Manchester City defender Danny Mills has become the second former Middlesbrough player to accuse England manager Steve McClaren of being "false".

Massimo Maccarone, who left Boro to join Italian outfit Siena on a free transfer this week, was scathing about McClaren's stint at the Riverside.

And Mills backed the comments by Maccarone who referred to his former boss as "Steve 'the magnificent' McClaren".

Mills played under McClaren while on loan from Leeds in 2003/04 and he told Radio Five Live: "You can see where Massimo was coming from. He [McClaren] did like the phrase 'magnificent' and it often was a false smile Steve McClaren would hide behind.

"Some of his comments about McClaren are difficult to disagree with - two-faced and that sort of stuff, I experienced some of that myself.

"Three days before the end of the [2003/04] season Steve McClaren pulled me in and said, 'I want you here, you're part of my plans.'

"I already knew he was looking at other right-backs. He said he would call me, but he went away with England to the European Championships, I didn't.

"The phonecall came about three months later when I signed for Manchester City.

"It's difficult. Steve McClaren, for what he is, is a very, very good coach but for me his man management skills at times were very, very poor."

Mills does not expect any of the current England players to comment on the criticisms in case they lose their place in the squad.

"Any personal attack on the manager and you're not going to play," he said.

"You don't know how long McClaren is going to be in the job so it's very difficult."

Ex-Leeds star makes charity gesture

Former Leeds United, Coventry and Liverpool star Gary McAllister has made a donation of St£2,500 to the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre in Drogheda.

McAllister instructed Irish bookmaking firm Boylesports to donate the sum of money â€" which he was owed for publicity work â€" to the cancer centre.

Ann Tracey, of the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre, told the Drogheda Independent: “He rang them up and told them that he would like the money to go to his old friend Gary’s cancer charity in Drogheda, so we are delighted to accept the cheque from Boylesports.”

McAllister, a teammate of Kelly during Leeds’ days as one of the Premiership’s top sides in the 1990s, lost his wife, Denise, to the disease last year.

McCLAREN WELCOMES WOODY BACK

Jonathan Woodgate's wilderness years will finally reach their conclusion at Old Trafford on Wednesday with England coach Steve McClaren keeping his fingers firmly crossed that the Middlesbrough man's injury jinx does not strike again.

Three long years since he won his fifth England cap, Woodgate has finally overcome career-threatening groin and back problems and is ready resume his international career and try to fulfil the potential everyone knew he possessed during his early days at Leeds.

Rio Ferdinand was his partner in those distant days at Elland Road. And ironically, with skipper John Terry expecting to be nothing more than chief supporter given the concerns over his fitness, it will be Ferdinand who partners Woodgate in the friendly against Spain this week.

"Jonathan Woodgate has a very good chance of playing," said McClaren.

"There are some players you bring into a squad because you want to see them train and others because you want to see them play. Jonathan falls into the latter category.

"He has a proven pedigree at international level and I wanted to get him involved again and after three years in the wilderness, I am delighted to have him back."

It is a measure of how much time has passed since Woodgate last turned out for his country that Darius Vassell, Emile Heskey and David Thompson were all team-mates in a 1-0 defeat by Sweden in Gothenburg.

Since then, Woodgate's career has taken him to Newcastle, Real Madrid and now McClaren's former club Middlesbrough where, under the guidance of Gareth Southgate, the 27-year-old has prospered.

"It was a great decision of Jonathan's to come back to the Premiership and join Middlesbrough," said McClaren.

"He offers us something different because he can bring the ball out of defence and create, which is what you need at international level."

Amazingly, Woodgate's exile is not the longest among the 28-man group McClaren announced on Friday.

Jol backs Robbo to come good

Tottenham boss Martin Jol has revealed under-fire Paul Robinson has sacrificed his days off in order to improve his game.
Robinson has been criticised in some quarters this season following some less than convincing performances for club and country.
It is in sharp contrast to last season's form when Robinson was widely recognised as one of the Premiership's best goalkeepers.
Robinson's standards have dipped slightly this term, but Jol has backed the England international's hard work to pay off in the long run.
"He is coming in to work on his day off and that is the difference," said Jol.
"With the number of games we have had, we don't have many of those. I think he is a top sportsman."

Viduka still in dark over future

Mark Viduka admits his future at Middlesbrough is still far from clear as he enters the final months of his contract at The Riverside.

The North East club insisted that talks over a new deal would commence after the end of the January transfer window, but five days later the striker is still no closer to knowing whether he will stay at the club.

Whilst the Australian international is more than prepared to study any deal that may be offered by Boro, the 31-year-old would also be content to become a free agent at the end of the campaign.

"I'm happy to stay at Middlesbrough,'' Viduka said.

"I'm not going to put a gun to anybody's head to offer me a new deal.

"But at the end of the season, for myself, I'll be a free agent and I haven't been free since 1995 so maybe it'll be a good thing.

"I'll have to see, if there's an offer made, I'll have to consider it.

"If not, there's four more months to the end of the season and I want to do my best for the club and for myself.

"I think now we're starting to get into a good patch of form and hopefully we can continue that as a team and hopefully I can continue playing well.''

Viduka has been linked with a return home to join the flourishing A-League, and when queried on his plans the striker refused to rule out a move to Australia.

"I'm not saying that I am 100 per cent going back to Australia,'' Viduka added.

"But ... for us players that have been away from home for so long and having to come to Europe to earn a decent living out of football, to be able to come back home and play in that sort of a league in front of those sort of crowds is a big temptation.''

Woodgate denies Boro deal

Jonathan Woodgate was last night forced to deny he had agreed to join Middlesbrough from Real Madrid on a permanent basis.

Woodgate, preparing with the England squad for tomorrow's international, insisted he had not committed his long-term future to his hometown club after the Real website announced a deal had been struck and even wished him well for the future.

Peker nese til O'Leary

WILFRED BOUMA has accused former Aston Villa boss David O’Leary of leaving him to flounder.

The Dutch defender is back in the Holland squad thanks to his performances for new Villa manager Martin O’Neill.

And the £3.5million buy from PSV Eindhoven rapped: “I’ve learned more in six months under Martin O’Neill than in the whole year before.

"Neither the previous manager nor his coaches spoke to me when things weren’t going well.”

COMEBACK KID HARTE COUNTS BLESSINGS

Ian Harte returns to the international fold on Wednesday - having feared only months ago that his career was over.

Harte has missed the Republic of Ireland's last five matches but is back in the starting line-up for the Euro 2008 qualifier with San Marino at the Serravalle Stadium.

The 29-year-old has only just returned for Levante, following five months on the sidelines recovering from surgery to remove a cyst.

The situation was made worse by the fact the growth was on a nerve below his knee in his favoured left leg, and at the time there was only a 50-50 chance he would play again.

"When the doctors and neurosurgeons told me that, it was scary," said Harte.

"They told me they would only realise how things were after the operation, and whether I would be able to move my toes.

"At the time I did fear my career was over. I'm just glad I was in safe hands and that somebody was looking after me.

"Thank God it's all over now, and I can look forward to the future. I'm just glad I'm still able to play football."

Left-back Harte recently played 70 minutes against Athletic Bilbao and the full 90 minutes against Sevilla, setting up two goals.

Although dropped from the squad for Sunday's 1-0 win at Real Madrid, he is now happy to see out his contract following his much-publicised troubled times at Levante.

"I've 18 months left and I'm more settled now than I was last year," added Harte.

"I'm very happy, but you never know what can happen in football.

"I know I'll definitely go back to England to play one day, but we will have to wait and see what comes."

For now, Harte lines up against the minnows of San Marino with a determination to help Ireland continue to right the wrongs after a wretched start to their Group D campaign.

After beating San Marino 5-0 at Lansdowne Road last November, the expectation is another comfortable night for Steve Staunton's side.

"We know we've made things difficult for ourselves," said Harte.

"The (5-2) defeat in Cyprus was a bad one. But that's gone, and we have to look towards the future.

"It's up to us now, and I hope we can do it for 'Stan' to get the best results we can.

"He's taken a lot of stick, which has been unfair. You don't want to make excuses, but we have had injuries to many key players who are vital for the team.

"That has gone, and we can't change it. We have to look to the future and do what we can to try and get as many points as we can.

"First and foremost, tomorrow is a game we have to win - and with a professional performance."

Gray wants Rovers place back

Blackburn Rovers full-back Michael Gray is aiming to reclaim his place in Mark Hughes' side.

Gray has not featured for Rovers since the club's 6-2 thrashing by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium prior to Christmas.

Since then, Hughes has brought in Stephen Warnock to fill the left-back slot and it has led to suggestions Gray could move on.

The former England international attracted interest from other clubs during January's transfer window and could have more offers when the loan window reopens this week.

But, according to Rovers chairman John Williams, the 32-year-old is hoping to force his way back into Hughes' plans.

"There was interest in Michael in January, and if an opportunity comes along again during the loan period, we will put it to him," Williams told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

"But at the moment, Michael says he wants to stay and fight for his place at Rovers, and that's just what Mark Hughes wants to hear."
