Ward: Leeds are favourites

Manager John Ward believes his side are overwhelming underdogs for Saturday's visit of Leeds United despite Carlisle United sitting at the top of the League One table.
The Cumbrians moved to the summit after last weekend's 1-0 success at Southend United, but Ward insists all the pressure is on the West Yorkshire club ahead of a 16,600 sell-out at Brunton Park.
"There is pressure on Leeds, because we are the underdog side. Three years ago this football club was in the Conference," he told the News & Star.
"In terms of club size we shouldn't be in the same league, but that's nothing I can control.
"We don't normally get 13,000 home fans in here and in a sense it's going to be like a cup tie.
"I think they see Carlisle as the small club versus Leeds as the big club, and in that case people get behind the underdog a little bit.
"Without the points deduction they'd be flying at the top of this division and we wouldn't be top.
"We have got that in perspective, but it's a cracking game, we go into it in decent form and Leeds go into it unbeaten."

:D Typisk formulert fra den typiske leeds-fan!

Carlisle blir nok ei hard nøtt!

Midfield worries for Carlisle clash
Leeds manager Dennis Wise faces a midfield crisis ahead of his side's trip to Brunton Park to face League One leaders Carlisle on Saturday

Radostin Kishishev will miss his second successive match following his return to Elland Road on loan from Leicester due to a muscle tear and Ian Westlake has this week broken a toe in training.
Skipper Alan Thompson remains sidelined with a calf problem and Andy Hughes missed out last week with a groin injury.
Shaun Derry only returned to reserve-team action this week following a long-term Achilles injury, so Robert Bayly and Curtis Weston could come under consideration.
Wise, who will have new assistant manager Dave Bassett in the dugout for his first match since replacing Gus Poyet, has no other new injury or suspension problems.
Tore Andre Flo is recovering from foot surgery, but fellow striker Leon Constantine returned to full training this week following a broken ankle.

Carlisle v Leeds United

Carlisle manager John Ward has been handed an injury boost via the return of Jeff Smith and Neale McDermott, while Matthew Brown and Zigor Aranalde are also available.

Dennis Wise's Leeds are struggling for midfield options with Radostin Kishishev (muscle tear), Ian Westlake (broken toe), captain Alan Thompson, Andy Hughes and Shaun Derry all sidelined.

Skysports.com's predictions: Carlisle 1 Leeds United 1

Per-Stian

Eg går for tre deilige, nye poeng i ettermiddag.

Ankergren
Richardson Heath Marques Clapham
Carole Douglas Prutton Thompson (Da Costa)
Beckford Kandol

Hughes set to replace Westie

Leeds United will be forced to reorganise their midfield again tomorrow after losing Ian Westlake to a broken toe.
Westlake started his first league fixture for more than two months against Millwall last Saturday, but he will miss a large part of the coming month after injuring his foot in training this week.

Boss Dennis Wise, whose midfield has been repeatedly disrupted by selection problems this season, said: "It's disappointing for us, especially because he started his first game for a while on Saturday. We'll have to assess the situation."

United were already expecting to be without Alan Thompson and Radostin Kishishev, who are both suffering from minor muscle strains, but Andrew Hughes should be available at Carlisle United this weekend having recovered from the groin injury he sustained at Brighton a fortnight ago.

Shaun Derry and Leon Constantine have completed long spells of rehabilitation and returned to full training but neither player is likely to be considered for a place in Wise's squad tomorrow, and Westlake's absence may be the only alteration to the side which beat Millwall 4-2.

A long-standing foot injury will enforce Tore Andre Flo's absence for the fifth successive game, and Wayne Andrews was sent home at the end of his month-long loan from Coventry City this week, leaving the responsibility up front squarely on the shoulders of Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol.

A number of players, including Portuguese winger Filipe Da Costa, midfielder Curtis Weston and defender Ben Parker, staked their claims for inclusion during a dominant display from United's reserves against Hartlepool United at Elland Road on Wednesday.

United (from): Ankergren, Richardson, Heath, Marques, Huntington, Clapham, Parker, Prutton, Douglas, Hughes, Carole, Da Costa, Weston, Howson, Bayly, Kandol, Beckford, Lucas, Martin.

NEW Leeds No 2 Dave Bassett fears fans will blame him if the club lose at Carlisle today.
Bassett was this week named as Dennis Wise’s deputy after Gus Poyet quit for Tottenham.
Leeds will be hoping to defend their 13-match unbeaten run and Bassett said: “I spent Thursday watching the players train and getting to know everybody.
“On Friday I couldn’t be there due to commitments. If we lose, it won’t be down to me.”

Carlisle in for rude wake-up call from United

Jermaine Beckford

Carlisle United v Leeds United
WITH excitement approaching fever-pitch in Carlisle as the town prepares for its biggest football attendance in more than 30 years, there is a feeling in Cumbria that the last remaining unbeaten record in the Football League is about to end.
The manner in which John Ward's side have stormed to the top of League One is a factor behind such optimism, as is the departure this week of Dennis Wise's trusted lieutenant, Gus Poyet, to Spurs.
Losing such an influential figure will, according to a large number of Carlisle devotees, have disrupted Leeds to such an extent that they will wilt in front of what is certain to be a seething cauldron of an atmosphere as Brunton Park is filled to its 16,600 capacity.
One man, however, who is adamant the loss of Poyet will not be a factor today is Wise, the United manager pointing to the way in which his players thrashed Millwall last weekend as evidence that any disruption will be kept to a minimum.
Asked what impact losing the Uruguayan would have against the League One leaders today, he replied: "None at all. The change came last week when Gus left.
"The players were told on the Friday what the situation was. I said there was a massive possibility Gus would not be coming back.
"The main thing is it is coaches and managers who give players ideas and mine have not changed. The players just have to keep doing what they have to do. No one from the playing side has left, do you see what I am getting at?
"There is nothing too different about what is happening. They know their jobs and that will not change.
"I told them before Millwall 'these things happen, but you are a group of players who will not let this affect you'.
"If there was going to be any effect it would have been at the start of the season when the difficult situations occurred. They were much bigger.
"It was slightly flat on the Friday (before Millwall), but the players adjusted. This is a completely different game, it is Carlisle.
"Maybe some people outside this club will be thinking 'Gus has gone, Leeds may lose because of that'. But that will not be the case. It will be all about us trying to get a result on the day, nothing else."
All tickets for today's game were sold a couple of days ago to ensure that Carlisle will host their biggest crowd since 20,001 watched the visit of Sunderland in 1976.
Leeds, who have won 11 and drawn two of their opening 13 games, will have two new faces in the technical area today with Dave Bassett having succeeded Poyet as assistant manager.
Former Notts County assistant manager John Gannon, a player under Bassett at Sheffield United, has also joined the coaching staff so Leeds will not be short of experience with the new boys joining Wise, goalkeeping coach Andy Beasley and Joe Allon in the away dugout.
Wise said: "John knows the game and he is a good coach. He is someone I know well and trust well. And 'Harry' brings experience and he also knows the game.
"We do not need too many fresh ideas. Harry and me had a chat and he said 'you are doing fine'. If there is anything that needs tweaking, we will do it.
"I have told Harry how we have been playing and how we go about things. It is always nice to have an experienced manager to give you ideas."
Such experience could be invaluable as United look to bring to an end Carlisle's impressive record since Ward replaced Neil McDonald as manager.
Wise said: "It is going to be a tough game. Carlisle have played six at home and won four of them, they are doing very well. I expect them to play 4-4-1-1.
"I have seen a couple of DVDs of them and they look a solid outfit. They have not had too many injuries â€" if they get a few of them, it might change.
"But they defend as a team and make it very difficult for you. They seem to have been nicking results 1-0."
Wise will be forced into at least one change with Ian Westlake having broken a toe in training on Tuesday.
It means a potential headache for the Leeds manager with Alan Thompson and loanee Radostin Kishishev already having been ruled out.
Shaun Derry returned to action with the reserves in midweek, but Wise considers the midfielder well short of match fitness and wants him to go out on loan.
Leeds had been hoping to bring in a loan striker before the trip to Cumbria, but have travelled with no back-up to first-choice pair, Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol.
Beckford, in particular, will be keen to shine after a disappointing loan spell at Brunton sPark last season when he failed to impress in four outings.

Leeds or Carlisle? Blues legend Peter is rooting for Cumbrians

Then and now: Former Blues skipper Peter McConnell

LEGENDARY former Carlisle United captain Peter McConnell has a foot in both camps today, having started his distinguished career with Leeds.
But the man who skippered the Blues more times than any other player is in no doubt where his allegiances lie this afternoon.
“People have been asking me if my feelings are a bit mixed on this one,” said the former wing half, who will be among the 16,600 capacity crowd at Brunton Park today.
“But I have to say that my loyalties are definitely with Carlisle United.
“Leeds was my first club as a 15-year-old and it was a boyhood dream to be playing football and at a club like that.
“But my fondest memories are with Carisle. I had so many happy times there, I was captain for seven years, we had promotions and my kids were brought up there.
“I always get a lovely reception when I go back up there, although I suppose there might be the odd boo if the Leeds fans find out I’m supporting Carlisle!”
McConnell, who turned 70 in March, inspired Carlisle to back-to-back promotions in 1964 and 1965, during a Brunton Park career that brought 306 appearances, 27 goals and the undying respect of the Cumbrian faithful.
The ex-skipper, who still lives in the Leeds area, is close friends with fellow former Blues great George McVitie, who he will accompany to the game today.
“I used to go up for games quite often until Michael Knighton took over,” he said. “He didn’t seem to have much time for ex-players and it’s only since he left that I have started going back.
“Paul Simpson and Dennis Booth created a really nice atmosphere around the place. It’s great to hear that Dennis is back there now. I knew him from the time I played against him when he was with Charlton. He says he’s still got the scar on his left leg from when I tackled him!”
McConnell said he is looking forward to seeing Brunton Park packed to the rafters today. “We were getting 13-14,000 regularly when we were playing and on the last game of the ‘65 season, when we had to beat Mansfield to get promotion, there were 17,000 there and they virtually carried us for the first 20 minutes. We went three up and just overpowered them.
“The crowd can really help you in that respect and I’m sure they will have that effect this time as well.”
He added: “Leeds have been blessed with a bit of luck this season. They have won so many games in the last five minutes.
“They are pretty strong at the back, although Danny Graham and Joe Garner seem to be quite a G-force for Carlisle at the moment.
“I think it will be a good duel.”
United lost their top spot last night after Swansea drew 1-1 with Gillingham.
Gary Madine fired a hat-trick as United's youth team thrashed Oldham 4-1 on the Sheepmount yesterday. Andrew Cook was also on target for Eric Kinder's young Blues.

Abbo: I knew Jermaine could be real deal

FORMER Blues loan striker Jermaine Beckford will provide Leeds’ main goal threat today â€" and that comes as no surprise to Carlisle number two Greg Abbott.
Abbott was a coach at Elland Road for nearly nine years before joining Carlisle last year, and knows all about the qualities that persuaded Leeds to snap up the former Wealdstone hitman in 2005.
After a disappointing month at Brunton Park last season the 23-year-old is revitalised under Dennis Wise this term, with seven goals to his name so far.
“He was a lad who always had potential written all over him,” Abbott said.
“His spell here gave him a bit of confidence to think he can play at this level, then he went to Scunthorpe and scored some fantastic goals.
“He has gone from strength to strength. He’s a fantastic kid, and I’ve got a lot of time for him. Hopefully he doesn’t score or play well against us, but after that I wish him success because I like people who have come from the lower reaches of football.”

United boss John Ward also says he is well aware of the danger posed by Beckford and strike partner Tresor Kandol, but said his team are capable of pulling off a win that would stun the division.
“People expect Leeds to win games in League One, so if they weren’t to win that would make people sit up and take notice,” he said. “It’s a tough one, but I would rather be here than anywhere else.”
United should be unchanged, although fit-again Jeff Smith is likely to be back among the substitutes. Andrew Hughes is set to replace injured Ian Westlake (broken toe) in Leeds’ midfield.
