Sheffield Wednesday will be under increasing pressure if they fail to get a result against Leeds United this Friday in the Championship.
The Owls currently sit in the bottom three of the league table after taking just eight points from 10 matches this season but manager Dave Jones could witness a turnaround if his men overcome Neil Warnock's Leeds side.
The Whites can move into the playoff places if they snatch three points at the Hillsborough stadium on Friday as they hope to build on their five-match unbeaten run.
Jones is likely to opt for Chris O'Grady and loanee Jay Bothroyd up front, while Warnock is expected to choose Luciano Becchio and El-Hadj Diouf to lead the line.

Leeds visit to Hillsborough guaranteed to put big smile on Warnock’s face Published on Wednesday 17 October 2012 09:34
Neil Warnock takes Leeds to Sheffield Wednesday this Friday for a Championship derby. Richard Sutcliffe reports.KNOWING full well that his reception on Friday night will be neither particularly welcoming nor warm, Neil Warnock could be forgiven for regarding Hillsborough as his least favourite ground in the country.
The reality, however, could not be more different with the Leeds United manager admitting he eagerly looks forward to visiting the home of Sheffield Wednesday.
“I’ve always liked Hillsborough,†insists the 63-year-old lifelong Sheffield United fan to the Yorkshire Post ahead of this week’s first derby between Leeds and the Owls since 2007.
“It is a proper old ground and the crowd is always vociferous, especially when I’m there it seems.
“I always get the same reception whenever I go back. It hasn’t changed in who knows how long. I am sure they will be chanting my name from kick-off on Friday. And not in a nice way, either.
“But I am used to it now. I’ve had stick at quite a few grounds down the years. Elland Road always used to be one of the worst, to be fair. I got dog’s abuse there. But, again, it never bothered me.
“Anyway, nowadays I just wave back when the opposition fans start. I’ll be the same this weekend, though with there being a few Sheffield United links, lads such as Michael Tonge and Michael Brown, then maybe the abuse will be shared around.â€
Warnock is right. He will not be the only one on the end of vitriol from the Wednesday supporters. This is the visit of Leeds, after all. But it is surely stretching things to believe that the United chief won’t be the one who comes in for the most stick.
Not, of course, that it will bother him. In the past, he has even turned the tables on his tormentors – famously phoning up BBC Radio Sheffield’s post-match phone-in after he had been on the receiving end of some verbals from the visiting seats when his Crystal Palace side had hosted the Owls.
That he rang in as ‘Neil from London’ and only revealed his true identity once on air added to the hilarity of the episode.
What those Wednesday fans at Selhurst Park chanting about Warnock that afternoon probably did not know, though, was that as a youngster he had been a reasonably regular visitor to Hillsborough.
He recalls: “I’ve always supported United. It was something about liking the underdog. My dad was a United fan, too. Though he didn’t apply any pressure or anything like that. I just made my own mind up.
“Me and my dad may have been United but my elder sister was a Wednesdayite, I also used to go to games there. I was there for the first floodlit game at Hillsborough.
“I was also there when Santos came to Sheffield and Pele was in the team. What a game that was.
“I used to like a couple of Wednesday players.
“There was a full-back called Norman Curtis who I liked, along with a winger called Colin Dobson. Great players. I also went to watch United as a fan at Hillsborough.
“Back in those days, you could stand on the Kop as a United fan with no problems.
“You wouldn’t be able to do that now, which to me is a real shame.â€
As a dyed-in-the-wool Blade, Warnock understandably relished the Steel City derby tussles during his eight-year spell in charge at Bramall Lane.
He had a decent record, too, with just one defeat – a 2-0 loss in September, 2002 – in eight league encounters.
“We did well against Wednesday when I was manager,†says the 63-year-old. “But what pleased me the most is what happened during my whole time at United.
“The big target (when appointed in December 1999) was to make us the best team in Sheffield with the best stadium. I also wanted us to have the best training ground and the best Academy.
“I remember saying all this to Kevin McCabe and the rest of the board at the time. I think they thought I’d been drinking.
“It was probably understandable as Wednesday were in the Premier League when I got the job and the crowd the week before I came in at Bramall Lane for the visit from Port Vale had been around 8,900.
“But, in the end, we did it. We went from there to going past Wednesday, developing Bramall Lane and filling it every week.â€
On being in the away dugout at Hillsborough for the Steel City derbies, Warnock added: “We lost on my first visit, which was in the League Cup. We battered them as well.
“It was the Cup, so didn’t bother me too much. The league is always the bread and butter. And I had good record against Wednesday with United.
“The thing I do remember from going to Hillsborough was that bloody band playing. I’m not a fan. I just wish they’d learn a few more songs as they just seem to play the same one all the time.
“Saying that, there was one game when we won and I was tapping my toes along with the music. I must have been happy at how well we were doing.â€
As was to be expected of any Blade, Wednesday’s promotion at the expense of United last May came as a bitter blow to Warnock.
The subsequent loss to Huddersfield Town in the play-off final then meant the Steel City derby is off the menu for at least a year. The upshot is the derby clashes with Leeds being arguably the outstanding fixture of this season’s calendar for both clubs.
Warnock said: “I am looking forward to Friday. I like Milan (Mandaric) and Dave (Jones). They have done a great job in getting Wednesday up.
“I know things have not gone too well lately but it’ll turn round. A team always has to adjust when they go up a division. It takes time but Wednesday will get there. Anyone can beat anyone else in this division and Wednesday under a manager as experienced as Dave Jones will soon start getting the points together.â€
