Poyet denies sidelining Kelly
LEEDS UNITED assistant manager Gustavo Poyet has denied that he and Dennis Wise are deliberately sidelining Gary Kelly, right, from the squad at Elland Road.
The long-serving full-back is reaching the end of his 16th and final season with United but has not been seen in the club's first-team since their 3-2 defeat at Barnsley on November 4.
Kelly's absence was initially blamed on a back injury and the defender has been affected by an ankle problem recently, but his four-month spell on the sidelines and the reasons behind it have been the topic of intense discussion among United's supporters.
Poyet rubbished one suggestion that the former Republic of Ireland international had been banned from Elland Road on match-days, and insisted the defender would be considered for selection once he returned from his ankle injury.
Poyet said: "He's not been fit, and it's up to him to be fit and available.
"If, after that, he's fit and not playing and you ask us why he's not playing, we should have an answer. At the moment it's nothing."
Kelly made his 500th outing for Leeds last season and has played 529 times since signing in 1991.
