NEI FRA PENNENT!

JERMAINE PENNANT is the latest big-name star to snub West Ham as frustrated shopaholic Alan Curbishley suffers a nightmare at the January sales.

The new Hammers boss made an enquiry to Liverpool chief Rafa Benitez for the former England Under-21 winger with a view to a £7million bid.

But the Reds knocked back Curbishley’s interest and Pennant is also said to be determined to make an impact at Liverpool after a disappointing start to his Anfield career.

Pennant joins Shaun Wright-Phillips, Freddie Ljungberg, Ashley Young, Scott Parker and Joey Barton among the long list of failed bids by Curbishley.

MACCA

GARY McALLISTER is ready for a Coventry return â€" three years after being tragically forced to quit as player-manager writes CHRIS MOORE.

The ex-Scotland skipper, 42, is favourite to succeed Micky Adams, who was sacked this week after the Sky Blues’ 2-0 FA Cup defeat by Bristol City.

McAllister resigned in January 2004 to care for his wife Denise, who lost her six-year battle against cancer in March last year.

A pal of McAllister’s said: “Gary is ready to return to the game and is therefore open to offers.”

Endelig bekreftet i dag:

POTTERS SIGN PREMIERSHIP DUO
Stoke boss Tony Pulis has signed defenders Dominic Matteo and Andy Griffin in time for the clash with Preston at Deepdale.

Matteo has joined on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season.

Griffin has arrived on loan from Portsmouth until the end of the season with the view to a permanent move.

Matteo told the club's official website: "I am not saying I am going to come here and go straight into the team, but hopefully I will show everybody what I can do.

"I have not played much football for the last 12 months, but I am here now and I want to change that.

"I have not played any first-team matches but I have played in lots of reserve games and my fitness is fine, so I am ready if the manager calls on me but it will take maybe a week or two to get match fit."

Ex-players i "SKY's Best of the Weekend"

Goal of the Day:  Jermaine Pennant
The winger has largely struggled to shine since his summer move to Anfield, but Pennant popped up with his first goal for Liverpool at the perfect time. With The Reds already 1-0 up at home to Chelsea, Pennant took stock on the edge of the box and fired a dipping effort over the hapless Petr Cech.

Save of the Day:  Paul Robinson
Robinson proved just why he is England's number one with a super stop to deny Fulham's Brian McBride at Craven Cottage. The Tottenham Hotspur keeper showed accute reactions to block a close-range shot from the American striker.

Controversy of the Day: James Milner's goal
With Newcastle 2-0 down at home to West Ham United, Milner gave them a foothold in the tie with a goal on the stroke of half-time. However The Hammers were infuriated with referee Uriah Rennie, who decided that the goal should stand despite the shot passing through Scott Parker's legs who was clearly in an offside position.

Kewell closing on return

Liverpool star Harry Kewell believes he is finally close to making a return to action.

Kewell has not featured this season after picking up groin and foot injuries during Australia's World Cup campaign.

The former Leeds man underwent surgery at the back end of last year and Kewell was able to start running earlier this week.

Kewell is now hoping to be back to full fitness in a month and is targeting a return to action in the UEFA Champions League against Barcelona.

"I started running on Tuesday for the first time since the World Cup, so that was amazing," Kewell told the Sydney Herald Sun.

"Just getting to this stage is a major relief and a weight off my mind.

"I think the desperation to play gets cranked up a little now that I am back here at Liverpool.

"I know I am getting closer, but I'm so keen to get back into it now that it can't come quickly enough for me.

"This is the frustrating stage, when it's close enough that you start to get your hopes up. It is gutting seeing the boys play and knowing you can't be part of it - just yet.

"I hope I'm about three or four weeks away from being fully fit.

"I've been back in England since the middle of November.

"The lads are great here. They're always asking when I'm going to be ready and how I'm going, but you can't really feel part of it unless you're getting your shirt dirty with them."

Renaissance man yearns for big time

It has been a long and winding road, with detours via Barcelona, Barnsley and the Bronx, but the man once compared to Liam Brady believes he is finally approaching the end-game. Remember Stephen McPhail? He had it all. Hailed as the most naturally gifted of a Leeds United team that made the Uefa Cup semi-finals, the future seemed bright, but then the chairman starting renting goldfish, the dream imploded and the new poet of the left foot was sent off on his loan debut for Millwall.

It has taken five years for the Irishman to rediscover the lustrous talent and spearhead Cardiff City’s staccato assault on the Barclays Premiership. In the interim, Leeds have entered a seemingly inexorable decline, while Peter Ridsdale, the former chairman, has fronted a takeover at Ninian Park.

“I look back and it’s all a bit of a daze,” McPhail said. “It knocks your confidence when you drop down a level, but you have to learn quick. It’s made me stronger to see how the other half live. At Barnsley, there were a lot of young lads who were on a pittance scrapping to get into the team, and it made me realise that there’s a lot more to football than just playing for a big club.”

McPhail spent two years at Barnsley after brief loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Millwall. Barely a year after playing a Champions League match in the Nou Camp, he was taking on Gillingham. It was a decline that might have crushed lesser men, but McPhail always had a sharper perspective than many of his peers.

“When I was a kid, we went to live in the Bronx for three years,” he said. “My dad was a carpenter and there was a big job out there. It was strange going from a nice seaside town in Dublin to a place where you weren’t allowed outside the school doors. We were right beside the hospital and it was mayhem, noise going on through the night. It was a different world and it opened my eyes. You couldn’t play football in the streets there, but my mam would take us to the park and I never let go of that.”

When the family returned home, McPhail became close friends with Robbie Keane. Even now he seems baffled that Leeds could allow Keane to leave as a youth and then spend £12 million on him, but McPhail’s own progress was swift. George Graham mentioned him in the same breath as Brady and Paul Hart, the then youth team coach, said he treated the ball like gold-dust. Even as recently as May 2004, he was still playing for Leeds, but by then both player and club were on the way down.

“I’ve tried to erase it,” he said of the Leeds years. “I didn’t play for a year and a half through injury and there was a new manager every three months. It was one in, one out and it wasn’t working for me. I could easily have stayed because I had two years left, but I wanted out. It was hard because I’d been there for a decade, but I’d recommend dropping down a level to anyone. It’s good for your character to see people who are really dedicated because they need to make a living.”

McPhail, 27 and celebrating the birth of his first child, is content even though Cardiff’s early-season promise has faded and the 4-0 FA Cup drubbing by Keane and Tottenham Hotspur marked 13 games without a win.

McPhail insists the future is bright and is happy to defend Ridsdale. “Peter is a top man,” McPhail said. “He’s a really nice bloke who loves his football. People criticise him for what happened at Leeds, but he was one bloke answering for a lot of others. Look at what that team achieved. People are fickle.”

Cardiff’s recent poor run, brought to an end with victory at Molineux on Saturday, has not dimmed McPhail’s optimism and the Premiership remains an obsession. “Once you’ve tasted it you want more,” he said. “I want to get up and show I can still do it at that level.”

The youngster from Tallaght, a tough south Dublin suburb, began his career at Crumlin United before moving to England with Wolverhampton Wanderers where he quickly made his mark, scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Norwich City on the opening day of the 1997/98 season.

Liverpool's Fowler eyes MLS

Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler is eyeing a move to MLS.
With Becks-mania hitting the US many of LA Galaxy's rivals are looking to recruit high-profile European stars to exploit the new popularity of football in the States.

Fowler, who's still only 31, has been told he will not be getting a new contract at Anfield next summer.

The former England star was considering quitting football if he couldn't clinch a new deal at his beloved Anfield. But the lure of spending a couple of years in the US may prove irresistible.

WOLVES CLOSE ON KEOGH DEAL

Wolves are set to sign Scunthorpe striker Andy Keogh after the two clubs agreed a fee that could rise to £850,000.

The 20-year-old was undergoing a medical on Monday afternoon ahead of signing a three-year deal.

The Coca-Cola Championship club have agreed an initial £600,000 fee with Scunthorpe to make the Ireland Under-21 international their sixth signing of the transfer window. Confirmation is expected to come on Tuesday.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: "Andy is a player we have been trying to sign for the manager for some time.

"We finally reached an agreement with Scunthorpe and - subject to a satisfactory medical - he will become our player and begin training in the morning.

"This is an exciting signing for us as, at 20 years old, he is a player with bags of potential."

Wolves previously tried to sign Keogh as a youth trainee but he opted instead for Leeds, whom he left for Scunthorpe in January 2005.

Keogh has scored seven goals in 32 appearances this season.

Arsenal and Chelsea to battle for Woodgate

According to reports, Jonathan Woodgate will not be at Middlesbrough Football Club for long.

The England international is on a season-long loan deal at the Riverside Stadium from Real Madrid, and whilst there is no question of him quitting Teesside this month, it remains a huge doubt if he will sign a permanent deal.

Reports have linked both Arsenal and Chelsea with the classy centre-half, and ‘Boro manager Gareth Southgate admits Woodgate should only stay with his hometown club if he is committed to the cause.

"If he decides he doesn't want to stay at Real Madrid or come to us, then he could still go somewhere else. That is his choice,” Southgate said when asked about the defender’s future.

BAKKE MÃ... OPERERES

GARY RECALLS MISS-ERY AT THAT PENALTY

SCOTLAND hero Gary McAllister has spoken for the first time about the heartache of his penalty miss against England at Euro 96.
The ball moved just before McAllister went to take his kick - which was saved by David Seaman - and he admitted he blasted the ball instead of placing it to one side because he feared falling over.
Psychic Uri Geller later claimed he had used his powers to make the ball move before the Scotland midfielder took aim and the incident has gone down as one of the most notorious moments in Scottish sporting history.
England were 1-0 up at the time and less than two minutes later Paul Gascoigne produced a piece of skill to clinch the winner for England and Scotland stared at glorious failure at a major finals yet again.
Speaking in the first of a new BBC series of That Was The Team That Was: Scotland Euro 96, McAllister said: "I've never really spoken about this.
"I went up with my left foot, to strike it with my right foot, and it was a surreal moment.
"As you can imagine I'm committed to strike and the ball half turns.
"It was one of the few penalties I had ever just blasted because I feared I would just fall over the ball.
"Seaman got lucky. He dived the wrong way and it hit his elbow. Scotland teams have been unlucky in the past but I thought particularly at Euro 96 we were only inches away."
Craig Brown, McAllister's boss that day, admitted he felt as though he had been hit when Seaman saved.
He said: "It was like somebody had just punched me in the solar plexus.
"Gazza was due to come off but he scored a great goal to clinch the match. Sometimes fate just goes against you."
Defender Colin Calderwood, now manager of Nottingham Forest, told the programme how McAllister was inconsolable after the game.
He said: "It was a sombre, sombre bus. But I especially remember Gary just sitting on his own and I've never seen anyone look so grey in my life. He was absolutely devastated."
Former captain Colin Hendry recalled how the Tartan Army managed to create an unbelievable noise to roar the Scots on.
He said: "As you walked out to all the Scotland flags the atmosphere was amazing.
"They were always going to be in the minority but they'd always out-sing the English supporters.
"We were always going to win that battle."
Scots fans supported England in their final group match against Holland.
A big win for the English together with a Scotland victory over Switzerland would have taken Brown's side through to the second phase. Ally McCoist scored to secure a win for the Scots but Holland's late goal in their 4-1 defeat denied them their moment of glory.
Scotland defender Tom Boyd recalled: "If the ref had blown the final whistle before that Holland goal we were through but then that was it - another glorious failure for us in a major finals."

That Was The Team That Was: Scotland Euro 96 will be broadcast on BBC1 Scotland on Friday at 10.35pm.
