Carlisle boss unhappy with gossip
Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott has admitted he is frustrated by speculation linking him with players during the January transfer window.
"I just think it doesn't do us any good," Abbott told BBC Radio Cumbria. "If we do alert the bigger clubs they just out-muscle us with money.

Old pals set for showdown
The afflictions suffered by Carlisle United this season are not, in Greg Abbott's opinion, the symptoms of a hangover, but the Brunton Park boss has been startled by the changing of the guard in League One.

Graham shrugs off transfer talk

Carlisle United striker Danny Graham is ignoring speculation over his future following a bid from League One rivals Huddersfield Town.
The Terriers have had a £250,000 bid for the 23-year-old rejected by the Brunton Park club.
"It's obviously nice to be wanted," Graham told BBC Radio Cumbria. "But at the minute my head is just focusing on Saturday's game against Leeds.
"I'm a Carlisle player and it remains that way until something changes."
Graham has scored 13 times this season, including the first in the 3-0 Boxing Day win against the Terriers.
"I'm happy at the club, I've stated that before," Graham said.
"There has been an offer for me but it has been rejected end of story and look forward to Saturday."
Graham admits he is not a fan of the January transfer window.
"I think a lot of managers would say they are not a fan of the window," he said. "It might unsettle a few players but not me.
"It's something I don't want to get too focused on. Like I say, I'm a Carlisle player until anything changes and I just want to get on and play football."
Graham, who made 15 appearances for Middlesbrough before a permanent switch to Brunton Park in the summer of 2007, is confident the Cumbrians can get something from their trip to Elland Road.
"We always seem to play better against the better teams in this league," Graham said. "Leeds away at Elland Road with 30,000 fans...what more do you want as a footballer?
"If we can get a couple of wins over the next few weeks it could take us right out of the bottom four.
"We've got to stick together as a team and as a group and hopefully we will move up the table soon," he added.

Bridges planning ‘quiet’ celebration against ex-club Leeds

MICHAEL Bridges insists he won’t rub Leeds fans’ noses in it if he scores a dream goal on his return to Elland Road.

Flashback: Leeds United’s Michael Bridges takes on Barcelona’s Frank De Boer in a Champions
League clash as Stephen McPhail, right, looks on

The former £5 million striker, who played Champions League football in a memorable four-year stint with the Yorkshire club, will bid to help Carlisle United achieve an eyecatching victory tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).
But the 30-year-old says he won’t go overboard if he gets on the scoresheet. “To score would be very sweet, I can tell you, but I never tend to celebrate against teams where I’ve had success,” said Bridges.
“I’m a bit more discreet against my old clubs. So it will just be a nice, quiet celebration afterwards – hopefully.”
Bridges admits the memories will come flooding back when he runs out in front of a 20,000+ crowd at Elland Road tomorrow.
“It will be interesting to see what kind of reception I get, but it doesn’t bother me if I get a bit of stick – that’s part and parcel of football,” said the frontman, who is on a season-long loan from Hull City. “I have still got some friends down there who are coming along and it should be a good occasion.
“I had four years there – two of them great, two not so great with injuries – and one of my abiding memories is the day I signed. Just being shown around the place, the size of it. And the pinnacle of my time there would have to be the Champions League semi-final.
“The European trips were fantastic, apart from the Turkish antics when they were setting the fire alarms off in our hotel every hour and we had to get extra security in. But they were great, great times and those boys still get together as often as we can.
“I think Frazer Richardson is the only player still there from my time, but this weekend isn’t about renewing friendships – it’s about three points.”
Bridges believes the way United performed on their last visit to Elland Road – their memorable 2-1 play-off first leg victory in May – should ensure they do not get stage fright tomorrow.
And he believes it could be a good time to face Simon Grayson’s side, who are attempting to kickstart their own season after sliding to ninth in League One.
“They are at a vulnerable time by their standards, and we have to try and capitalise on that. I think we are capable of going there and doing that.
“You can’t be scared of Leeds United just because they are a big club. We can match them. We have started putting in a few performances ourselves and if we can make that pitch big we’ve got a chance.”
Bridges is finally getting a run in the side under Greg Abbott and is determined to have a big impact on the second half of United’s campaign.
“It has been a waiting game for me – I didn’t get as many games as I would have liked under the previous manager – but I’ve got my chance now and hopefully I can capitalise on it,” he added.

Spotlight on Carlisle United

YEP chief football writer Phil Hay takes a close look at Leeds United's opponents tomorrow - Carlisle United.

The Gaffer
Greg Abbott.
Leeds United's former youth-team coach was thrust into the firing line at Brunton Park after Carlisle United parted company with John Ward at the start of November.
Ward's exit followed a dire run of 11 matches without a victory, and assistant boss Abbott was named as his replacement on an 18-month contract after six matches as caretaker.
That temporary spell in charge was his second at Brunton Park, following on from his caretaker role in the wake of Neil McDonald's sacking in 2007, and the job he took last month is his first full-time role as a manager.
Abbott is a former Bradford City and Hull City player who worked with the academy at Leeds before moving to Carlisle to become their assistant in 2006.

The Danger
Danny Graham is Carlisle's leading striker and was the subject of a £250,000 bid from Huddersfield Town this week, but his goalscoring form has been inconsistent since he was named as League One's player of the month for August.
United's defenders are likely to be well prepared for the physical challenge Graham presents, but they will be equally aware of the importance of Marc Bridge-Wilkinson to Carlisle's midfield.
By all accounts, Bridge-Wilkinson has not enjoyed the best of seasons but no Carlisle player provided more assists during the 2007-08 term.

The Form
Carlisle joined Leeds on the sidelines last Saturday after their game against Walsall was called off due to a frozen pitch at Brunton Park, and the Cumbrian club have entered the new year with the threat of relegation on their minds.
A terrible start to the season, in which Carlisle won four of 15 league matches, earned Ward the sack, and their league position remains precarious.
With Abbott in charge, the Blues have claimed four victories from 11 matches and are sitting three points ahead of League One's bottom four.
Their away record is particularly poor, and 12 league fixtures on the road have produced just five points and seven goals.

The Odds
Carlisle are a massive 4-1 to win at Elland Road, as they did on their last visit to the stadium. William Hill make Leeds 4-7 favourites, while the draw is a lengthy 5-2.

The Whistler
Kevin Friend.
Leicestershire's Friend took charge of Leeds' Carling Cup victory over Crystal Palace in August.
Friend has issued three red cards and 73 bookings this term.

Time to switch our focus to the play-offs

Peter Lorimer
Talking Soccer

There is no use in pretending that the play-offs were Leeds United's goal this season or that we would have settled for that scenario before the season started.
The play-offs were the dreaded outcome for so many supporters, mainly because our experience of them has been so painful, but I'd be sticking my head in the sand if I said that they weren't our present priority and our most important target.
The ideal end to this campaign was automatic promotion to the Championship but I sense a feeling of realism among the players and the new management team at Elland Road – an acceptance that the first thing the club must worry about earning is the right to a play-off place in League One.
Tomorrow's game against Carlisle United will be, I hope, the start of an onslaught from Leeds during the second half of the season.
The club have been set up nicely by their results against Leicester City and Stockport County and it's very important to be positive about the thought of rising back into the play-off zone, rather than be negative about the fact that automatic promotion has almost crept away.
Leeds have already made up ground on the top six in Simon Grayson's first two matches as manager and it's pleasing to think that we're going into our game against Carlisle at Elland Road with a mood of confidence
There were nerves around the stadium before Colchester United's arrival last month and trepidation leading up to the visit of Leicester, but Simon's appointment has given the club a fresh start.
If the performance at Stockport was anything to go by, the players must have been itching to get onto the pitch against Hereford United last Saturday.
The postponement at Edgar Street was obviously a frustration but from a fitness point of view it might have its advantages.
Jermaine Beckford was touch and go with his hamstring before the match, and hopefully he'll be fighting fit and ready to help us to an important home win. We've seen recently how much we need him.
A look through the fixtures between now and the end of the season shows how crucial our home form is going to be.
I know that every game is vital, to use the old cliche, but successful campaigns are almost always built on good results at home.
If we continue to dominate at Elland Road – as we have for much of this campaign – I have absolutely no doubt that we will be sitting in the top six by May.
With MK Dons 13 points clear of us in second place, the top six has to be the ambition.
Some people will still hold out hope of automatic promotion – and I'm sure Simon himself is hopeful that it is not beyond the reach of his squad – but I cannot see Leicester or MK Dons dropping many points while they remain in their current form, and it is putting unfair pressure on United's manager to expect him to make that prize attainable again.
If he does achieve a top-two finish then he will receive all the credit in the world, but he's been asked to sort out a team who were dropping down the division like a stone.
In a way, he's attempting to overturn a deficit like the one Leeds were handed by the Football League last season.
He'll know himself that the brief is to enter the play-off zone and look forward from there.
What I've seen during his reign so far is a team who are better and brighter than they were three weeks ago. It leaves me confident that the play-offs are well within our grasp and that the rot which set in is not permanent.
Expectation is a good thing, and you always have it at Leeds, but what we must not do is burden Simon with a goal which is extremely difficult to achieve. The play-offs are the target he should focus on.

Coach Kavanagh

Graham Kavanagh has today joined Carlisle United as a player coach, he originally joined Carlisle on loan in October 2008. He played 14 games for the Black Cats before he struggling to make Sunderland's first team after a series of injury's plagued the midfielder. He was signed by Roy Keane for £500,000 from Wigan Athletic, but has since seen loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle United, he will probably be best remembered for his outstanding performance against Leeds which seen Sunderland win 3-1. I'd like to wish Graham all the best for the future, and thank him on behalf of the Sunderland fans for his time and great service to our club.

Kavanagh takes up Carlisle role

Ny kamp, folkens!

Ankergren
Richardson - Michalik - Marques - Sheehan
Snodgrass - Douglas - Prutton - Delph
Trundle - Beckford

Mitt tips:
LEEDS 2-1 Carlisle

Team News From The Leeds Camp

"With a new manager and new methods of work we have a chance to clear our heads and bring back our confidence"
Whites centre-half Rui Marques spoke to the Yorkshire Evening Post about how the Leeds players have found some more confidence since the arrival of new boss Simon Grayson, Marques suggesting that it is positive for the whole group :
" The problem for us was a mental one and that's very hard to come out of. It wasn't really about doubting ourselves but when you're conceding a lot of goals you know that something is wrong. I've been in that situation a couple of times in my career, not just at Leeds, and it's one of the most difficult moments when you're suffering from these mental effects.
" Every time we started a game - and even when you're trying to do your best - we always had the feeling that we were going to concede a goal. Even when we played well, there would be one minute when we would concede. It's not a feeling you like to have. I believe it was a mental thing in the last games we had under Gary (McAllister).
"It was a problem not just with me but with most of the lads. With a new manager and new methods of work we have a chance to clear our heads and bring back our confidence. This is everything to do with confidence and it's about believing. It's positive for the whole group of players that the manager is making us feel that we can do much better and improve - making us feel that we can still do a job."
Meanwhile pantomime villain Lee Trundle managed to stay on his feet long enough to comment to Yorkshire Radio on his one-month loan move to Elland Road from Bristol City today :
" I haven't played much first team this season and it's been frustrating for me. I'd been looking to go on loan and Leeds is a massive club. To go there, have a month, get some games in, and in front of a massive crowd...it's exciting for me.
" If it was going to be a League One club I joined on loan it would only be Leeds United. It's massive, and to have the chance to play in front of that many fans is going to be brilliant for me. Everything seems in place at Leeds and it's about pushing on. They were unlucky last year, but hopefully they will go one better this season.
" I hope the Leeds fans will get behind me and I hope to repay them with some goals. I'm ready if called upon. I've been working hard in training and playing reserve games. It's not the same but I have my match fitness.
" If I am involved on Saturday that will be brilliant. I've played most of my football in this division and had good times in it. I'm looking forward to getting back, getting some games in, and hope to bring some experience. "
In team news for Leeds another pantomime villain, in Carlisle-born centre-half Paul Huntington, is sidelined as he continues to recover from groin surgery. He seems to be the only home player out through injury though with Trundle also added to an already bulging Leeds squad.
The referee for tomorrow's match is Kevin Friend from Leicester, and he will be assisted down the lines by two Bury men in Nicholas Greenhalgh and Darren Handley. Meanwhile the fourth official is Alf Greenwood from York.

United's Danny Graham will be up for Leeds says Michael Bridges

Michael Bridges believes his sought-after strike partner Danny Graham won’t be distracted by the growing speculation over his Carlisle United future.

Danny Graham

Graham was set to lead the Blues line at Leeds today at the end of a week when he has been targeted by a string of clubs in the transfer window.
Huddersfield failed with a £250,000 bid while Charlton are leading a cluster of Championship clubs in the race for the striker, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
But Bridges believes Graham and his United team-mates will not have transfer talk on their minds when they go into battle at Elland Road this afternoon.
“Players tend to handle this sort of thing better than, say, agents or some supporters,” said Bridges, today back at the club where he played Champions League football before injuries put his career in decline.
“We get used to it and you can’t let it affect your performances. It doesn’t matter what’s going on – once you’re across that white line, it’s down to business.”
Bridges said he is not surprised to learn that Graham is a wanted man and news of the chase for the ex-Middlesbrough striker has left the Cumbrians with some big decisions to make.
“You don’t want to lose a player of Danny’s calibre,” said Bridges.
“But he has been scoring goals, he is in the last year of his contract, clubs know that and they are going to be sniffing around.
“I was in a similar position a few years ago here with the Hull situation. It would be nice to think we can hold onto him but in the January window, money talks.
“If you’re going to lose someone on a free you’re sometimes better off getting the cash for them. But that sort of decision is up to the club.”
Bridges believes his strike partnership with Graham is developing well and hopes it can make the difference at Elland Road today.
“We have been working well together, we’ve set each other up for goals and it’s going well,” said Bridges.
“Getting a result at Leeds is achievable. Other teams have gone there and won, and with the form that we are on, I don’t see why we can’t do the same.”

Frykter ikke Bridges- han hadde sin beste tid i Leeds, siden har det bare gått nedover.

League One
Leeds United v Carlisle United

Team news: Jermaine Beckford remains a major doubt with the hamstring injury that forced United's leading scorer to be substituted in the club's last game, the 3-1 victory at Stockport County.
The striker has been undergoing intensive training but still may not be ready to face a Carlisle side led by former Leeds Academy coach Greg Abbott.
Bradley Johnson may feature after returning from a loan stint at Brighton where he netted five goals in 10 appearances.

Simon Grayson: We have tried to make them feel like £1million players again. There are some talented players here. They have been working hard in training but they are back to enjoying themselves as well."

Marching on together!
