VIDUKA KEY ROLE IN UGO'S MOVE

FORMER Celtic star Mark Viduka played a key role in talking best mate Ugo Ehiogu into joining Rangers.

The former Celtic striker spoke exclusively to Record Sport last night, hours after the defender had completed his first training session with Walter Smith's squad.
The 34-year-old should have his move from Middlesbrough rubber stamped today and is expected to make his debut in Saturday's crunch against Hearts.
And Viduka is tipping the veteran defender to become an instant hit with the Rangers fans - after advising his old pal to jump at the chance of moving to Ibrox.
He said: "Ugo and I are really good mates. We were actually next door neighbours for a while when we lived in Wetherby. He first told me he had a chance to go Rangers after they made initial contact. He was really excited and I told him to go for it.
"I said it would be a great move and that Rangers are a massive club with a great support and fans all over the world.
"I also told him he would love Glasgow because it's a great place to stay. I had a fantastic time there and, to be honest, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
"I know I played on the other side of the city so my feelings will always be with the Hoops.
"But Rangers are a massive, massive club and I'm delighted for my pal.
"This is the kind of move which will get him going. He'll be playing in the latter stages of the UEFA Cup this season and most likely the Champions League next season. That's a huge attraction for any player."
Viduka left Parkhead for Leeds United in the summer of 2000 before moving on to the Riverside four years later.
But he retains more than a passing interest in the Scottish game and feels Rangers have not boasted a defender with Ehiogu's physical presence since they sold off his old nemesis, Lorenzo Amoruso.
Viduka said: "Some say Ugo has never realised his full potential.I don't know the background as I was not playing in England when he broke through.
All I can tell you is I've played against him and beside him and I rate him.
"He's very strong. He's afit lad who is excellent in the air. He strikes me as being exactly what Rangers need.
"They haven't had a real presence in the heart of their defence since big Lorenzo - I'll never forget the battles the two of us used to have in Old Firm games.
"But that's what Ugo will give them. He's an excellent pro and a top bloke.
"He's a very strong person, mentally and physically, so I don't see a problem for him adapting to the goldfish bowl of Glasgow.
"He's had injury problems over the last couple of years and hasn't had a great deal of good luck but this is exactly what he needs to get his career back on track.
"At 34 you can slip away into the background or, if you're lucky, get the chance to do something like this and get the fire back in your belly. This is the kind of move you can only dream about."
Rangers assistant boss Ally McCoist claims Ehiogu did enough in his first training session to push his case for a debut against Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday.
He said: "I enjoyed playing with him in his first training session.
"He is looking good and is keen as mustard.
"It's a bit early to talk about team selection but I would imagine the big man will come in at some point and be involved at the weekend."

FA FINE HASSELBAINK

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been fined by the Football Association after being found guilty of improper conduct and bringing the game into disrepute.

The Charlton striker was docked £5,000 and warned about his future conduct over claims made in his autobiography about former club Chelsea.

The Dutchman accused the Stamford Bridge club of making illegal payments to players in his book, which was also serialised in a national newspaper.

The FA released a statement, which read: "He said in his book that Chelsea had paid an additional bonus to the players following the Champions League quarter-final victory over Arsenal in April 2004.

Harte relieved to return

Republic of Ireland defender Ian Harte has spoken of his delight at finally returning to action after injury.

The Levante defender made his first appearance of the season in last weekend's draw with Athletic Bilbao.

Harte has been troubled by an ankle problem for some time and was forced to undergo an operation on it.

The former Leeds man admitted he feared he might never return from his ankle problem because of the complications of the injury.

"The cyst that I had in my ankle was difficult to remove, but luckily everything has gone well and I have recovered," Harte told Marca.

"I was scared I would not return, but I was in good hands."

Harte was frozen out of things under former coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro, but he is now back in favour with Caro's replacement Abel Resino.

"It is normal that you are not counted on after a long injury," added Harte.

"In addition, it was complicated to get my place back off (Luis Manuel) Rubiales and I need more time and competitive matches to get back to 100 per cent."

http://darlington.rivals.net/default.asp?sid=955&p=28stid=8436382

Mange tabber, men fortsatt England No. 1

"Wednesday night saw a very, very poor decision from Paul Robinson, and it's by no means his first mistake of the season. But if you're asking whether he should still be England's number one, I'd have to say yes."

EX-PLAYER PLUKK 26/1

England will recall Jonathan Woodgate for the February 7 friendly with Spain. (The Telegraph)

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona is certain the Old Trafford side will win the Premiership this season.
"For sure they will be champions," Cantona told the BBC's North West Tonight programme.  "It's a new era, a new generation. They have a great team but they have a lot to prove. They need to do it.

Liverpool's forgotten man Harry Kewell is hoping to play in the club's upcoming UEFA Champions League games with Barcelona. The Australian international has been on the sidelines for the whole of the season after picking up groin and foot injuries in last summer's World Cup. Kewell recently returned to training and has admitted he would be lying if he did not have one eye on the club's mouth-watering ties with Barca. Liverpool travel to Camp Nou on February 21 and the ex-Leeds man is keen to help The Reds stay in Europe following their recent FA and Carling Cup disappointment.

Wigan closing in on £600K League One hotshot

Chesterfield striker Caleb Folan looks to be on his way to the JJB Stadium. The 24-year-old former Leeds United trainee has netted 12 times this season, including strikes against Manchester City, West Ham and Charlton in the League Cup.

BEKREFTET: CALEB COUP FOR LATICS

Wigan have signed Chesterfield striker Caleb Folan for £500,000.

Former Leeds trainee Folan has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, keeping him at the JJB Stadium until 2010.

Folan, 24, has scored eight goals in 19 Coca-Cola League One games this season and becomes Paul Jewell's fourth recruit this month.

Jewell said: "I've watched the lad twice in person while the club has also scouted him on a number of other occasions, and I think he's got what it takes to play at the top level.

"He's strong, he's aggressive, he's got a finisher's instinct and I think he will add competition in an area where the squad needs bolstering.

"I've always maintained I will never buy a player unless I think he can add something to my squad, and Caleb is no different.

"I think the lad's got it, simple as that."

Folan, who has also played for Rushden and Diamonds and Hull, said: "Every player dreams of being in the Premiership and, although it's difficult for me to leave Chesterfield because the club has been so good to me, this is an amazing opportunity and I want to repay the faith that Paul Jewell has shown by proving that I am good enough to play in the Premiership.

"There are some great players at this club and I cannot fail to improve by being here. Now, I just want to meet the lads, start training and start fighting for my place."

Jager fortsatt Alan Smith

Villa move for Man Utd's Smith
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is moving for Manchester United striker Alan Smith.
The Mirror says O'Neill is keen to take Smith on loan - with a view to a full-time move - and hopes that Sir Alex Ferguson will allow him to leave Old Trafford where he is out in the cold.
The Villa boss is hoping Smith, who turned down loan moves to Cardiff and Wigan, will jump at the chance of moving to the Midlands.
The former England striker has been struggling for form and confidence since his horror leg break and Ferguson is prepared to let him get some games - and may even sell if it suits all parties.
Smith snubbed Wigan recently and claimed that he wanted to fight for his first-team place, but Villa are a bigger club and that may appeal to him as he knows his United chances are slim.

"Following an approach made this morning by St Johnstone, the paper work has been completed to allow striker Derek Lilley to leave Morton and join Owen Coyles side.
Manager Jim McInally said "I understand his frustration at not starting games in recent times, and I can also understand his need to play regular first team football at this stage of his career, so when the approach was received, I didn't want to stand in his way. I would like to wish him well as he has been a great part of our squad."
Everyone connected with the Club would also like to pass on their best wishes to Derek for the future.

SAINTS SIGN EXPERIENCED STRIKER
Saints have this afternoon swooped to secure the signature of experienced striker Derek Lilley.
The 32 year old former Morton man trained at the stadium  this morning and has completed the move this afternoon following the cancellation of his contract with the Greenock Club.
Lilley has made over 550 senior appearances in a career which has also taken him to Oxford United, Hearts, Leeds United, Livingston and Dundee United.
Manager Owen Coyle says of the signing, “I was after Derek when I first joined Saints but he opted to go back to Morton from Livingston. However I’m delighted to have him here now at an important time for us and he is in the squad for tomorrow.
“I think he is a different type of striker from what we have at the moment, more physical and robust and he will give us a different dimension.”

i den opprinnelige kontrakten var det en slik clause (som ga Leeds uvanlig mye kick-back på alt over salgssummen £500.000 - tror det var 50/50-deling mellom de to klubbene), men Spurs kjøpte ut denne for 'småpenger' (uklart hvor mye, men £150.000 er tidligere nevt) sist sommer.

Duberry interests Reading - Pulis

Reading have made an inquiry about Stoke defender Michael Duberry, according to Potters boss Tony Pulis.
The 31-year-old has been a key part of a Stoke defence that has conceded only 25 goals in the Championship all season but is out of contract in the summer.

"Reading have inquired about him. That is as far as it's gone," said Pulis.

"We inquire about 30 players a day but getting things done is different. At the moment it's all ifs, buts and maybes so we will see what happens."

Pulis may choose to cash in on the former Leeds and Chelsea man before his contract runs out.

"He is still a Stoke player at this moment in time so he will be out doing his best for the club against Ipswich on Tuesday," he said.

Newcastle boss: Villa shambles inspired Milner

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder believes James Milner is using last August's transfer deadline day shambles as inspiration this season.

In a shambolic final day of wheeling and dealing in August, Milner was told to pack his bags for Villa again, just months after completing an impressive loan spell at Villa Park, while Newcastle waited for Middlesbrough to release Mark Viduka. Neither deal went through.

Roeder said: "When James looks back on his career, he will look at the day he went down to Aston Villa to sign and came back hugely disappointed as a turning point.

"He was at a crossroads because it was such a disappointment for him at the time. You wonder how he is going to handle it. He could lie down and cry about it or stand up and fight for his position. I would say he will look back and feel he actually became a man.

"It's where he showed maturity. The easiest thing for James would have been to come back and sulk but he didn't, he carried on training as hard as anyone I've ever known and the three goals he scored recently were not from good luck but from sheer hard work."
