Kjent fjes

Kamp 27/10:

Southend 0-1 Carlisle
Joe Garner's fifth goal of the season deposed Southend and put Carlisle proudly top of the League One table.
Garner had a header saved by Steve Collis but Southend had the best chance of the first half when Steve Hammell's free-kick was saved by Kieren Westwood.
But on the hour, a centre from Chris Lumsden was knocked down by Danny Graham to Garner who was unmarked and clinically finished from seven yards.
Graham should have scored but stabbed wide of an open goal three yards out.

Carlisle: Westwood, Raven, Livesey, Murphy, Aranalde (Arnison 78), Anyinsah, Lumsdon, Bridge-Wilkinson, Hackney, Garner, Graham.
Subs Not Used: Howarth, Gall, Carlton, McDermott.
Booked: Raven, Anyinsah, Livesey, Westwood.
Goals: Garner 59.

Er det no tid for sesongens første tap?

COME ON LEEDS !!

26/02/1985 Brunton Park Division Two 2 - 2 5484 Aspin, Wright

WITH the exception of one season – the 2004-05 campaign – Brunton Park has been a Football League ground ever since Carlisle United were elected to Division Three North in 1928.

Located within the reach of the nearby River Petteril, Carlisle's stadium has long been prone to flooding and was badly damaged two years ago after heavy rain in Cumbria.

The downpour left Brunton Park under seven feet of water, and around £1.5m was spent repairing the ground before Carlisle's next home fixture was staged a month later.

A goldfish found alive close to one of the pitch's goalmouths was later adopted as United's mascot.

Her er en liten kuriositet:

Scott Carson lives in Merseyside with his girlfriend. They have one son, Hayden. His younger brother Grant Carson is also a goalkeeper, currently on the books of Carlisle United.

Gray: It's Leeds' league
Former boss backs Wise guys to go all the way

"They'll not only go up, they'll win the league"
Eddie Gray

Leeds United legend Eddie Gray says the club will win League One - despite losing Gus Poyet to Spurs.
On the day the Uruguayan quit as Dennis Wise's assistant to return to Tottenham, their former player and two-time manager backed the Elland Road outfit to still take the title.
Saturday's 4-2 win over Millwall was their 11th victory in 13 league games in a season which started with a 15-point deduction.
They are now sixth, just four points behind leaders Carlisle - who they play on Saturday - and even though Poyet's departure will come as a setback, Gray has no doubts that the good times are about to return to Leeds.
"They'll not only go up, they'll win the league," he told Sky Sport News.
"They're a big football club in an average division, let's say that. They'll definitely go up. They'll win the league I think."
More than 30,000 watched a brace from Jonathan Douglas and singles from Jermaine Beckford and David Prutton overpower Wise's former club.
And says Gray, it is that support that sets them apart from their rivals off the field, while the players continue to perform on it.
"It's not so much down the team, but the football club in general," he said of their form.
"Look at the game last weekend - there was over 30,000 against Millwall, who probably brought about 500 fans. Leeds United is a big football club."

Ward planning to topple Leeds
Carlisle boss John Ward is relishing the chance to end Leeds' unbeaten start to the season when the two high-flying sides clash on Saturday.
The Cumbrians sit top of League One following a 1-0 win at Southend at the weekend, but Leeds are only four points behind in sixth place, despite starting the season with a 15-point deficit.
Ward told the Carlisle News and Star: "We are going to be sitting top of the league and Leeds will come unbeaten.
"There will be come great competition on and off the field - their supporters will be vociferous but our supporters can more than match them. And we will try and do that on the pitch as well.
"I'm really excited about what is happening here. Now we've got to get our heads down and see if we can topple Leeds. It's our turn next so let's see if we can do it."

Leeds United clockwatch:

Tuesday 30 October
9.13am - Carlisle say they are heading for a sell out ahead of Saturday's match. When the ticket office closed last night approximately 14,000 tickets had been sold.
The club say: "If the demand for tickets continues at the levels it has reached over the past 6 days, then there is a real possibility that Brunton Park will be sold out by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning."

Elland Road giants won’t faze United says Zigor

BATTLING Blues defender Zigor Aranalde has pledged Carlisle United won’t be intimidated by Dennis Wise and Leeds in this weekend’s big promotion showdown at Brunton Park.
A bumper crowd including 3,400 Leeds fans will watch table-topping Carlisle bid to become the first team to beat Wise’s side this season.
And veteran left-back Aranalde says the Yorkshire side do not frighten United despite their formidable form under Wise.
“Leeds are a huge club but they are in our division and we won’t be intimidated by a team in our division,” said the 34-year-old.
“I see them as the same as any other team in our division. I don’t mind whether it’s Leeds, Nottingham Forest or Cheltenham. It is another game and we have to prepare for it the same as we normally do.
“They were playing in the Champions League six years ago, but they are in our league now. The 15-point penalty means they have started the season very focused on what they want to achieve, and they have adapted very well, which sometimes take time when you move into a lower league.
“But they will expect a tough game. Everyone who has come here has had a tough game this season and Saturday won’t be an exception.”
Aranalde needed five stitches in his top lip after being struck by a flying elbow in the 1-0 win at Southend on Saturday which took John Ward’s side to the top of League One.
It meant he missed the last 10 minutes of the victory which makes this weekend’s game arguably the biggest League One clash of the season so far.
But the Basque ace will line up against Leeds well aware of their threats, including rejuvenated former Carlisle loan striker Jermaine Beckford, who flopped during his month at Brunton Park last season but has his seven goals this season under Wise.
“When he was here, maybe he didn’t show his best,” Aranalde said. “But it is very difficult for anyone to come on loan for a month and show everything in that short period.
“He is a quality player and he is showing now what he is capable of. He will be a player to keep an eye on, for sure.”
Wise, who yesterday lost assistant boss Gus Poyet to Tottenham, has been handed a three-match touchline ban for abusing ref Danny McDermid in their recent 1-1 draw at Gillingham, but this does not start until after the Carlisle trip.
On United’s rise to the top, Aranalde added: “Not many teams will win at Southend and if we haven’t got the confidence now, we never will.
“The most difficult thing is to keep the top position, because everybody will be chasing us. We have to keep our form and if we win on Saturday, we will still be top. It’s something to look forward to.”

£200,000!

CARLISLE UNITED’S hugely-anticipated clash with Leeds United this Saturday is poised to sell out in the next 48 hours – netting the Blues record gate receipts of more than £200,000.
The visit of Dennis Wise’s unbeaten side to face John Ward’s table-toppers now looks certain to draw a capacity 16,903 crowd to Brunton Park.
It will be the biggest gate for a home league game for 31 years and the most financially lucrative Brunton Park league fixture in United’s history.
United had shifted more than 14,000 tickets as the News & Star went to press today, after another day of non-stop sales yesterday.
Only standing room remains available for the game with all seats in the CBS and Main Stands having sold out.
“I am astounded by the level of interest,” said United’s operations manager George Thomson. “It’s absolutely brilliant.
“We have been selling an average of 1,500 every day and if things continue like they are, we will sell out by the end of Wednesday or by Thursday morning.
“Since Monday of last week we have had people queuing at the ticket office all day, every day. The phones have been ringing non-stop and it got to the stage where it brough the phone system down on Friday.
“This is exactly what we want – thousands of people roaring Carlisle United on to success.”
Thomson said a 16,903 sell-out would net United “just over £200,000”, although this will be offset by the increased cost of policing the game, with 3,400 Leeds fans expected to make the journey from Yorkshire.
United’s official website records their highest-ever gate receipts as the £146,000 from the League Cup tie with Tottenham in 1997.
That has undoubtedly been surpassed by bumper crowds for subsequent cup ties such as the visit of Arsenal in 2001, and five-figure league games like the final home game of the 2005-06 season against Torquay, which drew 13,467.
But Saturday’s game – which should see the biggest home league crowd since 20,001 watched the Blues host Sunderland on February 24, 1976 – looks set to break new ground for gate receipts.
The police presence in Carlisle in the build-up to the game will be much stronger than normal, but Thomson played down fears of trouble between rival fans.
“There have been so many negative noises about Leeds coming, but there were similar noises about the Millwall game but that was a super day. Around the ground, certainly, the atmosphere was excellent.
“It’s a top-of-the-league team versus an unbeaten team and we want people to come and really enjoy it.”
Thomson said the club would prefer fans still without tickets to come to the ground to buy theirs if possible, rather than use the under-pressure phone system.
And he urged fans to get to Brunton Park early on Saturday as queues were inevitable. “That is the price of success – but we will quite happily keep paying that price,” he added.

Westwood only eyeing next game
Carlisle goalkeeper Keiren Westwood reckons his side should concentrate on securing points rather than their new status as League One leaders.
Westwood, who recently turned 23, kept his seventh clean sheet of the season United beat Southend 1-0 to climb to the summit of the league table.
He told the club's official website: "It was a brilliant result for us. It was second versus third, so it was a big game and we've managed to get a cheeky 1-0 and go top of the League, which is great.
"This thing is though, it's still very early so we're not going to start spouting off saying we're going to do this or that.
"Whenever anyone asks me about that, and I've been the same through the years here, then I always say that we're just trying to get as many points as quickly as we can, and then we'll take it from there."

Marching on together!

Lumsdon relishing Leeds encounter

Carlisle midfielder Chris Lumsdon is looking forward to testing himself against the best when his side face Leeds at Brunton Park on Saturday.
The Blues moved to the top of the League One table with a win over Southend at the weekend and Lumsdon believes they have nothing to fear despite Leeds' unbeaten start to the season.
He told the club website: "We're right up for Saturday. I don't think there's any point in us fearing them.
"They're a team who are doing really well and they have some players who shouldn't be in this league, and should be higher up, but these are the games you should want to play in.
"If you're frightened then you shouldn't bother playing and I can't wait. I can't wait for the crowd, the game, and hopefully it'll be a good one.
"From a player's point of view, this is a taste of where we want to go. We want to be playing the big teams in front of the big crowds. That's what we want to do, test ourselves against the best and come out on top."

Frazer - Rui - Heath - Clapham
Prutton - Douglas - Howson - Carole
Kandol - Beckford

Super Leeds since 1968
