LUFC FAI Chief - McDermott a serious contender Leeds United boss Brian McDermott is an early contender for the vacant Republic of Ireland job.
Ireland sacked Giovanni Trapattoni after losing to Austria on Tuesday night, leaving them with an almost impossible task of qualifying for the World Cup Finals in Brazil in 2014.
Martin O`Neill is the early favourite for the post with McDermott third favourite behind O`Neill and Mick McCarthy.
FAI chief John Delaney says McDermott is definitely someone in the running for the job. Speaking on Radio Leeds, Delaney said, "He is a serious candidate and he is one of the names being mentioned here this morning.
"I am looking at the names being mentioned and I think it will come down to the three leading the market.
"I am looking at Mick McCarthy and Brian McDermott and I know that both men, having spoken to them over the past couple of years, they would both like to get their hands on this job, not necessarily at this stage.
"I know Brian McDermott, given his heritage with his parents being Irish, and having spoken to him on Irish radio, he would love to manage the Republic of Ireland someday."
McDermott led Reading to the championship in his first managerial role and he was unfortunate to be sacked by the Berkshire club just weeks after being named Premier League Manager of the Month.
He arrived at Leeds in April and he helped the club pull away from the relegation zone with three wins in five games.
This season, Leeds have made a decent start with eight points from their opening five games.
