gary Speed and Imre Varadi. The game is perhaps best remembered, though, for Everton goalkeeper, Neville Southall’s infamous half-time sulk, in which he returned to the field and spent the entire half-time break slouched against one of the goalposts. He later explained that he didn’t feel the dressing room rollicking his team mates were receiving applied to him â€" an explanation that did not endear him to the home fans, who regaled their former dustman ‘keeper with an array of “Once a binman, always a binman” banners at subsequent matches.

And â€" although his freshly-rollicked team mates pulled two second half goals back â€" Leeds held on and the opening day run had begun. It continued the following year as we began our Championship winning season with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Elland Road , courtesy of a goal by current manager, Gary McAllister; while a brace from Lee Chapman secured a 2-1 home win over Wimbledon, the following season.

The next two seasons both saw opening day away draws â€" Brian Deane netting in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Maine Road in 1993-4; whilst the lads scrapped to a goalless draw at West Ham the season after. Upton Park was again the venue for our curtain-raiser to the 1995-6 season, where legend Tony Yeboah bagged both goals in a 2-1 victory, before firing home the eventual goal of the season just two days later with his unforgettable volley against Liverpool at Elland Road in front of the Monday night Sky cameras.

We then enjoyed four consecutive opening day draws: 3-3 at Derby County (Harte, Bowyer and an own goal from Laursen); a 1-1 home draw with Arsenal marked by a blistering debut goal from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink; goalless at Middlesbrough the following year and goalless again against Derby, this time at Elland Road.

In 2000-01 we beat Everton 2-0 at Elland Road with a brace from Alan Smith to kick off the season that would mark our zenith under David O’Leary with a Champions League Semi Final appearance. And Smithy was on target again with a sublime finish the season after against Southampton, having come on as a substitute. Lee Bowyer grabbed our other goal in a 2-0 victory.

2002-03 marked the beginning of Terry Venables’ short tenure and things started promisingly with a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City.

A year later and Peter Reid became the third manager in as many years to preside over our opening match. Alan Shearer opened the scoring at Elland Road for Newcastle United, but goals from Mark Viduka and another cool finish from Alan Smith put us ahead. For Smith this was 3 goals in 4 years on opening day and he marked the feat with a display of badge kissing passion that was to immortalise him in the eyes of Leeds fans everywhere for almost precisely nine months, after which we hated his guts. Back to the game and a late second goal from Alan Shearer denied us a deserved victory as the Geordie striker demonstrated why he holds the record for being the most prolific opposing striker in Elland Road history. Well, probably anyway.

The season after â€" our first in the Championship â€" and yet another new manager, Kevin Blackwell was in the hot seat as we won our opening game (once again against Derby County) with a Frazer Richardson goal at Elland Road. Our other two Championship seasons opened with a 2-1 home win over Milwall (David Healy brace) and a 1-0 victory over Norwich City (David Healy penalty) in the season which was to see us relegated to League One.

This time we had Dennis Wise in charge and our opening fixture involved a trip across the M62 to Tranmere. The home team dominated the first half and deservedly led 1-0 at the break and our record looked on the verge of collapse….. but a rallying second half performance saw an equaliser from Matt Heath and then â€" almost unbelievably â€" in the final minute up popped Tresor Kandol to score a very great goal in the Scou â€" erm â€" opponent’s net, thus fulfilling the prophecy foretold in the song. Or perhaps the song came afterwards. I guess we’ll never know.

Either way, the record remained in tact and here we are, with the excitement once again mounting towards the big kick off and Scunthorpe United have the opportunity to succeed where the likes of Manchester City, Everton and Arsenal all failed. Although it is many years since we last met the Iron in a league fixture, it is undoubtedly a mark of our descent that they are the next obstacle to maintaining our proud record. And if we lose? Well, all good things come to an end eventually….but, take heart. Our last opening day defeat was a 5-2 thumping at Newcastle’s St James Park, way back in 1989 in the old Second Division…. and guess what? We recovered from that defeat and went on to win the title â€" the last Leeds team to achieve a promotion! So whatever happens on Saturday â€" there’s a good omen in there somewhere!
