Leeds and Swansea to Salute Gentle Giant

LEEDS and Swansea may be locked in a tense League One campaign, but next Saturday both sets of fans will come together to celebrate the career of John Charles.
Born in Swansea, The Gentle Giant was revered by both sets of fans and he scored 150 league goals in eight years at Leeds, including 42 goals in the 1953-54 season.
The wife of Wales’ greatest footballing son, Glenda, and his younger brother Mel, another former Welsh soccer international, will be paraded to the Liberty faithful in memory of the hero.
Charles, who was never cautioned or dismissed in his 26-year career, was granted the freedom of Swansea in 2003, and is immortalised at Elland Road as the West Stand now bears his name and both The Liberty and Elland Road have a bust of the man.

Charles Junior said:
"It will be a very emotional occasion for everyone."
"John would have loved to have been at this game and I think I speak for everyone when I say we all would have loved to see him here."
"Swansea and Leeds fans are both extremely passionate and love their teams; but on Saturday when they remember John, they’ll be as one."
"Both sets of supporters revered John and I can tell you that John loved them just as much."
"John may never have played for Swansea but he was on the Vetch Field ground-staff and was incredibly proud of where he came from."
"He enjoyed his time at Leeds incredibly and loved it up north so much that he made Leeds his home from home."

Ray Fell, chairman of the Leeds United Supporters' said:
"He is respected in Swansea and revered in Leeds. The regular debate at Elland Road is ‘Who was our all-time best player, Billy Bremner or John Charles’. For me it was John Charles."
"It takes a special man to bond two rival supporters and John was very special. Leeds and Swansea fans have enjoyed a very special rapport over the years and that is down to one man."
"He wasn’t just a great player but a great man. He enjoyed a great rapport with his people and Leeds and Swansea fans will unite together on Saturday to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible life of John Charles."

Roberto Martinez said:
"John Charles was a one-off and played football how it should be played. The footballing world hasn’t seen many players like John Charles over the years."
"The Swansea v Leeds game next weekend would have been his type of game, two wonderful attacking teams at the top of the table trying to end the year in style."
"John Charles’ links with Swansea City bring great pride to this club and I’m sure Leeds will say the same. I’m sure Saturday will be a special occasion."

Leeds Conquerors set for Liberty Parade

SWANSEA living legends of yesteryear will be paraded to the Liberty faithful before Saturday’s festive fixture with Leeds United.
Swans heroes such as Alan Curtis, Jeremy Charles, John Mahoney who were part of Swansea’s stunning 5-1 thumping over Leeds back in 1981 at the Vetch are set to receive a raptuous welcome.
On that fateful day the goals came from Jeremy Charles, Alan Curtis and a hat trick within ten minutes from Bob Latchford.
That famous win was watched by a bumper crowd of 23,489 and the club are anticipating another big gate as ticket's for next Saturday's match are sold out.

Swans sweat on Scotland's fitness

Jason Scotland faces a late fitness test ahead of the clash with Cheltenham on Boxing Day.
The Trinidad & Tobago striker is struggling with a stomach problem and could join Warren Feeney (ankle ligaments) and Owain Tudur-Jones (ankle) on the sidelines.
Guillem Bauza may be handed his first league start for the club by manager Roberto Martinez if Scotland is ruled out as the Swans bid to reclaim top spot in League One.
Thomas Butler and Andrea Orlandi will both be hoping to be given the chance to impress again with Marcos Painter and Garry Monk both expected to continue in the side after returning to action in the 3-0 in over Southend last weekend following hamstring and hip problems respectively.

Scotland - on target for Swansea.

SWANS TROUNCE CHELTENHAM

Swansea threw down the gauntlet to Saturday's visitors, Leeds as a superb display of attacking football left Cheltenham chasing shadows for most of the afternoon in a 4-1 win.
A brace by Andy Robinson in the 18th and 20th minutes was just reward for superb one-touch football.
Ferrie Bodde put the result beyond doubt two minutes after the interval and 76th minute substitute, Jason Scotland, was on the pitch for less than 60 seconds before hammering in Swansea's fourth.
The Robins had some consolation eight minutes from time when substitute Steve Gillespie's overhead kick beat Dorus de Vries in the home goal.
The Swans missed a number of gilt-edged chances to improve their goal difference and that may prove crucial come May.
But nothing can be taken away from yet another superb performance by Roberto Martinez's side, who are sure to be in the frame for an automatic promotion place at the end of the season.

Ankers
Frazer - Rui - Heath - Hughes
Prutton - Thommo - Howson - Carole
Kandol - Beckford

Får ikkje håpa du får rett me dann H-en din :o, kampen ska gå på Liberty Stadium, me andre far away from Elland Road og 30 000 leeds tilskodarar!

baste

Come on LEEDS

BERGH

Jon R

I doubt that very much. The same goes with Forest.

United boss Dennis Wise is demanding more from his players ahead of Saturday's top of the table clash with Swansea City.

The squad head for South Wales knowing victory would overhaul the Swans in League One and could be enough to secure top spot once again.

The manager was disappointed with the performance at Hartlepool on Boxing Day, and says he is looking for an improvement at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

"It's a good game for us to come to, and we'll probably play better against them than in the last couple of games," said Dennis.

"It's a massive top of table clash, and there'll be a capacity crowd. They are a big side in this league and as a player you should be looking forward to it.

"I'll get the lads going and hopefully we can get a result.

"Swansea will set up a certain way, possibly 4-3-3 or two wide men and one up front depending how you look at it. We have to be ready.

"We haven't got much time and we have to be prepared. You have to be ready for these things. Everyone is okay, everyone is fit.

"It's difficult at this time of year because you don't want to slog them, but you want to put a lot across to them."

A sell-out crowd of in excess of 20,000 awaits United at Swansea - and Leeds will be backed by a following of around 2,800 for the long trip.

There are no new injury worries ahead of the game.

Wise words are United’s Swans song

LEEDS United boss Dennis Wise knows his side must raise their game for their top-of-the-table clash with Swansea City.
United travel to Liberty Stadium for tomorrow's sell-out clash with the leaders with Wise words ringing in their ears after their Boxing Day share-all with Hartlepool.
"I don't think mentally a few of the lads had prepared, which was disappointing," said Wise, after Jermaine Beckford's 90th-minute leveller.
"We took the wrong decisions a lot, which was annoying. There were a few players who just weren't at it, and we did the small things wrong."
Wise is well aware that such sloppiness needs to be ironed out for tomorrow's Coca-Cola League Two trip to Swansea, who trounced Cheltenham 4-1 at home on Boxing Day.
Meanwhile, United are walking a disciplinary tightrope at Liberty Stadium.
Captain Alan Thompson is already out of the January 5 clash with Northampton after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Hartlepool.
And he could be joined on the sidelines by Rui Marques, Beckford or Matt Heath if they pick up a yellow card against Swansea. All three are currently on four yellows apiece.

Dennis Wise: I'll wrap Alan in cotton wool

Leeds United's captain is in line to take up the armband once more during tomorrow's crucial League One game at Swansea City, and his recall appears inevitable after the club struggled through their Boxing Day appointment with Hartlepool United.

Deprived of Jonathan Douglas and without a midfield which picks itself, Dennis Wise is fighting a growing urge to remove his protective shield from Alan Thompson.
Leeds United's captain is in line to take up the armband once more during tomorrow's crucial League One game at Swansea City, and his recall appears inevitable after the club struggled through their Boxing Day appointment with Hartlepool United.
Thompson had exerted his influence over Bristol Rovers and completed 90 minutes four days before United's match at Victoria Park, but his relegation to the bench for Wednesday's 1-1 draw in County Durham was a public expression of caution from Wise over the long-term fitness of his club captain.
Thompson's outing against Bristol Rovers last Saturday was his first league start since October, the legacy of hamstring and calf strains which ruined the work that brought him to peak condition during the summer.
His involvement has been so sporadic that Douglas was in more regular possession of the armband at Elland Road until the Republic of Ireland international sustained a knee injury which seems likely to end his season prematurely.
The absence of Douglas has in turned heightened the requirement for a fit and in-form Thompson within Wise's ranks.
The dilemma in front United's manager is difficult to resolve, and Wise is attempting to balance the quality of distribution and creativity offered by Thompson with the need to protect a player who turned 34 last weekend.
Even if the former Celtic midfielder is let loose at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow, it is likely that Wise will reel him back towards the substitutes' bench for the visit of Oldham Athletic to Elland Road on New Year's Day.
Few players are more capable of positively influencing the second half of United's season, but Wise believes Thompson is beyond the stage of permanent involvement.
Wise toyed with the possibility of fielding Thompson from the start against Hartlepool, a temptation which was given perspective by the sight of the midfielder appearing with 33 minutes remaining and helping to guide United away from a third league defeat of the campaign.
"I was tempted to play Alan at one stage," Wise said. "But his last game before he played the other day was such a long time ago. It's a difficult situation.
"Thommo's getting on a bit, and your body starts to tell you that you can't play as many games as you'd like to. You can't do what you did when you were 21 years old.
"You end up pulling hamstrings and calves, and I had it towards the end of my career. I pulled my calf six times in one year. You have to be managed.
"I want him to get into the team, and I want him to be fit and to dictate things, because he can. But what I don't want is to keep losing him â€" where he plays one game then misses five, plays one game then misses 10.
"Because I lost Jonathan Douglas, the temptation is probably bigger now.
It wasn't so massive when I had Jonathan, but it's a situation that you have to get right. That's my job.
"Alan is influential, he's a big person in the dressing room and he's important. He knows that. But he also knows the other part of it, which is that he's got to be careful."
Though Thompson's condition is muddying the waters of a midfield which has lacked continuity all season, it was nevertheless reassuring for Wise to see Thompson take a grip of a game at Victoria Park which was running away from his side.
Jermaine Beckford's 90th-minute goal secured a 1-1 draw after what ranked as one of Leeds' least competent performances of the term, and the point was enough to lift United to the top of League One for the first time â€" if only for a couple of hours.
Swansea reclaimed the initiative by routing Cheltenham Town, a show of strength by a side who have gathered points at an incredible rate since they delivered a timid display and slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Elland Road in September.
Wise expects Roberto Martinez's side to remain in and around the division's two automatic promotion places until the end of the season. And in his mind United's boss probably sees the battle for the title as a three-horse race involving Leeds, Swansea and Nottingham Forest.
United have made hard work of their schedule through December, but Wise's players have limited the damage caused by a noticeable dip in the standard of their performances.
Thompson's last-minute free-kick tied up a 1-1 draw at Walsall a fortnight ago, and an own goal was responsible for Bristol Rovers' 1-0 defeat at Elland Road last weekend. Beckford's late intervention against Hartlepool was further evidence that United are the most difficult club in League One to beat, however much fortune may aid them.
The tally of matches in which goals in the final 10 minutes have worked in United's favour is fast approaching double figures.
Wise said: "It helps psychologically, but you have to be fit to do it. Then the players have to believe, and then you need the personnel who can do it for you. We've got all three.
"We'll keep doing what we're doing and we'll keep trying to win games in the way that we do, even if it's not pretty. At the end of the day it's about results, and that's what we have to get.
"Hartlepool pressed us well, but if you take away the game and just put the chances on the table, you'll see that our chances were clear-cut. On chances alone, we should have won.
"Some of the experienced ones weren't playing, like Alan Thompson and Tore (Andre Flo). I brought (Radostin) Kishishev in but he had an off-day unfortunately. It happens.
"Alan came in and calmed things down, and it's good when you've got players who can come on and affect the game. Maybe they might need to have a little game (tomorrow). We'll see."

Martinez Issues Rallying Call

Roberto Martinez has asked fans to get behind the squad as Leeds United pay visit to the Liberty Stadium tomorrow afternoon and be Swansea's 12th player.
The game became a sell out officially yesterday as 12 book holders took up their allotted tickets.
Martinez wants the Liberty Stadium to be intimidating as he looks to gain every edge over Dennis Wise's side.
For the first time since Yeovil Town visit on the 18th November 2005 the stadium will be packed to the rafters, as Swansea look to gain every advantage possible on Saturday.
Even at this early stage in the race for the Championship both sides know a win will put them in pole position.
A bumper Boxing day crowd saw Swansea dispatch relegation candidates Cheltenham Town 4-1 , Martinez will be hoping for more of the same as he looks to extent the clubs lead at the top of the league one pile.
The club have implored fans to get to the game early and turnstiles will be open from 1pm to accommodate fans.

Martinez Told The Evening Post:
'We need to make sure we match what we faced up at Leeds, and I know our fans can do that because they are the best I have seen.
We will have a sell-out crowd behind us tomorrow, which is very pleasing, and we need to use that.
We need the fans to be ready, to be full of excitement and to be looking forward to the occasion because that will create an electric environment. The Vetch was a very intimidating place for opposition teams, so why should it not be the same at the Liberty?"
Football is a game of emotions and some decisions are a result of emotions. That's why we need to make sure every single fan kicks every single ball and asks for every single decision from the referee.'

Wise set to name unchanged side

Leeds manager Dennis Wise is not expected to make any changes to his side for the trip to Liberty Stadium against Swansea.
Wise has no new injury or suspension problems as his side look to topple the leaders at the Liberty Stadium.
Leading goalscorer Jermaine Beckford will partner Tresor Kandol again up front, with Tore Andre Flo on the substitutes' bench alongside midfielder Andrew Hughes, Seb Carole and Paul Huntington.
Wise must decide whether to start with skipper Alan Thompson, who will miss the game against Northampton on January 5 through suspension, or retain Radostin Kishishev in central midfield.
Midfielder Jonathan Douglas is out for three months with knee ligament damage, striker Mark De Vries is still sidelined with a groin injury and Portuguese winger Filipe Da Costa has a hamstring problem.

SWANSEA v LEEDS

Table-topping Swansea entertain everyone's favourites for promotion in what is sure to be a red-hot atmosphere at the Liberty Stadium. The visit of Leeds has ensured that a sell-out 20,000 will cram themselves into Swansea's plush stadium as Roberto Martinez's boys try to maintain their excellent form.
A 4-1 home win over Cheltenham on Boxing Day will leave them in good spirits as they try to avenge a defeat at Elland Road earlier in the campaign. They have buried their home hoodoo that was threatening to stifle their promotion charge and are the in-form side in League One at present.
Leeds roll up in third place but on the back of a tongue-lashing from Dennis Wise after a 1-1 Boxing Day draw at Hartlepool. Wise said: "I don't know if it was too many Christmas puds or what, but in the first half we weren't at the races at all and gave away a sloppy goal which annoyed me. In the second half we were a lot better and had some clear chances, but we had to wait for the goal.
"It's disappointing to see a performance like that, but it happens in football. Players have off days and you have to recognise that, but it doesn't make it any easier for me to accept."

CLARKY'S VERDICT: Swansea are sizzling at present and will hand Leeds a rare defeat and move further clear at the top of the table.
