Dougie: Get ready for Ell of a night

In the minutes before the start of competitive games, Dougie Freedman confesses to being a "miserable b*****d", devoid of any aggressive emotion.
Expectant atmospheres tend not to register with him â€" but the lump in his throat as he prepared for last season's play-off semi-final at Elland Road was like few he had felt before.
A crowd of more than 36,000 cracked Freedman's facade that night, so much so that he talks about it now as if the game were yesterday.
"I'd pay good money to experience that again as a player," he said. "Whatever the cost."
The striker prefers to prepare for each of his professional appearances methodically and quietly, keeping his own counsel and a clear head. It naturally amazed him that he seemed as emotional as any of his team-mates as he left the dressing room at Elland Road for the last time as a Leeds United player, the final home match of his loan with the club.
The deafening noise that broke out as the squads of Leeds and Carlisle prepared to set their semi-final in motion 12 months ago is the same clamour he expects to hear again when the second leg of this season's semi-final between United and Millwall begins on Thursday night, and harnessing a crowd of 37,000 â€" certain to be the highest seen in the Football League since the final day of the 2007-08 term â€" is the crucial trick that Freedman hopes Leeds can pull off.
United failed that examination last season, losing 2-1 to Carlisle during a first leg which went awry in spite of the crowd. Freedman will be employed as a television pundit at Elland Road on Thursday, yards from a pitch he would rather be on, but the 1-0 lead held by Millwall is an advantage which the Scot says will come under exceptional strain.
"The question of whether Leeds are good enough to turn Millwall over is the least of my concerns," Freedman said. "They're easily good enough in all departments and they're only a goal down. Ability isn't the issue.
"The biggest factor in my eyes will be their mindset in front of that crowd. The atmosphere will be like nothing either team have seen this season â€" you certainly won't be able to compare it with normal league games where Leeds have had 30,000 crowds. This is a one-off, do-or-die battle and Elland Road will be absolutely crackling.
"People will tell you that I'm quite a miserable b*****d just before kick-off. I'm a bit quiet and I like to keep a clear head, but the play-off game last season was such an emotional occasion for me. It gave me a massive lump in my throat and my wife was so surprised to see my face afterwards because I looked blown away. That's not like me.
"The difference between Elland Road and so many other stadiums is that, of the 40,000 fans in there, 30,000 of them are vocal and passionate for 90 minutes. It's a proper football crowd and I've hardly ever experienced anything like it in my career. I'd love to experience it again."
The wall of sound during the early stages of the semi-final first leg against Carlisle was so thick that Freedman resorted to using sign language with the players around him.
It was, he admits, an evening when your performance was required to do most of the talking.
United lost their grip of the tie as Carlisle negated the atmosphere and established a 2-0 lead, but it was Freedman's scuffed finish in the sixth minute of injury-time which exerted the greatest influence over the semi-final as a whole. Three days later, a 2-0 victory at Brunton Park qualified Leeds for the final at Wembley.
The situation on Thursday will not be so different, save for the fact that the 1-0 head-start established by Millwall on Saturday will now be tackled by Leeds on home soil. United's position is perilous yet optimistic, a club who are very much in the game yet mindful of the potential cost of a slow start.
"Millwall won't lie down and die because they haven't all season but my gut feeling is that Leeds will turn this around in 90 minutes," said Freedman. "I think they'll rise to the crowd and show their bottle when it matters. There's enough experience in the squad to make that happen.
"The crucial thing for them is not to think about the possible consequences of mistakes. There's no point in worrying about what will happen if Millwall score first or how the game might pan out if Leeds are too positive. All that does is encourage negativity. The best thing the Leeds players can do is set their minds on how they want to play and stick to that.
"The truth is that none of the lads on either team will know how they'll cope with the occasion until they get out there. Last year, you could have stood next to me with a Tannoy and I wouldn't have heard you. I certainly couldn't hear what the players around me were saying. It basically became a case of giving Jermaine Beckford the thumbs-up whenever I could and making what I thought were the right runs and the right plays.
"It was surreal but absolutely incredible at the same time. A few of the players would probably accept that they froze but surely they'll be better off for that experience."
Freedman watched the first leg at the New Den on Saturday and entered United's dressing room after full-time to exchange pleasantries and offer encouragement to the players he knew from his time with Leeds.
His loan at Elland Road lasted for just over two months, in which time Freedman made 14 appearances, scored six goals and finished on the losing side in the play-off final at Wembley, an event which marked a forgettable 34th birthday for the ex-Crystal Palace forward who is now on the books of Southend United.
"I was at Millwall on Saturday and I went into the dressing room to see a few of the lads afterwards. Things have changed since I was there and they've got a new manager (Simon Grayson) so I was a bit worried about taking liberties, but I wanted to see the old faces and see how they were.
"A few of them looked quite down about the result but it's good that they were.
I can’t say I felt brilliant after we lost to Carlisle but by the next morning, the whole group of us realised we were right in the tie and were thinking ‘let’s get into Carlisle and take them apart’. I’m 100 per cent hoping Leeds do that on Thursday.”

Torpe-do

berlin

GeirO

Småviktig dag i dag, ja.

That's a nice tackle, Zak
JERMAINE BECKFORD must be the only man in football history to compliment another bloke on his tackle at a Millwall-Leeds game.

Spotlight on Millwall

YEP chief football writer Phil Hay takes a look at the betting ahead of tonight's play-off semi-final second leg with Millwall and the big match referee.

The Odds
William Hill are more than happy to favour a Leeds United victory, with Simon Grayson's side 6-10 to win over 90 minutes tonight. Millwall are a 19-5 shot while the draw is longer than normal at 12-5.
Hills' outright market now has MK Dons as 19-10 favourites to secure promotion at Wembley, with Leeds at 9-4, Millwall 23-10 and Scunthorpe United outsiders at 5-1.

The Whistler
Mark Halsey. The Professional Game Match Officials Board have pulled out a big hitter for Millwall's visit to Yorkshire, choosing Select Group referee Halsey for this evening's fixture.
He has already been asked to handle two of the bigger matches at Elland Road this season â€" United's meetings with Huddersfield Town and Leicester City â€" and the Lancashire official was also the man in charge when Millwall were beaten 4-2 by Leeds in October 2007.
The last four matches he has been responsible for at Elland Road have all had attendances in the region of 30,000 and he should not be fazed by tonight's crowd.
Halsey's record of 61 yellow cards and three dismissals after 41 games is a long way short of severe.

ArneS
