Leeds United under-18's reach play-offs following Ipswich win

Leeds United’s Under-18s have reached their divisional play-offs after an 18th win of the season at home to Ipswich Town.

Leeds United’s Under-18s have reached their divisional play-offs after an 18th win of the season at home to Ipswich Town.

Leeds United under-18's secure play-off spot.
Leeds United under-18's secure play-off spot.
Mark Jackson’s side claimed a 3-0 victory at Thorp Arch yesterday to book their place in the semi-finals and extend their winning run to six matches.

The result left United joint top of the northern half of the Professional Development League, level with Bolton Wanderers who hold a game in hand.

Bolton have already qualified for the play-offs, along with southern section leaders Crystal Palace. Charlton Athletic look set to complete the line-up for the end of season knock-outs.

United’s Under-18s have progressed rapidly after finishing third bottom in the table last season. That campaign was affected by a shortage of academy players, forcing a number of prominent Under-18 squad members to feature for the Under-23s instead.

Leeds, however, made a large number of additions to their development squad over the summer and speaking to the YEP last month, academy manager Adam Underwood said: “For the majority of the 23s games last season, a lot of 18s were having to fulfil what we’d normally expect young pros to do.

“It had a knock on effect with the results and it was too much for a lot of them - a great experience but it was a losing team.

“That’s the one thing that’s really changed - the whole environment around the 23s and the 18s. There were 18s getting pushed up which was decimating them. Now we’ve got two, full healthy groups.”

First-half goals from Theo Hudson, Nohan Kenneh and Niall Huggins set United up for a straightforward win over Ipswich and Leeds are due to wrap up their regular season away at Bolton Wanderers on Friday. A victory over Bolton could see Jackson’s side top the division.

Leeds and Bolton play Friday. If Bolton beat Crewe tomorrow then they'll almost certainly top the league but if not, Leeds can still finish first.

Litt mer om U18 laget fra noen som følger dem tett:

Benny Tayls
Some of These lads are ‘the real deal’ Dean  #lufc

Kenneth Roy Brown
Thing is there all capable of being the real deal look at Alfie spent all season raving about the likes of Clarke and Kamwa & others then this lad just starts blossoming now he could be real deal lol

Benny Tayls
Exactly 100% due to the likes of Clarke Shackleton Nicell being promoted to the 23s & Kitching going on Loan to Harrogate its allowed McCalmont/Hudson/Casey/Kenneh to really  flourish

Kenneth Roy Brown
Agree although Hudson would have still flourished only injury has held him back now he’s fit he’s scoring for fun he’s ripping that league up tbh

Benny Tayls
Yep absolutely he was really unlucky to get a serious injury half way through his 16s season last year,he was getting Eng 16s call up before his injury, but now he’s fully fit & getting a run of games look at him flourish now still only a 1st yr Scholar

Kenneth Roy Brown
Signed on at same time as Clarke and I think Lyons as well about 5 of them I think all signed as first year scholars together

Benny Tayls
Yep this years 1st years vvvgood Casey Lyons Hudson Male Clarke Huggins Stanley Odunston some serious talent & technically Edmondson is a too brought in a 16

Kenneth Roy Brown
Be interesting on Friday but what will be interesting is the play offs will that be over 2 legs ?

Benny Tayls
Yeah be great if we won but not the be all end all these lads have had an incredible season

Kenneth Roy Brown
Remember when Kewell and Smiths group came through they played such good football my mates watched em home and away went to Everton on a night game played breathtaking football watching g first team after was a real downer lol

BT
Lol not quite to that level but I totally get the sentiment  they where a breathtaking crop

KRB
Was a lot like today really kid abseloutley fantastic first team dog poo lol

BT
Ha ha very true Ken .. this 18s is something for the fans to get reakiy excited by they are the future

KRB
Do the under 16s play in a league just wonder how they are doing ?

BT
They don’t play in a league they just play same fixture list as 18s

KRB
Thought so when you look at the lads that played today for under 18s there’s a few that could be called up,to play in play offs like Clarke Hun  Edmondson and even Shackleton if they wanted to

BT
Exactly Jackson hasn’t been able to play a full strength XI all season pretty much for various diff reasons, last time they came close to doing so was Burnley in the Cup in Nov even then they where missing Edmondson Huggins Stanley

Gerry Mc Dermott
As much as we all would love a trophy, the biggest trophy is getting a player into the first team.

BT
Absolutely on the money Gerry

BT
Things is a lot of these 18s are used to winning games & tournaments

Leeds United Under 18s Set Up Crunch Match to Become Champions of the North

The Doctor T Blog
thedoctortblog

A strong wind blew at Thorp Arch as the Leeds United under-18s sailed past Ipswich and into a national Play-Off Semi Final. Mark Jackson’s classy side cruised to a 3-0 win, spellbinding in the first forty-five minutes, resolute in the second. A peach of a goal from Theo Hudson not a bad at all one from Noan Kenneh and a neat finish from Niall Huggins secured the vital three points by half-time and a showdown against table toppers Bolton on Saturday will decide who finishes top of the Northern Section of the Category B League.

‘To win the league would be nice and the boys have set their own targets as far as that’s concerned but as a coach it’s all about development at this level’, said Coach and former Leeds player Mark Jackson. ‘We have a way of playing right through the age groups and we think it sets them up right. We have a culture at the Academy’, and that certainly showed against the Suffolk outfit who were left chasing shadows for much of the first half as the home team’s passing was practically flawless, playing football that certainly be described as cultured.

Jackson is philosophical about the nature of coaching. To finish the season as champions would be nice but he knows it’s about readying his charges to step out one day on the big stage at Elland Road. Born close to the ground himself, if he weren’t coaching at the club he would  most likely be at Elland Road on Saturday afternoons as a fan. A Beeston lad he made 19 appearances for the senior team before a successful spell at Scunthorpe.

‘What is particularly pleasing is that we have got some young lads out there today who are in their first year and so many real talents who weren’t playing today. Some of these lads I’ve worked with for two years now but the younger ones are coming through.’

‘It’s great to see these lads step up’ he says when asked if it’s difficult for him personally when players leave him at 18. ‘They never really leave you. We have an ethos here where the coaches work together. Each coach has his particular strengths and might be able to help with a player whatever the age group.’

Leeds are indeed blessed with some precocious talent but it is as noticeable that there are fifteen and sixteen year olds  who are built like grown men.

‘We don’t go out of our way to look for big players. We look for talent. We have made great steps with the physical conditioning side of things but if they’re big lads it’s just a coincidence, talent comes first.’

The first team play in a physical league and that the u18s are a blend of strength, athleticism and class must be reassuring for Director of Football, Victor Orta though perhaps it is hoped that these lads will make their bows in the Premier League. As former striker Richard Cresswell watched from the side-lines his fifteen year old lad Charlie was spraying balls around from centre back, comfortably over six foot, built like a proverbial outbuilding and boots F***ed with radar.  One shouldn’t pick out individuals from what is a team game but it is hard not to note some of the outstanding performers. The robustly confident defender, new to the club after Dad encouraged him to keep enjoying playing with his mates, is certainly one to watch. Watching these lads has a lot to commend it.

Theo Hudson, a lad with a left foot worth insuring at Lloyds of London caught the eye with a beautifully taken goal that started curling a furlong or two outside the far post before it decided to settle into the corner of the net. He didn’t stop smiling for at leat half an hour.

Skipper Alfie McMalmont and Lucas Odunston are neat and tidy teenagers who never give the ball away. Huggins does what it says on the can, hugging the touchline and like Hudson, drifting in reaping havoc.  Kumwenda is an intelligent and condfident  runner up front. Burlace and Gotts are ball-playing full backs who defend like they own the flanks.

There are others who didn’t feature who have bright futures. ‘Keeper Joshua Rae, brought in from Celtic and widely admired impressed in the previous two games but sat out today with Harrison Male taking the number 1 shirt. The Yeboahesque Kamwa limped off early and a litany of talent are otherwise engaged. The ever polite and marvellously talented Jack Clarke for example, watched from the touchline kind enough to help me with identifying players who have yet to become familiar faces. The fact that the under sixteens joined lauded graduates Tom Pearce, Paudie O’Connor and unused first team sub Callum Nicell as sectaors, was nice to see. They are a nice bunch, engaging and chatty, any arrogance is only shown on the pitch with some audacious touches of skill.

Matt Keogh, another impressively Centre-Back shaped Centre-Back came on in the second half when Ipswich decided there was something in the game and he and his defensive partner Oliver Casey helped see out a clean sheet. Three points, three more  tto the positive on goal difference and the stage is set for the big game on Saturday to decide who is crowned Champion of the North.

‘It’s nice for the lads to be involved in big games and feel that pressure,’ said Jackson who doesn’t worry  that some of his star performers might be denied him for the game as the more senior sides come calling.

It isn’t all about winning at the Academy but it sure isn’t a bad thing.

This result means Charlton have joined Crystal Palace in the #U18PDL2 South playoffs, whilst Bolton & Leeds have tied up the North spots.

Final seedings are yet to be decided for the Playoff Semi Final draw but Palace have won the South title and will play the North runners-up.
