Flo hoping for clear Leeds United run

Tore Andre Flo

TORE Andre Flo is hoping for a clear run to the end of the season after playing without pain for the first time in 10 months on Sunday.
Flo made a brief appearance as a substitute towards the end of Leeds United's 1-0 defeat at Cheltenham Town, and the striker expects to be heavily involved during the Christmas period after several false starts to his career at Elland Road.
Two operations on a persistent foot injury have prevented Flo from making a serious contribution to United's season, and his 17-minute outing against Cheltenham was his seventh appearance in almost 11 months with Leeds. The Norwegian has started only one game, United's 3-2 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion last season.
Flo was a surprise inclusion in Dennis Wise's squad at Tranmere Rovers on the opening day of this term, and he scored in a 4-1 win over Southend seven days later, but his fitness has been a constant concern, and Wise sent him for surgery last month.
A previous attempt to pin a broken bone in his foot had failed, and Flo was forced to succumb to a second operation, placing him on the sidelines for six weeks.
Wise immediately moved to quell fears that his former Chelsea team-mate might be forced to consider retiring, but Flo admitted his relief after making his return on a disappointing afternoon at Whaddon Road.
Flo said: "Finally I'm playing football without pain. It's been 10 months since I was last able to do that, and it's a big relief to be back again.
"My whole time here has been very frustrating. I've fractured the bone twice and had two operations, and I've had problems with a ligament as well. It hasn't been good, and it's been a long struggle.
"I was going well for a while at the start of the season but I felt the pain coming back slowly and I didn't have much choice about the operation. But I'm feeling as good now as I have for months. It's been worth it.
"I feel like everything has been sorted now, finally. They've put a big screw through the bone and that should never break."
Flo was hindered throughout the summer by his injured foot, and was scarcely involved in United's pre-season schedule, but Wise handed him a new one-year deal amid the belief that Flo's career with Leeds had ended with their relegation from the Championship in April.
The forward joined United in January but played in just two matches last season, and Wise revealed that Flo had been "embarrassed" by his meagre contribution to the club's Championship campaign.
Flo's return at the beginning of this term came with the admission that, at the age of 34, he had feared the potential consequences of his injury, but his latest comeback has once again quietened thoughts of retirement.
Flo said: "You start to think, of course, that maybe you're getting towards the end.
"When you get older it's harder and tougher to get through injuries, but there was never a time when I wanted to give up. I was determined to come back and I've been working very hard. It seems to have worked.
"My fitness needs to be a bit better, though. I've had a programme every day, and I've been in for hours and hours, but now I'm back I have to start thinking about playing, and playing well.
"The only thing in my mind was to get well, but I've got to focus on playing football again."

Nuvel.

Sist mot Cheltenham kom det et par kommentarer av typen: "Showed his class in how he took down that ball."

Leeds United's Flo raring to go

TORE Andre Flo expects Leeds United to reassert themselves against Port Vale on Tuesday night, insisting last weekend's defeat at Cheltenham Town was not indicative of a loss of form.
United have taken the opportunity to catch their breath this week after last month's loss to Hereford United denied them an FA Cup second-round tie at home to Hartlepool today. But the pressure will return immediately on Tuesday following their failure to win at Whaddon Road.
An unusually wasteful performance in front of goal exposed Leeds to the 86th-minute strike from Steven Gillespie last Sunday, and their 1-0 defeat â€" only their second loss of the league season â€" sparked whispers that the impenetrable bubble created by Dennis Wise at Elland Road was in danger of bursting.
The month of November placed huge demands on Wise's squad, with seven games in the space of 22 days, and the cost of a busy schedule was high.
United suffered league defeats to Carlisle United and Cheltenham, and were knocked out of both the FA Cup and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
A tally of two wins from seven games was a troubling statistic on the back of sustained consistency through the first three months of the season, but Flo refused to accept that United's dominant air is threatening to fade.
The Norwegian striker said: "We're very happy with how the season has gone, and we were disappointed with the result (at Cheltenham).
"It's a game we should have won and we were looking for three points. There were enough chances to make that happen and we didn't take them.
"But we didn't play badly, or anything like that. We were the better team and it was one of those days when the ball wouldn't go in. They had hardly any chances and then got their goal right at the end. It wasn't meant to be.
"We haven't had many days like that, but it's not a big problem. We're in a good position in the league and confidence is very high."
Wise used the nine-day break from league fixture to give his squad a short and welcome break from training, but December is likely to be a more pivotal month with six League One matches planned between Tuesday's clash with Port Vale and the visit to Swansea City on December 29.
United's manager will wait until Leeds return from South Wales at the end of the month before concerning himself with the club's league position, but he agreed that a strong run through their next six games would be vital if United plan to make good their early promise of promotion.
Wise said: "It's a big month, and we need a strong run through December. It's such an important part of the season.
"We've got to look at things at the end of that month because by that stage you know the position you're in, and where you can get to."
United are likely to be without Leon Constantine against Port Vale after the striker injured a toe, but Wise is hoping to recall Casper Ankergren after the goalkeeper missed the visit to Cheltenham with a gashed knee.
Flo's comeback from foot surgery, meanwhile, is a potential key development with the fight for position at the top of League One intense and delicately balanced.
And Wise is once again in possession of a strong pool of strikers having added loanee Mark De Vries to his squad last month.
Flo's appearance as a substitute at Cheltenham was only his seventh in a Leeds shirt, a record which has been dictated by constant problems with his foot. The striker has broken a bone twice and undergone two operations, but he said: "Finally I'm playing football without pain.
They've put a big screw through the bone and that should never break.
"When you get older it's harder and tougher to get through injuries, but there was never a time when I wanted to give up. I was determined to come back and I've been working very hard. It seems to have worked."

Karl Hot Shot
