ROEDER SALUTES MILNER'S DEDICATION

GLENN ROEDER has saluted the dedication of rejuventated Newcastle midfielder James Milner. The 21-year-old has been one of the few success stories of a lacklustre season, having narrowly missed out on an August move to Aston Villa.
Milner has established himself as Roeder's first-choice right midfielder, with Nobby Solano dropping back to right-back or (at Fulham last Saturday) the bench.
It is a dramatic transformation for a young man who believed he would not get many first-team opportunities at St James' this season - and his manager believes it is all down to hard work.
"I am very pleased, and he is entitled to be very pleased with himself. He works so hard.
"I worked at West Ham with Frank Lampard, and you know where he has gone on the world stage now.
"I never, ever remember Frank going in at the end of the main session - he always did at least 20 minutes' extra practice.
"Often it would be finishing, so when Frank knocks in 20-plus a season that's not luck; that's through sheer hard work.
"James does the same."
Milner has scored in his last four home games - and hopes to add another to that collection of stunning strikes when Liverpool come calling on Saturday afternoon.

Rio's the world's best - Ferguson
Rio Ferdinand makes his 200th Manchester United appearance on Saturday, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming he has fully justified his £29.1m fee.
At the time, it was a British-record sum - and even now has been eclipsed only by the £30million Chelsea splashed out on Andriy Shevchenko last summer.
After Ferdinand followed up some early inconsistency by landing himself with an eight-month ban for a missed drugs test, it appeared Ferguson had wasted his cash.
However, since Ferdinand completed his fateful suspension in September 2004, the 28-year-old has begun to fulfil his enormous potential - and is proving to be one of the cornerstones of United's drive for silverware on three fronts this season.
"It is hard to pick a better defender in the world than Rio," said Ferguson.
"When he came to us, he was a player of enormous potential. That was evident in everything you saw of him.
"He has always had fabulous technique, great pace and balance. He is two-footed and 6ft 3in, so he has everything you would wish for in a centre-half.
"But he also had moments when he was careless and he would give the opposition a chance, because he was so relaxed.
"Thankfully, his maturity has brought that edge to his game where he handles everything now."
Ferdinand has also benefited from the arrival of Nemanja Vidic.
In combining the Englishman's relaxed style and the harder edge of Vidic's defending, United now have a central defensive partnership to match the axis of Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister - upon whom so much of United's early success under the Scot was built.
"I am not sure whether Rio needed someone like Nemanja," reflected Ferguson.
"What he needed was someone to be there alongside him all the time, to get a longevity into a partnership.
"I will never forget Bruce and Pallister playing together for the first time. We lost at home to Norwich, and Pallister in particular was awful.
"But they ended up generating an understanding which helped them develop a fantastic partnership. I hope that is going to happen again."
London-born Ferdinand will never be an Old Trafford favourite in the same way as Wayne Rooney, or home-grown stars such as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs - particularly given the drawn-out contract saga which was only resolved 18 months ago.
However, now Ferdinand has been at United so long, Ferguson expects him to remain at the club for the best part of his career.
"When I paid that kind of money for Rio we were looking for a return in terms of getting 10 years' service out of him," said the manager.
"Well, he has been here five years now - and we are looking at 10 to 12 years in total.
"He is happy here and he is on a good contract. The longer he is here, the more it benefits us."

ADRIAN HEATH insists he has improved Coventry since taking over from the axed Micky Adams.

The Sky Blues have given Heath six games to prove himself but he has won just one from three.
Heath, who faces Cardiff today, said: “We’ve looked better with each game and the players are starting to take things on board.
“It must be apparent to anyone who has seen us that we are improving.
“I want the job and the board know my feelings.
“I understand the club has to go through the necessary procedures but if I win a couple of games I might be in the box seat.”

MICHAEL RICKETTS insists he has found his perfect position at Preston.

The ex-Bolton hitman, signed on a free from Southend last month, plays in a withdrawn role behind frontmen Brett Ormerod and Dave Nugent.
And Ricketts, 28, said: “I like to get on to the ball a lot to make things happen. And if I can get a goal somewhere down the line that would be nice.
“The likes of Brett and Nugent are going to make runs all day â€" and they are both good finishers.
“It’s just a case of if I can find that pass, nine times out of 10 they are going to score goals.”

Iker - Real should keep Woody

Iker Casillas feels Real Madrid should be keeping hold of Jonathan Woodgate.

Casillas came up against his Real colleague on Wednesday as Woodgate made his international return with England during Spain's 1-0 win at Old Trafford.
Woodgate is currently on a season long loan with Middlesbrough - who already have a deal in place with Real for a permanent deal, which is an indication that he is unlikely to return to El Santiago Bernabeu in June.
However, Woodgate is yet to decide on his future plans and Casillas feels it would be a blow to lose him.
"I don't know anything about it, but it is a shame because in the short time he was with us in Madrid he suffered injuries," he said.
"But he still showed the club his qualities and was starting to get his form back.
"He's a great player, one of the best, and it's always a shame to lose great players like him.
"But I'm sure he'll do well wherever he goes."

Huckerby - I Just Want To Play

Saturdays goal hero Darren Huckerby says he is happy to play where ever he is put, so long as he is playing and the team are winning.

Huckerby's late strike gave City a vital three points at the weekend as they came from behind to beat rock-bottom side Leeds United 2-1, with Huckerby looking as sharp as when he first arrived in Norfolk.
Had it not been for the sparkling debut of Simon Lappin - who was pushed back into the left back position following Adam Drury's suss pension',  then the former Leeds man would surely have taken the Man of The Match award after taking the game by the scuff of the neck at the top of the pitch.
It has often been argued that Hucks best position is wide on the left or possibly just tucked in behind the forward two where he can have a more free role and drift in and out when needed, rather than being stuck in a forward position for 90 minutes, something which you wouldn't have thought true had you seen the game on Sat.
But the player himself said he is more than happy where ever he is put, and hopes that his scoring touch will continue as the club look to drag themselves away from the wrong end of the table.
"I will play wherever the manager wants me to play. If he wants me to go up front I will go up front. If he wants me to play as one of the three up front I will.
"It doesn't really bother me. As long as my performances are up to a certain level and the team are playing well I'm not bothered.
"There were two near the end I was unlucky with, but we were just after the win to be honest.
"I wouldn't say it has taken the pressure off, but I think especially after the game in the week, from our performances we deserved something out of both games. We should have had six points." He told the local press.

Bradford part company with Todd
Former Bolton, Derby and Middlesbrough boss Todd, 58, took over the reins at Valley Parade in June 2004, succeeding former England captain Bryan Robson.

First-team captain David Wetherall takes over as caretaker-manager while Bradford search for a new boss.
A statement on the club website said: "Unfortunately, results over the last 20 league games have been poor and so it is time for a change."
Todd told BBC Sport he would probably make a comment on the matter on Wednesday.
Bradford's 1-0 defeat Gillingham on Saturday proved to be the final nail in Todd's coffin.

King's road to recovery

"To have everything you have worked for taken away from you is difficult to come to terms with. But I will keep working hard and keep positive and I know my chance will come again."
If only every footballer who had suffered such a devastating injury had the same attitude as Marlon King.

The 26-year-old striker spent eight years hovering around the lower divisions, until a move to Watford re-ignited his career and propelled him into the promised land of the Premiership.
Just eight games and two goals in, King went to hospital for what he thought was a routine operation on his right knee.
When he woke up, the doctors told him to forget about playing again this season.
The Jamaican international talks BBC Sport through his injury nightmare and explains what part he has had to play in the Hornets' fight to hold on to their Premiership status.

THE INJURY
It was different I guess because it was caused by wear and tear, not one specific incident. It was after we lost at Arsenal I realised I needed something to be done.
There was no sudden impact, it was just that my knee was being battered around a bit. I was feeling niggles but taking painkillers, but after Arsenal it blew up and we went to see the doctor.

----------------
MARLON KING FACTFILE
Born: 26 April, 1980, Dulwich
Clubs: Barnet (60 apps/14 goals), Gillingham (116/47), Nottm For (57/15), Leeds (loan, 9/0), Watford (53/24)
International: Jamaica (12 caps/six goals)
----------------------

They scanned it and couldn't see anything so I let it settle down and started training again, but when it blew up again the surgeon decided to open it up and see what was going on in there.
He went in with a camera and moved a bit of tissue and there was more tissue flapping away and he had to cut that and then drill holes into the side of my knee to make it bleed, so when it forms back into tissue it goes back to normal.
It was a hell of a shock, because when I woke up from the operation I thought they tell me I'd be out for six weeks or so, not six months. I was taken aback, to say the least.
I'd say it was the most disappointing thing that's happened to me in football, but you have to stay positive and get on with it.
I thought to myself, 'it's not like he telling me I've got cancer or AIDS', you know, some people get much worse news - it's always been repairable and I've always been positive.

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
You have to let the healing process take place, you cannot rush things like this because there is always a risk you go too soon and don't give it chance to recover properly.
After two months I was able to walk again, then I had a scan and they said my knee was one of the best they'd seen, so I'm back in light training now, doing bike work, swimming and weights.
I've got a weight plan and a gym plan and it's been going really well for a couple of weeks.
I've got to go and see the surgeon again in six weeks' time and if everything is ok he will let me start full training again, which takes me up to the end of March.
There's a chance I'll be there for the end of the season, if it all goes well, touch wood. But I want to be right for the long term.

WATCHING FROM THE SIDELINES
I'm a terrible watcher, ask anyone. I must admit, it's hard to have to watch your team and be unable to contribute anything on the pitch.
After the season I had last year, just as I was starting to find my feet in the Premiership, it's hard to miss out on so much.

-------------------
" The gaffer is 34 but he looks more like 54 with everything that is happening"
-------------------

I've been to every home game but I missed a lot of away games because I was on crutches and couldn't travel, but I've been at Vicarage Road trying to gee up the boys.
Everyone is still positive and the gaffer is trying his best to make things happen.
I've taken the opportunity to get involved in my coaching badges too, I thought I'd try and do as much as possible while I had the time and I've nearly finished Level 2.
I was always going to do it, it's great that the PFA give us the chance to do these courses because they cost a lot of money.
We are very privileged as footballers to have the opportunity to do this sort of work and I'm keen to learn about coaching.

THE GAFFER
The gaffer will tell you himself that he is learning all the time. He's been in a difficult position before, when he took over and Watford were near the bottom of the Championship.
But he sees this as more of a long-term plan for the club and he wants to make Watford a top-10 Premiership outfit by 2010.
The sale of Ashley Young raised money and the gaffer's been criticised for not bringing in recognisable Premiership stars, but he dosn't want to go and spend recklessly and end up in debt and with a huge wage bill.
He's 34 but he looks more like 54 with everything that's happening at the moment!
The most important thing is that the chairman and the board appreciate what he's done for the club, they believe in him and he believes in them, so you can only go one way if that's the case.
They are building something here. We aren't at the same level as most clubs in this league so we have to be realistic - high-calibre players don't want to join a club at the wrong end.
But the gaffer's building for the next 5-10 years, not just tomorrow. Everyone wants to be in the Premiership, but sometimes you must take one step back to go forwards.

THE FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL
I know things haven't been going that well at Watford, but it's always important to keep team spirit up and keep that bond tight. Just because I can't play, doesn't mean I don't have a role in that.
We've got a lot of youngsters in the changing room. When you're not playing you can see things others don't, so I'm able to get close to people to try and give a helping hand if I can, maybe just some advice.
Will Hoskins is a young striker who has just come in and Darius Henderson has worked his socks off all season long and if I can help these boys at all I try to do so.
We've always had a good spirit, the gaffer's a big believer in that. We have lots of meetings and quite a few of the boys go out together, so there's always a lot of stick flying around.
It's important because when you're not doing so well in the league it can affect you off the pitch, so it's important to stay together and keep believing.
We've won a couple of games recently and wins always help the mood, I don't care who you are. It helps breed confidence and a good atmosphere, too.
Until it's mathematically impossible, there will always be hope we can stay up. If we thought we were already down there'd be no point turning up on a Saturday.
I'd settle for scoring the goal that keeps Watford in the Premiership. You have to keep believing.

Ormerod blow for Preston

Preston striker Brett Ormerod faces a spell on the sidelines after fracturing his cheekbone.

The former Southampton and Blackpool hit-man sustained the injury during Saturday's defeat to Wolves.

Ormerod underwent a successful operation on Monday and he has been told to rest for a week before undergoing a new check on the injury.

The 30-year-old, who only returned to action in October after a broken leg, is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with the cheekbone problem.

EX-CHAIRMAN NEWS....

Bates welcomed by Ridsdale
Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale insists Leeds counterpart Ken Bates will be made to feel welcome at Ninian Park on Saturday.
The clubs meet for the first time since Bates threw former Leeds chairman Ridsdale out of his team's boardroom following Cardiff's 1-0 win at Elland Road back in August.
Bates was incensed by Ridsdale's celebrations of The Bluebirds' winner.
"I haven't spoken to Ken since the incident but, of course, he is welcome at Ninian Park on Saturday," said Ridsdale.
"We have a tradition at Cardiff of welcoming all opposition directors and officials, and he will be offered the same hospitality as everyone else."

Southgate insistent on Viduka
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has again stressed that the club fully intend to offer fresh terms to Mark Viduka.
The Australian target-man is out of contract and is attracting a great deal of attention from clubs in England and abroad.
Viduka is a firm fans' favourite and his recent form has shown that he is more than capable of still playing at the highest level.
Southgate is happy with the forward's present form and is keen to thrash out a fresh agreement with the Australian.
"I'm keen to move ahead with it as quickly as we can," stressed Southgate.
"It's important that we keep the players that we have.
"As I discovered last summer, it's very difficult to get players from other clubs, so it makes little sense to let our best players move on."
Despite the close proximity of Viduka's contract coming to an end, Southgate admitted the club are yet to hold talks.
"We haven't got things underway yet but the games have been coming thick and fast and Mark was away with the Australia squad last week too," said Southgate.
"We want to get it wrapped up as soon as we possibly can. I think everybody wants to sit down and start discussions."

Arsenal move for Liverpool keeper Carson

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is chasing Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson.
Jens Lehmann is out of contract with the Gunners at the end of the season and Wenger has admitted he would like the German to stay.

But he will be nearing 38 by the start of next season and is unlikely to be offered more than a one-year deal.

Lehmann wants double that so Wenger is looking at alternatives and Liverpool star Carson, 21, who is currently on loan at Charlton, fits the bill.

Nettopp slik det skal være. En teambuilder som får det beste ut av folk både individuelt og som et kollegium.
Bare se på hva motsatsen - hissig, impulsiv, dum og usympatisk - fører til.... Trenger vel ikke nevne navn.

GUNNERS LINKED WITH CARSON RAID

Arsenal are plotting a £5million summer bid for Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson, according to newspaper reports.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted last week he does not know whether current No 1 Jens Lehmann will be at the Emirates next season as the German is out of contract and appears to be keen on the security of a longer deal than the 12-month one Arsenal are willing to offer him.
And it seems Carson is the man Wenger wants to succeed the 37-year-old having been impressed with his efforts for Charlton this season.
The England Under-21 custodian is on loan at The Valley but returns to parent club Liverpool in the summer knowing his first-team opportunities will be limited, with Jose Reina firmly established as Rafael Benitez's first choice.
And that could pave the way for a move to London, although Wenger's scouts are also reported to have checked on Celtic's Artur Boruc and Craig Gordon of Hearts.

Carson til Arsenal? Selvsagt!
