Neil Redfearn is anticipating a "tough game" when Brentford visit Elland Road on Saturday afternoon (3pm), but the head coach has his sights set firmly on continuing to climb up the division.
After sealing promotion from League One last season, Mark Warburton’s Brentford occupy fifth place in the Championship table and arrive in West Yorkshire having won three of their last four games.
"It’s going to be a tough game," said Redfearn. "I rate Brentford really highly.
"I think they’re a good side, a good football side. They can mix it.
"If it’s tough, they can make it tough. They can fight and play at a tempo.
"They’ve got good players in wide positions and a lot of pace and energy. It’s going to be a tough game."
However, United have been in impressive form themselves of late, securing back-to-back victories for only the second time this season and going unbeaten in the league throughout January.
The recent run has seen Redfearn’s side climb to 19th place, creating a five-point cushion above the bottom three, and just two points separates them from the top half of the table.
"It’s become very tight now, the league table," said Redfearn.
"I think there are five points between us and 11th- which is two wins if we can put that run together and keep this consistency and belief."The big thing is that we can’t look past each game. We’ve got to respect each game.
"Every game in this division is tough.
"When you get to this point in the season, the sides that are at the bottom of the division are desperate to get results. They become difficult games and the sides at the bottom will start beating people.
"We’ve just got to make sure that we concentrate on us, take each game as it comes and try and take something out of each game."
United have reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation in recent weeks, a system which has brought improved results and helped bring the best out of a number of players who had found themselves out of the side.
The head coach said: "We’ve got different variations to what we do. I think we’ve got options now to how we play,
"There might be changes; we might go a bit differently.
"We’ve got to bear in mind as well we’ve got some tough games coming up, but we can’t look past this next game.
"This is the most important game and we want to try and get three points in this. If we can’t get three points then we need to make sure we don’t get beat.
"We’ve gone with that mentality now for the last four or five games and we’ve picked up results."
