Leeds United striker opens up over struggles during loan spell

Date published: Monday 15th October 2018 12:52

A Leeds United striker has vowed to fight for his place within the first team after a troublesome time so far out on loan.

Caleb Ekuban didn’t exactly have the debut season he would of envisioned when he first arrived at Elland Road, making 20 appearances in the league, scoring just once.

Things don’t seem to have fared much easier for the 24-year-old while out on-loan, having featured just once for Trabzonspor since his summer move.

The attacker has played just 24 minutes in the Turkish Super Lig this year, and it was a memorable debut, scoring in a 4-0 win over Champions Galatasaray. Ekuban’s emphatic cameo did more to please fans back in Yorkshire than any of his contributions last year, with the bad blood between Leeds and the Istanbul side firmly resonating.

Despite his lack of playing time, Ekuban remains optimistic: “I fell behind Burak [Yilmaz] and [Hugo] Rodallega in the pecking order but will not run from the battle. I will fight for my place in the team,” he told TurkishFootball.

Går dårlig for Caleb i Tyrkia. Forventes å returnere til Leeds til sommeren.

Hope in the hanging snore for Ekuban?

I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

Report: Trabzonspor to take up permanent option for Leeds' Caleb Ekuban

Shane Callaghan1 day ago
Trabzonspor will reportedly sign Leeds United's Caleb Ekuban before the season finishes.

Turkish outlet Fotomac have reported that Trabzonspor will sign Leeds United attacker Caleb Ekuban on a permanent basis before the end of the season.

The Italian striker has been on loan with the Turkish side since last summer and has recently come into a bit of form, netting three times in his last seven games.

And according to Fotomac, they will take up their option to sign the Leeds player in the long term, for a fee of around €1 million - or £878,000.

The writing has been on the wall for Ekuban since Marcelo Bielsa deemed his surplus to requirements last summer and getting rid is the best scenario for all parties - something that the former Chievo Verona star agrees with.

Last month, the 24-year-old admitted that he wanted to stay in Turkey beyond the end of his loan agreement [Haber61] and, if rumours are believed, that looks like it'll materialise.

Ekuban, contracted to the Elland Road side until 2021, scored only twice in 21 appearances across all competitions in his debut season for Leeds last season.

Leeds United player receiving ‘great’ interest from Italian clubs

Sport Witness3rd April 2019
 By Clever Advertising

There’s a claim in the Turkish media that Leeds United loanee Caleb Ekuban is receiving ‘great’ interest from Italy.

The 25 year old spent seven years at Chievo Verona before his move to Leeds in 2017, but he could be set for a return to his country of birth.

Fanatik today report on the latest developments regarding the future of Ekuban following claims earlier this week Trabzonspor are ready to cash in on the forward once they purchase him outright from Leeds United.

Ekuban has been on loan with the Super Lig club since last summer and they can redeem the player for €1m at the end of the season. However, due to the reported interest from other clubs Trabzonspor could be looking to offload him for €10m, making a big and quick profit.

There had been reports in Turkey of interest from elsewhere, without any further details, and it’s now seems this was from Italy, although the clubs are still unnamed.

The Ghana international is contracted to Leeds United until June 2021 but it looks like his time with the Elland Road club is coming to an end.

Caleb Ekuban is set to complete a £2m move from Leeds United to Trabzonspor after the Turkish club announced that they will exercise an option to keep him permanently.

Trabzonspor are moving to finalise the terms of a full-time switch from Elland Road having been impressed by Ekuban during his season-long loan in Turkey. The striker was surplus to requirements under Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa last summer and moved to Trabzonspor before the start of the Championship term.

The Ghanaian cost Leeds £500,000 from Chievo in the summer of 2016 but scored only twice in 22 appearances during his first year in England.

He has struck five times for Trabzonspor and played regularly in Turkey’s Super Lig, helping the club to fourth place and the brink of Europa League qualification.

Trabzonspor are expected to pay around £2m up front for Ekuban in a deal which includes add-ons. He is two years into a four-year contract at Leeds.
