Vale axe Pilkington as skipper

Port Vale manager Lee Sinnott has replaced George Pilkington as captain with Luke Rodgers for tomorrow night's game at Leeds United.
The manager has also axed senior pros Paul Edwards, Danny Whitaker, Craig Rocastle and Calum Willock from his squad in a dramatic response to Sunday's embarrassing 1-1 draw at home to Chasetown in the FA Cup.
In an unprecedented move, the Vale manager circulated his 16-man squad to the media this afternoon.
He said the decision to replace Pilkington as captain was not a reflection on the defender's ability as a player or a skipper. However, he said he felt he needed to 'shake up' the squad after a run of just one win in his five games in charge.
The manager also emphasised that he hadn't made a decision on who will be captain in the long term.
He explained: "The thinking is I have to shake this club to its bones.
"People will look on the decision to make Luke captain as being a negative towards George Pilkington.
"I can assure them that is not the case, but I have to use everything at my disposal to shake things up by putting everybody on their toes.
"That is why Luke Rodgers will be captain tomorrow. I will assess it game by game.
"The decision is not centred at George Pilkington, it is directed at the whole squad. It is as if to say I am changing the captain and taking it game-by-game because of what we have all done so far, not what George has done."
Edwards, Willock, Whitaker and Rocastle will not even be on the bench at Elland Road. Sinnott says he could have left more players out following the Chasetown game and said the axed four could return to the squad for the game at Gillingham on Saturday.

Vale's squad against Leeds: Goodlad, Anyon, Miller, Talbot, Pilkington, McGregor, Lowe, Salmon, Laird, Harsley, McGoldrick, Rodgers (captain), Westwood, Glover, Lawrie, Prosser.

SHOW ME SOME PRIDE

Lee Sinnott is demanding his players restore some pride in their shirts when they take on mighty Leeds United at Elland Road this evening.
The call comes after Sinnott responded ruthlessly to Sunday's draw at home to Chasetown, a result which extended Vale's run to one win in five games under the new manager.
Leeds are hot favourites to make that one in six this evening, but Sinnott can't be accused of standing idly by.
He hopes the decision to replace captain George Pilkington with Luke Rodgers, and axe Calum Willock, Danny Whitaker, Craig Rocastle and Paul Edwards, will show no one is safe.
The reshaped side face potentially the toughest assignment of the season this evening, but should be in no doubt what they need to do to keep their places.
Sinnott said: "I'm looking for no fear and a work-rate that inspires Port Vale supporters and makes the journey up to Leeds worthwhile.
"I'm looking for commitment, and I will take that over ability any day."
Sinnott has preferred not to comment on individual players, apart from stressing he has removed Pilkington's arm-band to 'shake up' the squad, rather than as a reflection on the defender's leadership abilities.
He also says he could have left out more players than Willock, Whitaker, Edwards and Rocastle, so the axed four shouldn't be held responsible for the Chasetown debacle.
He added: "People will think this is just about Chasetown, but it is from four weeks of work and observing. That's not just in games, but in training as well.
"Even people at the top of the league can improve, and you can't tell me that everything is going brilliantly if you are bottom of the league.
"People will either do it my way or they won't. There are only two courses of action, either I go or they go.
"I have been here for four weeks and I don't class myself as untouchable. Why should anybody else be?
"Regarding the changes on the team sheet, why should anybody else have the audacity to think they are a pencilled-in appointment?
"No one has that right. The best players in the world understand they don't have that right, so they are always proving every week that they should be in the team."
Sinnott's radical action was revealed to the media yesterday lunchtime as he handed out a list of the 16 players who will be in tonight's squad.
He said: "I could have left it until an hour before kick-off, but then people would have started getting things on the grapevine.
"Instead, I'm sending out a message to people. That is not just in the dressing room, but people off the pitch, people who work here and the supporters, who are the most important.
"I will do things my way. I'm not here to massage egos, I'm here to get results.
"I will try anything and everything to do that."
Vale's task couldn't be much tougher against a side whose league record at Elland Road reads seven wins and a draw.
However, they have been more vulnerable in the cups, having lost at home to Bury in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and Hereford in the FA Cup.
Vale won't have to face former striker Leon Constantine as he is out with a foot injury.
However the striker, who scored 26 goals for Vale last season, has been a bit-part player for United this season.
An ankle injury in pre-season put him out for three months and he has yet to start a league game.
He will have his work cut out getting into the side because front pair Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol have scored 18 goals between them this season.
Beckford, the 10-goal top scorer, is likely to be the main threat to a Vale team who must also cope with playing in front of a crowd close to 30,000.
Sinnott needs no introduction to Elland Road, having begun his coaching career with their academy and then managed Farsley, just six miles away.
He said: "I have seen their fans at first hand and they are unbelievable supporters. It is up to us to silence them."
Sinnott and his side won't expect a warm welcome from the home faithful, although Leeds assistant boss Dave Bassett has offered some sympathy.
However, it is unlikely Sinnott is ready to consider Bassett's view that relegation might not be a bad thing for the Valiants.
Bassett said: "When I took over Sheffield United, the best thing that happened was us getting relegated.
"I could then rebuild the team and we came up from the Third Division and then into the First Division in two seasons. Sometimes it's not the end of the world.
"It may well be like that for Leeds.
"If Leeds can get back and progress, it may be a situation where everyone can say 'perhaps it was the best thing for Leeds to get relegated'."

Leeds v Port Vale preview
Players back for Leeds, changes for Vale

Thompson: Back for Leeds

Leeds United welcome back two senior players, while Port Vale have rung the changes for the trip to Elland Road.
Promotion hopefuls Leeds suffered a surprise defeat at Cheltenham in their last League One game, but have Alan Thompson and Radostin Kishishev available.
Skipper Thompson has made only seven appearances this season due to injury, but returns after a calf problem, while Kishishev is back in full training following a hamstring strain.
But a foot injury prevents striker Leon Constantine, who swapped Vale Park for Elland Road in the summer, from playing against his former club.
Goalkeepers Casper Ankergren (leg) and David Lucas (neck) also returned to full training on Monday and striker Tore Andre Flo successfully came through a reserve-team run-out.
Striker Mark De Vries, on loan from Leicester, joins Constantine on the sidelines due to illness.

Vale boss Lee Sinnott has dropped several players from his squad following the weekend FA Cup draw with Chasetown.
Paul Edwards, Craig Rocastle and Danny Whitaker started in the 1-1 draw with Chasetown, but have been left out by Sinnott.
Striker James Lawrie has been called into the squad and the 16-year-old could be in line for a surprise start while defender Luke Prosser, 19, and on-loan duo Keith Lowe and David McGoldrick also come into the squad.
Sinnott has also changed his captain, with top scorer Luke Rodgers having been given the armband previously worn by George Pilkington.

Enig.

Sleivind

Come on Leeds!!

Kickthemdown

0-0?
