Poyet remaining confident

Assistant boss Gus Poyet believes Leeds can avoid relegation at the end of the season, but admits they must win their remaining games.

The Yorkshire outfit are currently bottom of the Championship, four points off safety, and face An uphill battle to avoid relegation.
However, Poyet says it is still possible to climb out of the drop zone, but they will only have themselves to blame if they fail.
He told the club's website: "We are still in the race and we have to win our home games.
"It is in our hands and we cannot blame anyone.
"We can't wait for the (Preston) game. We've gone three unbeaten now and this has given the players the confidence for the last seven games. Preston is at home and we have to win the points."

Pugh keen to turn the screw

There will be no mercy from midfielder Danny Pugh when he lines up for Preston against former club Leeds United tomorrow night.
Pugh had a miserable time at Leeds, seldom getting the chance to show what he could do despite a good scoring record from midfield, and last season he joined Preston.
He now finds himself a regular in a team chasing promotion while Leeds are rock bottom of the Championship.
Pugh acknowledges this is a massive match for Leeds, who are unbeaten in their last three starts, but he added: "It's just as big a game for us and that's what we are concerned with.
"We're in a good position to start creeping back up the table and hopefully get in the top two.
"Leeds are in a difficult position, fighting for their lives, so it's going to be a tough game. We'll definitely be going as the favourites but they've got a lot of quality."
Leeds manager Dennis Wise will delay his selection until he sees how fit striker David Healy, skipper Jonathan Douglas and on-loan Radostin Kishishev are when they return from international duty.
He will also consider the possibility of including Gary Kelly, Hayden Foxe and Rui Marques, who all made their comeback from injury in the reserves on Tuesday.
It may be too early for them, especially Kelly, but reserve team coach Neil Thompson said: "They have to be ready for the next five or six weeks.
"They all need to have their eyes on the games coming up and the fact that they might be needed. That's why it was important for them to get some time on the pitch in their locker."

"Don't forget though with Healy, however brilliant he is for NI (and he is !!) he failed at ManU, was not a world beater at Preston and hs been a big dissappointment under 2 Leeds managers involved in both a play off \ promotion battle and a relegation fight. In addition we faced no competition in getting him to ER to start with and have had no concrete offers for him since, if we had we would have sold him (Hulse, Killa anyone?) Prem managers just do not seem to fancy him.
Clearly he has enormous talent but something is lacking in him whether it be attitude, consistency, lack of desire or whatever
But putting all that aside lets just hope he can turn it on -starting tomorrow against Preston  (he did score twice at Deepdale in his first return there) - till end of season "

Er lenge sidan eg har grua meg til ein Leedskamp på TV, men no til fredagen er eg livredd vi blir avkledd og kan meir eller mindre konstantere at L1 er høgst aktuelt neste sesong.

Casper
Fraze - Rui - Heath - Gray
Blake - Dougie - Kish - Lewis
Healy - Cressy

Nugent will be focused - Chief
Preston boss Paul Simpson insists there will be no problem with David Nugent's mindset ahead of Friday's Championship trip to Leeds.
The 21-year-old striker came off the bench for his England debut and scored in the closing stages of Wednesday night's 3-0 win over Andorra.
The player will return to Preston on a high but Simpson is sure he will be just as keen to do well for North End as they come into the final stretch of their drive for promotion.
Simpson said: "It was perfect for us. I'm sure he's had a real buzz being involved over the last couple of weeks - he had a 10-15 minute run out and scored a goal.
"I expect his confidence will be quite high after that and we'll have to peel him off the ceiling.
"I don't think it'll affect him in anyway.
"It'll give him a big confidence boost but he won't get carried away because he knows we've got important games coming up and we all want him to be a part of it, to see us through these games, and I'm sure it won't affect him in a negative way at all."
Preston can move level with second-placed Birmingham with a victory but Simpson is expecting the game to be far from straightforward as bottom side Leeds need the points for entirely different reasons.
They will also be facing a team containing the Northern Ireland hero David Healy, who scored both goals in his country's 2-1 win over Sweden on Wednesday.
Simpson added: "The two teams both really want the points and it's a big chance for us because now we've got QPR away on Tuesday and it's an opportunity for us to move closer to the automatic promotion places.
"No matter what's going on there, it's always a hard game at Elland Road. You'd think they'll come at us because they'll be desperate to win, it will be physical and there'll be a hostile atmosphere.
"They've got David Healy, who has been on fire for Northern Ireland, and there are a lot of quality players there.
"I'm sure Dennis [Wise] will have them well up for it but it's about us and we'll go there and be positive."

Quartet return to boost Leeds

Kelly: Sidelined since November

Leeds could be boosted by the return of Gary Kelly, Hayden Foxe, Rui Marques and on-loan striker Jemal Johnson for Friday's visit of Preston.
All four players proved their fitness in a midweek run-out for the reserves, with Kelly's return to fitness in particular a welcome filip for Leeds fans.
The veteran full-back has been out since last November with knee and back injuries.
Wolves forward Johnson is expected to return to the bench after recovering from the concussion he sustained in the recent draw at Leicester, while central defenders Marques and Foxe give manager Dennis Wise further options.
Man-of-the-moment David Healy (Northern Ireland), midfielder Jonathan Douglas (Republic of Ireland), Lubomir Michalik (Slovakia) and Radostin Kishishev (Bulgaria) have all returned from midweek international duty unscathed.
Striker Tore Andre Flo (foot) and midfielder Alan Thompson (knee) are not ready to return, but could be back in contention for the visit of Plymouth a week on Saturday.

Alexander worry for Leeds trip
Preston manager Paul Simpson has a concern over Graham Alexander ahead of the trip to Elland Road to face Leeds.
The North End skipper played the full game as Scotland lost 2-0 in Italy on Wednesday night but Simpson will check on a thigh problem sustained by the full-back before finalising his team.
Elsewhere, the international break has been kind to Simpson, with defender Kelvin Wilson (calf), midfielder Pavel Pergl (calf) and wingers Simon Whaley (foot) and Lewis Neal (neck) all available again.
Midfielder Paul McKenna came through an hour of the reserves' 4-2 win over Chester but may not start at Elland Road.
Defender Youl Mawene played the second half for the second string after eight months out with a knee problem but will not be considered, while winger Joe Anyinsah (cartilage) will not play again this season.

Simpson seeks the joy of six
Preston boss Paul Simpson hopes his side can take advantage of two struggling teams to bolster their promotion bid over the next few days.
North End can move joint second in the Championship with victory over Leeds at Elland Road on Friday night and would then have the chance to pick up more points against QPR on Tuesday.
Both sides are struggling to avoid relegation, with Leeds bottom of the table and Rangers just a point above the drop zone.
Simpson sees the coming week as a big opportunity but accepts banking six points may not be a straightforward task.
He said: "It's a big chance for us because now we've got QPR away on Tuesday and it's an opportunity for us to move closer to the automatic promotion places."
But on Friday night's game, he added: "No matter what's going on there, it's always a hard game at Elland Road.
"You'd think they will come at us because they will be desperate to win, it will be physical and there will be a hostile atmosphere.
"They have got David Healy, who has been on fire for Northern Ireland, and there are a lot of quality players there."
Northern Ireland striker Healy will go into the game on a high after netting both goals in his country's shock 2-1 win over Sweden on Wednesday.
Those goals came after his hat-trick helped shoot down Liechtenstein last weekend and Leeds boss Dennis Wise is hopeful he can transfer his international form to the Championship.
Wise told BBC Northern Ireland's Talkback programme: "He just hasn't had the luck with Leeds, he has been hitting shots like that for us and they have been hitting the bar.
"He's an instinctive striker, he can pull a goal out of nothing. He's been playing very well for us, but unfortunately he hasn't been scoring the goals for us that he's been scoring at international level."
Preston will hope to get a win under their belts before the rest of their promotion rivals play over the weekend.
Sunderland boss Roy Keane insists failure is not an option as he prepares to take his side to Cardiff on Saturday.
The Black Cats are undefeated in 13 league games since the turn of the year and victory over the Bluebirds would keep the pressure on top two Derby and Birmingham.
Keane said: "Failure does not cross my mind. I have had a chance to reflect and I am confident we will just keep going.
"The players have got a great desire and I have great faith in them.
"It is the spirit among the players that pleases me the most. We have got the right characters, we have got a lot of experience and I do not think there is a danger of us getting nervy.
"There is no way we are going to slacken off. It is full steam ahead."
Derby are also in action on Saturday as they travel to Barnsley with Birmingham not featuring until they host Coventry on Sunday. Wolves are at home to Southampton and West Brom are at QPR.
At the bottom, Luton are away at Burnley while Southend tackle fellow strugglers Hull.

United out to be TV stars in crunch clash
WHAT is it about games against Preston that make Leeds United fans come out in a nervous sweat?

It was almost 12 months ago that Leeds and Preston were going head to head for the right to take part in the play-off final and were involved in a tense clash at Elland Road in front of the Sky cameras. Fast forward to Friday, March 30 and the two teams are again going to be on Sky with even more at stake at Elland Road. Only this time the United players are playing for their careers in some cases and attempting to avoid the ridicule of being labelled the worst professional team ever to come out of the city.
The fact that Preston are once again seemingly heading for the play-offs serves as a reminder just how far backwards United have gone and despite losing their manager last summer they have enjoyed another excellent campaign considering the resources at the disposal of the boss who took over, Paul Simpson.
The Lancastrians are a more attacking outfit now and have a number of danger men in their ranks, particularly striker David Nugent who was called up into the England squad this week. They also have Danny Pugh who has been in impressive form in midfield since his move from Leeds.
At least United go into the game on their best unbeaten run of the season. The fact that is just three games - and two of them drawn - again indicates just how appalling they have been, but there has been signs of genuine improvement in the last month, particularly since the arrival of Radostin Kishishev in midfield
After a week off due to the internationals they could also have one or two players back from injury to give manager Dennis Wise more options. Tore Andre Flo, Jemal Johnson, Gary Kelly and Alan Thompson are all training again and fingers are crossed that they may play a part in the seven-match run-in.
Wise also added to the ranks at the back end of last week by signing experienced Blackburn Rovers left back Micky Gray on loan. Gray's second loan spell at the club will see him initially remain at Elland Road until April 21 with an option to extend the agreement until the end of the season. He is expected to come straight into the team for the Preston game which gives United a chance to put pressure on all their relegation rivals as they play a day ahead of them.
"We can't wait for the game," said United's assistant manager Gus Poyet. "We've gone three unbeaten now and this has given the players the confidence for the last seven games.
"We are still in the race, and we have to win our home games. It's in our hands and we cannot blame anyone. Preston is at home and we have to win the points.
"Preston away was our second game in charge and it was the only game that I really think they were better than us. I'm looking forward to seeing the difference now."

Championship: Massive game for Leeds - and massive disappointment too

A hugely important game for both sides for totally different reasons - with Leeds desperately scrapping to avoid relegation to the third tier of English football for the first time in the club's history, while Preston haven't given up hope of securing an automatic promotion spot.
The outcome of this one could be influenced by two opposing players who both made headlines in the week at international level. Leeds striker David Healy underlined his status as a cult figure in Northern Ireland with a brace in the 2-1 victory against Sweden, while Preston's David Nugent came off the bench to score on his England debut against Andorra.
Healy has netted a remarkable 29 goals in his 56 games for the Province but, surprisingly, he has scored only eight times in 35 appearance for his club this term, although it has to be said Leeds boss Dennis Wise has been playing him on the flank in a number of those matches.
Preston fans must have been delighted that the club's board resisted any temptation to cash in on Nugent in the January sales and manager Paul Simpson has an abundance of attacking options to partner his star frontman with Michael Ricketts, Brett Omerod, Neil Mellor and Danny Dichio all competing for a starting berth.

SHAILY'S VERDICT: Its hard to believe that less than ten months ago these two sides were battling it out for a place in the play-off final but Leeds could be staring down the barrel of relegation after this one – away win.

From cheers to jeers
Hero Healy expects rough ride from the Preston fans

Northern Ireland hero David Healy believes he will receive a rough reception from Preston fans when he returns to club duty for Leeds United tonight.
The Championship clash at Elland Road may not have the glamour of Northern Ireland's famous 2-1 victory over Sweden on Wednesday night, but it is a hugely important fixture for both teams for completely different reasons.
Leeds, of course, are desperately fighting to avoid relegation while Preston are going for promotion to the Premiership.
In the past Healy, who moved to the Yorkshire club from Deepdale, has been jeered by the Preston fans when the two sides have gone head to head.
The 27-year-old, who took his international goals tally to 29 in just 56 games in midweek, is expecting more of the same tonight.
"Preston are my old side and I'm sure I will get the usual welcome from the Preston supporters," Healy told The Belfast Telegraph.
"They have given me stick in the past and I won't be surprised if it is the same again.
"They are going for promotion and I'm sure will bring a good travelling support, so I'm sure there will be quite an atmosphere at Elland Road.
"This is a massive game for us which we will be going all out to win. We are desperate to climb away from the bottom of the table and away from the relegation places and I want to do all that I can to help.
"I scored in my last match for Leeds before joining up with the Northern Ireland side and hopefully that is a sign of things to come."
Yesterday's Belfast Telegraph revealed that Rangers boss Walter Smith and coach Ian Durrant were at Windsor Park on Wednesday to watch Healy deliver his double strike.
"Ian Durrant is a hero of mine from when I was young and it is flattering to be linked with a club like Rangers but at the moment all my focus is on helping Leeds," said Healy, who is primed to start for Dennis Wise's men tonight in a match which is being televised by Sky.
Another club who may come into the reckoning for Healy is Sunderland, who under inspirational manager Roy Keane are looking good for promotion to the Premiership.
Haely's international team-mate Jonny Evans, who is on loan at Sunderland from Manchester United, said: "I will be telling Roy Keane about how good David Healy is. There is no doubt in my mind that he could play in the Premiership."

Leeds United v Preston North End

Dennis Wise has Gary Kelly, Hayden Foxe, Rui Marques and Jemal Johnson back at his disposal, but Tore Andre Flo (foot) and Alan Thompson (knee) are still short of fitness.
After scoring five goals during international week, David Healy will be hoping to outshine England's latest goalscorer David Nugent (pictured) and secure a win for bottom-of-the-table Leeds.
Preston are pushing for automatic promotion and manager Paul Simpson has seen Kelvin Wilson (calf), Pavel Pergl (calf), Simon Whaley (foot) and Lewis Neal (neck) all return to fitness.
Graham Alexander is a doubt after suffering a thigh injury on international duty with Scotland, with Youl Mawene and Joe Anyinsah both sidelined.

Litt vorspiel....

Super Sheridan put skids under Preston
Leeds Utd 3 Preston 0, FA Cup
Saturday, January 8, 1983, Elland Road

LEEDS UNITED and Preston North End were almost sick of the sight of each other last season, but the clubs have not always been regular foes.
The 2005-06 campaign brought the teams together on four occasions, notably during the gripping two-legged play-off semi-final that eventually swung in Leeds' favour, and few players needed an introduction by the time United visited Deepdale for a second time on May 8.
But, despite their recent battles, encounters between the clubs have been few in number during football's modern era. Following United's promotion to Division One in 1964, the Elland Road outfit went 40 years before clashing with Preston in a league fixture, and the visit of North End to Yorkshire for an FA Cup tie in 1983 was a rare meeting.
Preston's history is rich, but the 1980s were steeped in decline for the Lancashire club. North End dropped into the fourth division in 1985 and came close to finishing bottom of the Football League 12 months later, spared the humiliation only by Torquay's woeful season.
The Preston team that travelled to Leeds for their FA Cup third-round clash in 1983 were making hard work of the third division, and the fixture was also a welcome diversion for United's player-manager, Eddie Gray.
Leeds had endured a five-match winless streak in the build-up to Preston's visit, culminating in a 3-0 defeat at Wolves on January 3, but Gray's players made the most of a break from their league campaign with a tough, but deserved, third round win.
The scoreline flattered Leeds, and Gray conceded: "There wasn't a three-goal difference between the sides on the day. But hopefully it will set us up for the remainder of the season."
United's win was inspired by an influential performance from John Sheridan, who scored the opening goal and dominated the midfield with assurance.
Sheridan broke the deadlock in the 31st minute after Aidan Butterworth beat Tommy Booth and found his team-mate on the edge of the box. Sheridan's shot took a deflection off Alan Gowling and sailed into the net.
North End were repeatedly stretched by United's attack, and goalkeeper Peter Litchfield parried Butterworth's shot before a header from Paul Hart was cleared off the line.
Gwyn Thomas also went close, but Leeds' failure to improve their advantage, encouraging Preston to throw men forward.
John Lukic produced an excellent save to deny Graham Houston, and the pressure was not lifted until the 78th minute when Terry Connor's goal settled the tie. Connor was set up by Arthur Graham and promptly returned the compliment as Graham's late finish eased United into round four.
Gray's players were handed a visit to Arsenal during the fourth-round draw, a fixture which was expected to bring a quick end to their cup run, but an epic battle saw the Gunners eventually stagger through after two gruelling replays.

UNITED: Lukic, Aspin, E Gray, Sheridan (Hird 83), Hart, Burns, McNab, Connor, Butterworth, Thomas, Graham.
Attendance: 16,816.
